A new, liberal tea party is forming. Can it last without turning against Democrats?

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/power...b0d_story.html

Grass-roots movements can be the life and death of political leaders.

It’s a well-worn story now about how John A. Boehner, then House minority leader, joined a rising star in his caucus, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, in April 2009 for one of the first major tea party protests in the California Republican’s home town of Bakersfield.

A little more than six years later, after they surfed that wave into power, the movement consumed both of them. Boehner was driven out of the House speaker’s office and McCarthy’s expected succession fell apart, leaving him stuck at the rank of majority leader.

Democrats are well aware of that history as they try to tap the energy of the roiling liberal activists who have staged rallies and marches in the first three weeks of Donald Trump’s presidency.

What if they can fuse these protesters, many of whom have never been politically active, into the liberal firmament? What if a new tea party is arising, with the energy and enthusiasm to bring out new voters and make a real difference at the polls, starting with the 2018 midterm elections?

The women’s marches that brought millions onto streets across the country the day after Trump’s inauguration — spurred organically through social media — opened Democratic leaders’ eyes to the possibilities.

With a 10-day recess beginning next weekend, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has instructed her members to hold a “day of action” in their districts, including town halls focused on saving the Affordable Care Act. The following weekend, Democratic senators and House members will hold protests across the country, hoping to link arms with local activists who have already marched against Trump.

Yeah but that was in response to the second Iraq war, the third Iraq war hasn't even started yet. I just think that these detention centers that are being built for immigrants will hold liberals just as easy. The time for outrage against Trump was before he got elected, now people should be looking out for themselves and their own, the time for political discourse is over, we lost that battle, the next one won't be bloodless, America first is the new world order.

Ummm. If these people keep doing what they are they will lose more seats in 2018 and 2020. They are not a force capable of rallying extra people to the cause. They'll only purge those that aren't to the left of Stalin.

They are purging all white people, especially males, and welcoming all forms of immigrants in whatever numbers, even as we watch Europe deal with rapes and bombings constantly and our economy continues to nosedive with the amount of people we already have.

The only thing I can think of that could turn the Democrats around is another crash (which we know will be worse than 2008) and it be blamed on Trump+Republicans and even then they'd have to move to the right to attract people.

If you believe in a business cycle like Ron Paul does then you know that Trump can't stop the FED TRAIN.

They already have a proven strategy for co-opting - there is zero threat. Just look at what they did to ol bern.

They'll pay off a figurehead, like the liberal glenn beck, and then plant a bunch of provocateurs. They'll find some librarian looking porn actress to "rise up" and then discredit the whole movement. Easy cheese, baby. Easy cheese.

Sometimes I think that the only people that truly understand the enormous difficulty in creating a political movement with political clout is the Ron Paul Revolution participants. I don't think the marching SJWs are even in the ballpark of knowing how to do it or what's involved. I can't yet quite imagine these marching SJWs learning Robert's Rules, becoming stealth delegates, and taking over state conventions. Maybe they will surprise me.

They can turn people out and raise money, but that only goes so far. If they can split off from the fringe elements who come in and get violent, I think they can be allies on certain liberty-related issues. Rand and Corey Booker sponsoring legislation against police misconduct is a good example, but the extremes on the left and right came in and $#@!ed that up.

If history repeats itself the new left party will look a lot like the old right party, and yes it will fail.

Actually, the democrat activists will do better than libertarians, because they will support anyone on their side. Libertarians support almost nobody unless he is 100% on their side on every. single. issue.

    yep
and then they attack each other

    No risk of this succeeding.

The reason the Tea Party worked was because a significant number of House Reps were not nearly as conservative as the people in their district and in some cases legacy Democrats represented those places.

That disconnect doesn't really exist on the left to same degree. There aren't a whole lot of vulnerable Republicans in 2018. And most liberal locations like in California or Massachusetts are already represented by hard left people in office.

They aren't getting anywhere with the education sham. "We aren't about winning elections. We are educating people." That's a load of hooey. They ae failiong on principles because they have none. Gary Johnskn was the final nail in the coffin, I hope. If so, then perhaps some really principled people can revive the base under a new brand. Libertarians as a brand are done.

And if they plan to educate a new generation of voters, their spokesperson needs to be concise and to the point. This is my biggest criticism of Rand during the debates. He took so looooong to get to the point.

Winning local elections is not really very helpful because the problem is Washington and the unconstitutional way they expand government. We need a bigger movement that has money (so not focused solely on students) and can mobilize full time in every state. Working the fringes will never generate a big enough base to win House and Senate elections.

It starts at the local levels. That is how stuff like this happens:
