Colorado Voters Approve Psychedelics Legalization Ballot Initiative

Colorado voters approved an initiative on the ballot to legalize possession of certain psychedelics and create psilocybin “healing centers” on Tuesday.

More than four years after Denver became the first U.S. city to decriminalize so-called magic mushrooms, setting off a national reform movement, the state has now legalized low-level possession of a variety of psychedelics while following Oregon’s lead in authorizing licensed facilities to administer supervised psilocybin services.

Here’s what the Natural Medicine Health Act initiative will accomplish:

Possession, use, cultivation and sharing of psilocybin, ibogaine, mescaline (not derived from peyote), DMT and psilocyn will be legalized for adults 21 and older, without an explicit possession limit. There will be no recreational sales component.

The Department of Regulatory Agencies will be responsible for developing rules for a therapeutic psychedelics program where adults 21 and older can visit a licensed healing center to receive treatment under the guidance of a trained facilitator.

There will be a two-tiered regulatory model, where only psilocybin and psilocyn will be permitted for therapeutic use at licensed healing centers until June 2026. After that point, regulators can decide whether to also permit regulated therapeutic use of DMT, ibogaine and mescaline.

A new 15-member Natural Medicine Advisory Board will be responsible for making recommendations on adding substances to the program, and the Department of Regulatory Agencies could then authorize those recommended additions.

The advisory board’s membership will specifically include people who have experience with psychedelic medicine in a scientific and religious context.

People who have completed their sentence for a conviction related to an offense made legal under the act will be able to petition the courts for record sealing. If there’s no objection from the district attorney, the court will need to automatically clear that record.

“This is a truly historic moment. Colorado voters saw the benefit of regulated access to natural medicines, including psilocybin, so people with PTSD, terminal illness, depression, anxiety and other mental health issues can heal,” measure’s co-proponents Kevin Matthews and Veronica Lightening Horse Perez said in a press release. “We look forward to working with the regulatory and medical experts and other stakeholders to implement this new law.”

Well it's up 51.3% to 48.7% with 86% in, but not everyone has called it yet.

Once again, Americans screw the pooch with "legalization", which leaves the camel's nose in the tent.

I am now concluding that the average American is an evil idiot, and I don't give a tinker's damn how "nice" he may be. Nice counts for nothing in the absence of the basics.

I also note that 5-MEO is not on the list.

We're gonna need a lot of psychedelics going forward to make us forget about the clown world in which we reside in.

    Won't make you Forget..

You just see it with new eyes.

Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

    What?

This isn't legalization where they limit it to shops that get taxed. This allows for individuals to cultivate and possess with no limits. Additionally, people who need it administered for medical purposes can do that in a regulated facility. They should allow individuals to sell it some how, because it sounds like all you can do is give it away. But that's what a lot of hippies do anyway, pretty sure if you trade them a nice crystal for it or something they'll be ok.

DMT is on the list. You can vape or smoke DMT, or you can mix it with an MAOI inhibitor and ingest it orally to have an ayuasca experience. Pretty sure 5-MEO-DMT and DMT both break down into psylocin, not sure if there is a huge difference physiologically between mushrooms and DMT, with the exception of how much you get into your bloodstream and how fast it is processed. If you smoke or vape DMT, it's basically like doing a half oz or more of mushrooms, but it only lasts 10 minutes or so instead of 10 hours.

Which implies the retention of authority to disallow it at some point in the future. Mr. Camel, meet Mr. Tent.

    What could possibly go wrong?

This all raises the question of that nose remaining in the tent. For example, cop finds you in possession of a package with a mysterious substance in it. What does he do? Hallucinogens are now legal, but heroin and meth are not. Does he mind his own, or does he go full dick? We already know the answer. So when the sample is consumed in testing and it proves OK, are you compensated? When the sample is confiscated for testing, are you cuffed and relegated to the hoosegow until you are proven "innocent"?

Just wait until the first few puercos are killed by heroin/meth possessors. How do you think the rest will then proceed? Shoot first, ask questions later, all the while reciting the "I felt threatened" mantra, the universal get out of jail free card of police?

Given the nature of the general circumstance, it seems to me that the drug question is an all or nothing proposition where either legalization or decriminalization is concerned. Any half measure such as this seems to raise as many new problems as it proposes to solve. I would trust no instrument of "government" to the door to not find a way to turn this sort of thing into yet another drama-fest where innocent lives are ruined by those bastards.
