Asking for prayers for my mother....

My mother, Jimmie Kate, 86 yrs. old, suffered a stroke this past Christmas Eve/Christmas Day. She took a bath and when she got out she was feeling numbness on her left side. She simply went and lie down. Two hours later when my dad came into go to bedroom she mentioned it to him. He gave her an 856 aspirin and called 9-11. She was admitted. With a 240 BP. She had a mini-stroke.

Nothing ever moves quickly in a hospital except the nurses. So many tests between then and now. The hospital is great for the most part. The facility and nursing staff are the best. I learned this last year when my dad broke his hip. And thanks for the prayers for that!

But, they only have one neurologist and that one is on vacation. So her admittance doctor consulted with the vascular surgeons. My mom has a 50-60 carotid plaque impairment. The clot they think caused the stroke is located in her brain stem. They don't want to operate on either, given her advanced age. A week before, her GP, who is one of the two vascular consultants at the hospital, sent her for tests because of her high blood pressure, figuring renal stenosis. She was supposed to consult with her 3 days after her stroke regarding this. So it was a good thing the scans had been already been done. She has blockage of the veins to her kidney. There is a clot in the brain stem, but they don't know if that was the cause of the stroke or high blood pressure.

Yesterday my mothers Primary Doctor was advised by the two vascular surgeons to administer Halperin to dissolve and loosen the clot in her stem. Today he said that he was kept awake all night. He just didn't feel this was the correct course at this time. Halperin can free a clot but it also can cause a brain bleed. So he called a fellow at Wake Forest Baptist that referred him to their Neuro-Stroke specialist. He told him under no means administer Halperin. Ship her over for testing and evaluation by him. He said the floor was full but he would make room for her today. Sure enough around 5pm room was made and she was transported.

So far, I really feel blessed considering the circumstance.

But, there is still a long way to go.

If you will do this you have my heartfell thanks. I may not witness the prayer, but just knowing there is someone out there, taking a moment of their day to send blessings, makes a difference. Thank you.

I only need prayer. A RPF member could use a prayer and some help fund wise. Please say a prayer for my mom, but please give to our fellow jllundqu. http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthr...63#post6568263

Don't know if this info will be of any help or not, but when I had my stroke in 2011, I had similarly high BP of 240/200. I didn't have any significant blockages, the stroke was caused by a bleed in my brain. Seems to me not giving her halperin was a VERY good decision, based on my own limited experience.

Thank you my friend. I knew yourself and Donnay would be among the first. Your prayers and well wishes, and advise, helped me through my dad's hip break and recovery last year.
I'm actually thankful, in a way, for it. It taught me my siblings angles. Isn't that the $#@!? A parent goes through an emergency and they feel it is a way to exert childhood bull$#@!. I don't know if you have many brothers or sisters, but, they can be $#@!ed up. An older brother and two older sisters take any crisis to "prove" they are the most caring. If it weren't for mom and dad I'd bitch slap all of them. I have to keep reminding them that it isn't about them it is about mom and dad.
My dad told me driving to the hospital yesterday that I have always been the "peace maker" in the family. I told him I've never made peace otherwise the $#@! that is going down wouldn't be going down. I just facilitate, schedule and rope-a-dope so that there is no drama in front of mom. I could care less whether they like each other. He just laughed a bit and said. "peace maker."

I consider it a blessing. I really do. His name is Dr. Gray, and he has been phenomenal. He came in and said my mother was so sweet and the family just so inquisitive that it kept him up all night considering using Halperin. One of my sisters had mentioned to him about if her stroke was caused by high blood pressure brain bleed and this weighed on him. The fact that he realized his hospitals limitations and arranged a transfer into one of top neuro hospitals has given me confidence in him. You don't find a doctor like this much anymore. He went against his own hospitals vascular specialists and had her transferred for specialist care. He, basically, echoed my thoughts of a second opinion. We are blessed in what we have been given.

You and your mother have our prayers. Strength, healing, comfort, and peace; and for the doctor guided by the wisdom insight and clarity of the Holy Spirit. The power of God to reverse her ailment and ease her fears and pain.

Prayers for your mom Phil. Mine is 89 and had a heart attack this last year along with various other health problems. She's a tough old bird still insisting on living by her self in her own home, though it is a bit of a chore making that possible.

Phill, I just said a prayer for your Mom and your family and will continue to pray until she is well again.

It is a blessing to find a doctor like this. It is comforting to know that he stepped out of the box on this one. Your mother deserves nothing but the best care.

Just letting you know I'm thinking of and praying for your mom. I hope all goes well and she gets the best care possible. It's not easy to have to rely on others (doctors) when it comes to the well-being of your loved ones. Sounds like she is in good hands, though. Praying for strength and peace of mind for you as well. Take care, Phil.

An update for those that have said prayers and given words of encouragement.

She has been up and down. Food has changed from mush to solid back to mush and now back to solid again. She had trush but it is now under control. This is good.
The time at Wake Forest Baptist was good. Good doctors, good staff.
At transfer we requested she go back to Catawba Valley for Physical Rehabilitation. Frye is 'ranked' but we feel the level of care and attachment at Catawba makes the difference. The nursing/care at this hospital is astounding. I don't know if they truly loved my mother and family enough to give us affirmations and care...but if it was a ruse it was well hidden. Some of her original nurses came down to visit on her return.
My mom was transferred back to Catawba.
Within one hour they put her in a wheel chair and got her moving it with her good arm (right side).
Given everything I am so thankful.
And thankful for your prayers and thoughts.
It's far from over, but I love everyone of you for taking the time to give prayers and thoughts.

    Phill,

That's good news. I will still pray for her speedy recovery.

    @donnay thank you.

In the scheme of things one has to wonder whether Providence does not create situations.

As you will remember I asked for prayers for my father last year when he fell and broke his hip.

He went to the same hospital. Got the same great care. Now one year later my mom is in the same situation.

Because of his fall and rehabilitation she takes it as a challenge that she can do the same.

    God works in mysterious ways.

Brings out the best and the worst of us.

I'm so over siblings that are suddenly reliving childhood vendettas with my 2 older sisters and older brother.

I'm known as the "peace maker" in the family. I do it to honour my mother and my father.

But if had a choice I might choose a my moniker to be a single action .45.

Just joking but I'm sure, if you have family, you know what I mean.

    Ephesians 6:2-3 (KJV)

    2 Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Slow but steady. Minor improvements everyday. She still has paralysis on the left side, however they are working with her. She has gained some strength in her left leg. Able to push down with it with good pressure. Left shoulder is able to move though the arm and hand still cannot. They extended her therapy to 4 weeks from 3. They make her get out of bed and go to a "dining room" one time a day and eat from a wheel chair. There she has met a new friend. She has also started therapy in the gym. Thrush has cleared up and she is on solid food again. Doctor has taken her off Plavix (blood thinner) and decided to use fluoxetine (Prozac), which has seen some promise in helping stroke victims with returning motor skills. I will be watching its effects very carefully. Incontinence is better and she is able to call a nurse and sometimes is able, with assistance, to make it to the toilet. Her overall attitude is still amazingly positive. Dad has been staying with her overnight and these two lovebirds are like teenagers. Thanks for asking, brother.

Thanks, brother. Her rehabilitation is measured in small increments, each one a God send. Her rehabilitation will continue through Feb. 4th. then we will have to make some serious decisions regarding my parents living arrangement. Which are many and varied.

I missed it too! Sounds like she's a tough old bird! Prayers for a full recovery.
