Does anyone know of any good, thorough books on the history of Israel since the creation of the modern Israeli state?

One recent book is Scars of War, Wounds of Peace, by former Israeli foreign minister, and it's a quite balanced overview (aka "anti-Semitic" as far as American Zionist lobby people are concerned, but they can attack neither the content nor the messenger in this case). It also includes the history of the creation itself, unlike what you asked.

"The Holocaust Industry" by Norman Finkelstein. Highly controversial. You can search google video to see lectures and debates by/with the author.

"The Jews of Khazaria", Kevin Alan Brook (not contemporary, but rather the emerging historical evidence that many/most European Jews came from the Khazarian Empire (600AD-1100AD), which was situated, more or less, between today's Turkey and Russia.

There was a controversial man named Benjamin Freedman, who was a New York Jewish insider until he "defected" and began to disclose what he felt were the facts of the true history and motives of world domination by the International Zionists.

I listened to a speech last week and I'm pretty sure it's him talking and I don't know when it was given, but it sounded very rational. It is on YouTube in four parts under the title "92% of Europeans Jews, were originally Khazars".

Ive been reading "Middle East Illusions" by Noam Chomsky (Im not a big fan of his, but ill admit he knows quite a bit about the Israeli/Palestinian issue.)

Great read, in depth discussion of Israel/Palestine/Terrorism/Foreign Policy i highly recommend it even if you dislike Chomsky.

Randy, I took a look in Amazon for the book "Far and Wide" by Douglas Reed, and in the description page of the book they included a quote from the book as to how Douglas Reed say future historians would describe this era we are in (and he wrote this in 1951).

"At the mid-twentieth century the forces conspiring, to enslave all the countries of the Christian West, especially the English-speaking ones, were so greatly in control of public information that the masses knew next to nothing of what went on and what impended. Public men had come to fear these inhibitors too much to tempt their wrath, and any who did risk that ire were defamed by so powerful a machine of the spoken and written word that even the masses, after lending an eager ear of hope, then dully turned their backs on the speakers and shunned them, thinking they must be evil after all. In that way they were brought again and again to pit themselves against each other, always in the name of "freedom, " for their own mutual destruction and enslavement..."

Could anyone have been more prophetic? I read the online book "Facts are Facts" yesterday that I posted earlier in this thread and it was an eye-opener, too.

Several of the American Foundations have become little more than "fronts" for Socialist and, in some cases, Communist activities, providing further confirmation of the nexus between Big Finance and Socialism.

Alger Hiss, the American State Department official who was later exposed as a top Soviet agent, was at one time after the war President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. When Alger Hiss was exposed as a Soviet agent, he was befriended by Mrs. Helen Lehman Buttenweiser. The same woman later supplied most of the bail for Dr. Robert Soblen, brother of Morton Soblen, one of the most important Soviet spies ever captured in the U.S.A.

Dr. Soblen was also charged with espionage activities, but he jumped his bail.
Mrs. Buttenweiser is the wife of Benjamin Buttenweiser, another member of Kuhn, Loeb and Co. She is also the niece of the banker Herbert Lehman, a former Senator and Governor notorious for his support of revolutionary movements."

During the Revolution Jews played a prominent part in the party organs. The politburo elected on Oct. 23, 1917 had four Jews among its seven members. The Military Revolutionary Committee, appointed to prepare the coup, was headed by Trotsky and had two Jews among its five members. In the early years of the Soviet regime, Jews were in many leading positions in the government and party machinery (page 797, 98)

Thus, 57 percent of the Politburo at the height of the Revolution was Jewish, as well as 40 percent of the Military Revolutionary Committee.
