Just another day at the office.

When the sea gets those foamy streaky lines in it, along the direction of the wind, that's when you know you're in a world of hurt and to hang on.

If I lose an engine, the FAA has approved me flying up to 4 hours on one engine to the nearest airport...

Now if I have an uncontrollable fire...ditch?

People take air travel for granted (safe). but I know, someday...

The odds get going against you, that's for sure.

Believe me, I've had more than a few white knuckle days and nights, wondering if it's all going to hold together.

Almost all those scenes were shots of SOP in bad weather, disregard your intended course, hold the bow up into the sea and hang on.

But that is dependent on one critical fact, you need main propulsion to do it.

Many large cargo ships are single screw only.

You lose the ability to hold your head into the wind and seas, and, assuming it's bad enough, you're done.

That's what sunk the El Faro. Probably what sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald back in the day. And ten thousand other vessels in between then and now.

single screw or single engine seems insane. The Air Force allowed me to fly over the frigid waters with over 50 knots of surface winds from the US to Europe, Europe to the US, in a single engine fighter (to save money).

My best bet was trying to parachute and land on an Ice Berg. Otherwise...

Thats some crazy footage in that video - must seem like it could go forever. Worst I've ever had is ice a 60 mph winds while pulling a 30' travel trailer. That was for nearly a day (8 hours) - I had trouble sleeping cause my side was so cramped up (white knuckled it the whole way).

Now I had a choice to pull over at a walmart, but I didnt see a single walmart in that video... Be careful out there.

    Not that I'm aware of.

She was built using standard ship building practices of the time, 1957, and by that time most of the bugs had been worked out of welding procedures that had caused failures that had plagued earlier Liberty ships.

She was fast, big and set numerous cargo and transit records, indicating to me anyways, she was a well built, sturdy, seaworthy vessel.

When you're a stomach sleeper, and wake up to find that you're weightless with your back pressed against the underside of the overhead bunk...you're in heavy seas. And this was aboard a carrier. That and the claxon blaring and a call for the aweigh team for forward flooding can $#@! up a wet dream.

    @angelatc

Only one main engine, shaft, propeller and rudder. (although there are configurations where two steam turbines or diesel main engines are coupled with a gearbox to turn one main shaft, but these are getting increasingly rare.)

Any one of those fail/break and you are dead in the water.

If you are dead in the water in conditions in that video, the vessel is almost guaranteed to capsize, break up or fill up and sink.

Here's the OCCL Hong Kong, for example, one of the world's biggest container ships currently.

I could not find a photo of the vessel in drydock, but, she has one shaft, one rudder, one main engine, one propeller.

One big prop drives it . Something goes wrong then nothing drives it and it will be beaten into the sea if a storm is big and bad enough .

    Yup.

For most container, tank and cargo vessels this is still the default design.

Specialty vessels, tugs, supply vessels, DP vessels, cruise ships...they all use multiple screws and thrusters, due to the nature of the work and the maneuverability needed.

I've heard a theory that she may have encountered a rogue wave that drove her bow into the bottom of the lake and broke her in half.

Being an ocean going vessel in a shallower lake, she may have just been too big for where she was. The lake would have to be a lot deeper than the ship was long, to keep that from happening.

The Fitzgerald encountered the Nov storms on Lake Superior , hurricane force winds , waves at least 35 feet . Sank suddenly with no distress call only an hour from the safety of Whitefish Bay . It lies in 530 feet of water in two large pc.'s .

Probably a regulation was not followed.

Yep, and she was 729 feet long, thus she was 199 feet longer than the water was deep. If she had run into the "Three Sisters" with a height of 70 feet, when the bow dropped after the waves, she would be heading toward the bottom at speed and could have driven her bow into the bottom of the lake.

That seems like a lot of risk to take with an expensive pc of equipment and all the dollars invested in your training . Did they send the whole fighter wing or just you ?

I did both two ship and four ship flights over the pond. Send us over warm water uses a lot more fuel. Only thing that would be saved in warmer water is the pilot...
