Imagine growing strawberries in winter, or harvesting your own wasabi. What if you could customize the fruits and vegetables you ate– making them sweeter or more citric, for example. This is all possible, thanks to a modern and innovative project by Los Angeles company, Local Roots.

This creative idea uses 40-foot shipping containers as indoor growing centers called TerraFarms. According to creators, one container can achieve production equivalent to five acres of farmland. Brandon Martin, Local Roots VP of Business Development, said in an interview with Voyage LA:

    “We chose this form factor for several reasons;
The infrastructure exists to logistically deploy 40’ shipping containers on a global scale
They provide a form factor that can be mass produced at scale
Access to upcycle an existing abundant supply
    Tightly controlled environment.”

Local Roots vegetables-producing design uses hydroponic plants, which require less care than regular crops grown in soil. The water used in the containers is recirculated, using almost 99% less water than regular crop fields. Additionally, they installed a custom engineered LED power system, giving the plants the exact amount of energy needed to properly grow.

The company has also created software to keep track of the plants and attend to their specific requirements. The sensors are capable of monitoring water, nutrient and atmospheric conditions. CEO Eric Ellestad referred to the utility of the software as “almost a growing algorithm”. He said, “You can use that software platform to drive that farm as efficiently as possible.”

The containers could be brought anywhere, especially places experiencing food-shortages, or where access to fresh food is severely limited. The Local Roots initiative has been able to bring the farm to the city, all the while promoting the purchase of local products.

According to Martin, “Food production will need to increase 70% by 2050 to keep up with our global population growth. This challenge will require international collaboration utilizing many types of technology and ongoing innovation. Local Roots is one piece of that puzzle.”

Five acres of what farmland ? That looks like it would equal one 800' row. You could probably get dozens of those rows in a 7 1/2 acre field here with no irrigation or lighting .

That looks like a very cruel way of growing plants, being grown so close together, without fresh air, never even seeing the sun?

I will only eat humanely grown plants and vegetables.
It's all about taking action and not being lazy. So you do the work, whether it's fitness or whatever. It's about getting up, motivating yourself and just doing it.

Have you ever grown with hydroponics? The plants grow VERY fast, so even if they could only get about 3 acres worth of coverage with all of the shelving they could still get 5 acres of yield just by growing with hydroponics.

I can't imagine how hot it would get inside a sealed metal box in Florida

I have grown with hydroponics. It has its advantages and disadvantages. Indoors requires expensive lighting, ventilation and pollination. It is not as trouble free as one might think. An electric outage or mechanical malfunction and your entire crop could be wiped out in short order. I would call BS on a 40' shipping container growing the equivalent of 5 acres. I had an NFT system set up one year outside for tomatoes and vegetables. The plants did very good and produced fruit weeks maybe even a month before plants in the soil in our area. But a huge tomato plant is a huge tomato plant. Cannot squeeze 5 acres worth of tomato's into a 40 foot container. When I grew with that NFT system outdoors, water evaporation and plant uptake of water was a huge factor. The water evaporates but not the salts. Yield is definitely good. Fertilizers are expensive. Need the right cash crop to justify the costs of hydroponics.
One year I did Straw bale gardening.

In the future I think I will consider Hugelkultur. No need to water or fertilize. Many years of production.

    Is eating plants Biblical?

That's bulll$#@!. It could be more productive per area since the climate can be controlled but certainly not by that much.

Do you think a 40ft container could grow as much hydroponic weed as 5 acres of soil?

Hah, $#@! no.. You can grow 15 foot plants in the soil... but strawberries and lettuce? Maybe.

The location and soil don't matter so one can grow just about anywhere, is huge. Fly over states can matter now.

If true the reasons the railroad car produces more
Less loss from insects and weather so maybe overall after taking into account crop loss
For every one outdoor growing season you get 2 or more with the container.
A container plant produces larger yields vs a soil plant

I tried to visualize the area
    5 acres =217800 sq ft
    /320 sq ft container = 680 containers
So an area equivalent to 680 container sized plots of land vs 1 container

Doesn't seem like it can outgrow a 5 acre plot.
