Black Lives Matter concerned about policing at Caribbean Carnival

As preparations ramp up for Saturday's Caribbean Carnival parade, questions are arising about the role of police at the event — especially from a Black Lives Matter Toronto activist who says the large police presence doesn't make people "feel any safer" at the festival.

So wiki says the festival draws about 2 million people.

In a city with 2 million people, is it common to have a stabbing with two victims over a long weekend, if that is the only violence the police really have to deal with? I mean, let's put this in perspective.

I've been to a lot of events where police presence is heavy handed, is unnecessary and does not make the people in attendance feel more safe. A lot of times that is because the people in attendance may be planning to break laws that are victimless crimes, such as drinking and being in public or using illicit substances like cannabis or hallucinogens. It's actually amazing if you go to some of these really big festivals like Burning Man or other similarly oriented music festivals and such how many people are tripping or doing drugs and drinking how little problems actually occur. Drinking seems to be by far the worst, and it is generally legal. Remember it is the cops who enforce this.

I'm not a big supporter of the BLM movement. It's not really a racial issue, even if they get a bigger portion of the harassment per capita. I'm a supporter of the "$#@! the police" movement. But the police also have the monopoly on protection of the public with our current laws, and law and order has its benefits if the laws are good. Safety was the theme of Trump's RNC speech, and safety is a good thing too. But for some reason, especially when one is planning on participating in peaceful, yet illegal activities, or even sometimes not, they don't feel safe with too many police.

This is because police tend to instigate incidents that wouldn't otherwise occur and can create bad situations that involve a lot of people. Look at the Isla Vista riots during deltopia a few years ago.

But ya, BLM shouldn't be banned.. they should be challenged intellectually by the media, but the media doesn't highlight white victims of police violence so clearly they have no interest in challenging them intellectually on the topic, but it should be done. They do have some fair points, but they also use a lot of really bad examples where black people who are violent criminals or just bad people in general end up the arguably somewhat justifiable victims of police violence. That is because they are media driven, but to be fair that is in part because the media is currently giving them a chance to have their voice be heard. Many of these people have negative personal experiences or know many people who have. The problem is the media narratives foster what people think their beliefs are and these media narratives are toxic. But BLM is getting behind these narratives and that is a big mistake for their credibility. If they are were all visiting RPFs and reading @Anti Federalist 's threads on the topic some years ago and highlighting those examples and not have it be so much about race they would be pretty on-point.
