Ivanka Trump is reportedly pushing Trump toward gun control. Donald Trump Jr. is fighting back

    https://theweek.com/speedreads/86702...-fighting-back

In one corner, we have Ivanka Trump and Attorney General William Barr. And in the other, we have Donald Trump Jr.

These are the two sides warring for Trump's favor in an ongoing debate over gun restrictions, Politico reports. Ivanka Trump's faction is reportedly looking for increased restrictions on gun sales and stronger background checks, while Donald Trump Jr.'s is warning him against it — but neither side seems to have curried the president's favor just yet.

As more and more mass shootings make headlines, and as gun violence continues to be an epidemic across the U.S., two sides have formed in the White House. Ivanka Trump and Attorney General William Barr both insist Trump can institute "expanded background checks for gun sales" and "win back moderate suburban voters in the process," people involved in the discussions tell Politico. Donald Trump Jr., along with a top aide to acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, meanwhile say Trump will lose his conservative base if he "pushes too aggressively on new gun control legislation," Politico reports. It has all amounted in absolute gridlock within the White House, with Trump reportedly staying mum on what side he prefers.

White House spokesperson Hogan Gidley called the story "ridiculous," and said "we are completely united in developing ... meaningful solutions that will protect the Second Amendment, make American communities safer and potentially prevent these types of tragedies from ever occurring again."

Jr is no match for Ivanka's influence and political stature.
Granted Jr secured a small win on LGBTQ global civil rights , Ivanka comparatively has secured many more massive influence wins ( Syria bombing, extreme conservative GOP Roy Moore defeat in AL, Steve Bannon firing, Israel embassy move, Rocky A$AP release ).Her influence is also mutiplies thanks to support from MAGA's very talented 'Russian' son-in-law who has played brilliant role in courting influential Israel lobby donors.
What is Jr's standing next to this power couple?

As you and I have both pointed out: mass shootings are rare, and crimes committed with firearms have been on a steady decline.

Exclamation White House infighting thwarts movement on guns

Competing factions inside the White House have stymied efforts to unite behind gun legislation, further delaying President Donald Trump from getting behind any plan.

On one side is Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and adviser, and Attorney General William Barr. Both are urging the president to back new firearms restrictions — including expanded background checks for gun sales — insisting he can be the leader who succeeds on an intractable issue that has bedeviled his predecessors and that he can win back moderate suburban voters in the process, according to people involved in the discussions.

On the other side, a group that includes Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son and an avid hunter, and a top aide to acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, is telling Trump he risks losing support from his conservative base if he pushes too aggressively on new gun control legislation, they say.

Then there’s Trump, who has heard all of these arguments privately but publicly hasn’t committed to any plan. For weeks, he’s left Washington guessing on whether he’d support any gun control legislation and what form the legislation would take.

Notice that neither side is telling him to do something because it's the right thing to do. None of them think in those terms.

    Wrong, as always.

The right to bear arms is sacred, and endowed by God to every citizen from birth.

Most Americans recognize that it’s not dependent on some old-fashioned notion about arming citizen militias. It’s a fundamental right that enables the people to maintain a check against the near-limitless power of government, which is granted by the people in the first place.

Trump says he's moving 'very slowly' on gun control to get it right

President Donald Trump shut down speculation that the administration is moving forward on a legislative package related to guns, telling Fox News that his administration is purposefully "moving very slowly" on talks because they "want to make sure it's right."

The President was asked by Fox News in an interview that aired Thursday whether he might move on the measures recommended by the Justice Department, which would expand background checks to all advertised commercial sales.

"No, we are not moving on anything," Trump said. "We are going very slowly in one way because we want to make sure it's right. We're doing (a) very careful job."

The President said his administration was working with Democrats and Republicans to craft the package, but cautioned against the ideas of some Democrats, including presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke, who are suggesting mandatory firearms buybacks.

"A lot of Republicans and some Democrats now are afraid to do anything, to go down that slippery slope," he said. "A lot of people think this is just a way of taking away guns, and that's not good -- because we're not going to allow that."

Trump also asserted that though he doesn't want "bad people" or "crazy people" to have access to firearms, and that his administration is "going to protect the Second Amendment."

Trump on Wednesday called the recommendations by the Justice Department "just a series of concepts and ideas."

"About a week ago we asked (Attorney General William Barr) to get involved and those are ideas that we're talking to Republicans, Democrats, everybody about. Some they like, some they don't like. Just a series of concepts and ideas," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

The President's slow roll comes as discussions around legislative fixes to mass shootings have heated up following a series of mass shootings in the US. Barr returned to Capitol Hill for the second day in a row on Wednesday, meeting with lawmakers about proposed gun bills, including a measure that would expand background checks for buyers.

The pitch -- outlined in a document that was obtained by CNN -- would include "a background check requirement would be extended to all advertised commercial sales, including sales at gun shows," and would follow in the mold of background check legislation introduced by Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia in 2013.

White House aides have spent the last month meeting with congressional staffers and devising a legislative measures. The Justice Department also prepared a package of options that was delivered to the White House more than two weeks ago.

But the White House has yet to publicly release any gun measures that it would support.

It's not clear whether the Justice Department recommendation would pass muster with lawmakers. GOP leaders have indicated they are awaiting word from Trump before taking action.

Despite the President's suggestions of compromise during his Fox interview, the National Rifle Association says the Justice Department's pitch is "a non-starter."

Jason Ouimet, executive director of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, said in a statement: "This missive is a non-starter with the NRA and our 5 million members because it burdens law-abiding gun owners while ignoring what actually matters: fixing the broken mental health system and the prosecution of violent criminals."

The wording of the thread title is off.

Trump has always supported gun control, and he won the election in 2016 by promising the nation that he would continue to support it. Ivanka isn't pushing him toward anything. She's just encouraging to stick to his position.

    Back in February: https://www.thedailybeast.com/wh-tru...kground-checks

President Trump supports efforts to improve the federal system for background checks in the purchase of firearms, the White House said Monday. “While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the President is supportive of efforts to improve the Federal background check system,” the White House said in a statement. Trump is said to have spoken to Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) on Friday about legislation the lawmaker introduced to improve the background check process. Trump’s vow of support for the effort comes amid mounting calls for gun control in the wake of a school shooting in Florida last week that killed 17 people.
    This week: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-w...alks-continue/

The White House is not expected to put forth its gun policy proposal for at least another week, and a universal background checks bill passed by the House earlier this year is firmly off the table, according to a source familiar with ongoing discussions on gun legislation proposals.

Over the weekend, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer urged President Trump to support H.R. 8, a bill that would require background checks on all gun sales with limited exceptions. But the source said the president does not see universal background checks as a feasible solution for reducing gun violence, and a veto threat from when the bill passed in February still stands.

Among other initiatives the president will not support: a gun registry, gun confiscation, a mandatory buyback policy, a ban on high capacity magazines, taxes or regulatory impediments to the purchase of ammunition and a ban on any class of weapon, particularly an assault weapons ban. The source called all of the above "way out of bounds" for the president.

There is, however, still hope for a modest expansion of the background check system. The president remains open to a background checks expansion proposal along the lines of the so-called Manchin-Toomey bill, the source said. The president has been in regular contact with Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Republican Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Democrat Chris Murphy of Connecticut for several weeks on a bill that would require background checks on commercial gun sales, including at gun shows and online.

To be fair, those were two separate actions.

The first was to expand mental health checks.

The latter is to force every transfer through NICS, private sales, friends, loaner weapons, family...all would be subject to NICS now.

But keep in mind that Trump tends to try to tell people what he thinks they want to hear.

Trump showed interest in New Zealand gun buyback program, Ardern says

Jacinda Ardern, the New Zealand prime minister, has said Donald Trump expressed “interest” in her country’s gun buyback program, as the US president faces calls for dramatic changes to the nation’s firearms laws.

After the two leaders met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ardern told reporters that she “sensed an interest” from the US president in the sweeping gun reforms her government passed after the Christchurch mosque shootings in March.

“It was a conversation around our buyback and obviously the work that we have done to remove military-style semi-automatics weapons and assault rifles,” Ardern said.

“We had a conversation around what had happened in New Zealand, how it worked, and I referenced the fact that actually Australia had gone through a similar process and we really learned from them. It was really just sharing our experience, which obviously is pretty unique.”

New Zealand earned international praise for its swift response to the Christchurch massacre, in which a lone gunman killed 51 people and injured dozens more at two mosques in the city.

Days after the shooting, Ardern announced that most semi-automatic weapons would be banned. Weeks later, the country’s parliament overwhelmingly passed a law outlawing certain semi-automatics and compelling owners of such weapons to hand them over as part of the nation’s gun buyback program. So far, owners have returned as many as 15,000 banned firearms.

By contrast, a summer of carnage in the US – punctuated by mass shootings in El Paso, Texas; Midland and Odessa, Texas; and Dayton, Ohio – has prompted calls for sweeping gun reforms but so far no action by its politicians.

Gun buyback programs have always been controversial in the US, even among Democrats who near uniformly support strengthening the nation’s gun laws. But the Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke has shifted the debate with his vow to take away the millions of AR-15 and AK-47 rifles in possession.

Trump has at times expressed support for expanding background checks for firearm purchases – only to walk it back under pressure from Republicans and the National Rifle Association.

Gun control was only a part of what Ardern described as a “wide-ranging” conversation with the US president, which also touched on trade, tourism and national security.

A readout from the White House press secretary, Hogan Gidley, made no mention of their discussion about the gun buyback program.
