'Black Rifles Matter' sign causes controversy in Boothbay Harbor

BOOTHBAY HARBOR (WGME) -- A sign in Boothbay Harbor is raising some eyebrows. Seemingly a play on the Black Lives Matter slogan, it reads "Black
Rifles Matter: Yes, we have 'em. No, you can't take 'em."

Some local businesses are worried the sign sends the wrong message and could make some tourists feel unwelcome.

The man behind the sign, Linc Sample, insists it has nothing to do with race and black rifles or black guns are just another word for semi-automatic weapons.

He says his sign is just a rallying cry for the second amendment.

“There have been some people that have asked me to take the sign down and I don't respond to that very well. It's my property, it's my sign. There's been some talk that I have hurt tourism. I don't believe that for a minute,” Sample said.

Sample says he has posted sometimes controversial signs on his property for years.

As one who promotes firearm diversity, I find the flag to be deplorable. What's next? Lever action history month? Sheesh...

There should be some kinda statue of boundaries around the types of entities/lives that can be matter'd. Things are getting bit out of hand lately.
