Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

Never been on Superior, but I was on Michigan in a 30' full keel sailboat when we were going up north and got some weather. 6-8' waves an occasional 10', 25 knot winds, pouring sideways, just running the main, cut down to about the size of a handkerchief and still doing ~7 knots, almost the hull speed of the boat. I never felt unsafe and it wasn't that terrible, but it was certainly the edge of my comfort zone. A few times there were so "oh $#@!" moments, and looking back, we could have taken a lot worse beating and still been fine, but man...when we pulled into port I was exhausted from being up all night, but took about 30 minutes for my nerves to settle and catch a few hours sleep. I can't imagine taking on the seas in the OP video. Not too tough to say that scared the $#@! outta me!

    Yes, very much so.

It takes combining wind, water depth, surface currents, fetch (distance from land) and sub sea contours, but yes, putting all those together, you can, with a practiced eye, have a very good idea of what sort of wave heights, duration and set you will experience in a given location.

Not taking into account leaving protected harbors, 10 miles can make the difference between relative calm and dangerous sea states.

So to maintain that glide path, he needed to maintain +/- 240 knots indicated?

That's what surprised me in my limited sail plane experience, they came in hot.

    Very little room for error.

    Nice flight chops...I am envious.

I searched for a video of my squadron mate doing a dead stick landing at a closed Canadian base (Soellingen air base) in Germany, no luck.

It was kinda funny with the moment of the Brit pilot spoke in the back seat after they successfully landed. Wish In could find it.

Most guys in the oilfield work 28/28.

Keep in mind this is a new man, just starting out as a deckhand and wanting to see the world.

I did 192 days in a row one year, in the same situation. There were some old timers that camped out on that ship that had not gone home for years.

    Exactly.

The one fellow I'm thinking of, he had been onboard 2 and half years when I got onboard.

About 60 years old, never married, no kids, no close family, no home, no mortgage.

About 5 million saved and invested over a lifetime of doing this.

Had a car that he kept at a shipmate's house somewhere out on the DelMarVa penisula, on the rare occasions that he would get off for a few weeks, he'd visit a whore or two and drive to wherever and crash at friend's, shipmate's or distant relative's place.

A F-14 must be like flying dump truck then...IIRC the wing loading on those is almost double.

    Even with the variable sweeps.

Meh, regardless, I'd love an hour in either one.

That is not how the F-16 works. It is actually quite maneuverable with a full array of armaments and configurations.

The air-to-air capabilities lets the F-16 fight its way to the target while keeping its armaments, which is unique, really a first, against an air defense fighter. In a dire situation that require a prolonged engagement, the stores are jettisoned. And the true superiority of maneuverability abilities for a dog fight is shown.

Yeah, that's what I said. And its wing loading is fairly light if you figure in the bottom of the fuselage, which is a lifting surface delta-style.

Loading becomes artificially lower still when the strakes increase pressure underneath it.

There's a long tradition of the military having both twin-engine fighters that do everything and single-engine 'austerity' fighters designed. The theory is always that the single-spool model is 'for NATO-aligned countries,' but lately the lighter fighter often turns out to be the better fighter.

Also see F-104, F-5 (actually twin engine), F-35.

One 4-year-old’s very Minnesota Halloween costume: The Edmund Fitzgerald

Peggy Ryan is all about the homemade Halloween costume. There was the monarch butterfly costume she made last year, complete with headpiece. The big bad wolf costume that was “pretty daunting.” She’s done a dinosaur, a raccoon, a fox, and even a baby Batman.

She’s been making Halloween costumes for her family for decades. These kind of projects take prep time, so she knows to start early. In August, she put out the call. She asked what her grandsons wanted to be this year.

The answer was a new one: “James wants to be the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

    James is 4 years old.

“And I said: ‘No, seriously, what’s the Halloween costume?’”

Her son Mike, who is James’ dad, doubled down. “He said: ‘No, he really wants to be the Edmund Fitzgerald. Do you think you could make it?’”
