U.S.: Pakistani Officials Help Muslims Force Christian Women into Marriage

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) published a report Tuesday accusing South East Asian nations of systematically failing to protect their populations’ religious rights, noting that “state officials” in Pakistan often shield criminals forcing Christian or Hindu women into a Muslim marriage.

The report, titled “Limitations on Minorities’ Religious Freedom in South Asia,” tracks religious freedom variations in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, finding them all lacking in enforcing religious freedom protections, even when these exist under federal law. Pakistan, an officially Islamist country, and India, which has experienced a surge in Hindu extremism, are home to the most egregious violations mentioned in the study.
The U.S. State Department designated Pakistan a “Country of Particular Concern” on Tuesday for its religious freedom violations under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998, which also created the USCIRF. The designation is expected to trigger sanctions on the nation, which appears on the list for the first time after being added to the “Special Watch List” last year.
The USCIRF’s findings appear to support the State Department’s decision. The report notes that private actors commit many violations of religious freedom, but often do so with impunity. Forced marriages are high on the list of those violations.
“The Pakistani media has featured many stories with a similar series of events: a Muslim man will kidnap, sexually assault, forcibly convert, and then forcibly marry a young Christian or Hindu woman, often with the collusion of state officials, such as the police and religious leaders, and neighborhood imams,” the report reads.
On the issue of forced marriage, intended to eradicate the Christian population through conversion, the report notes that some Pakistani politicians attempted to pass laws to protect Christian and Hindu women, which make up most of the religious minority population of the country. A proposed law in 2016 would have “criminalized the forcible conversion of religious minorities,” but the governor of Sindh province, where the law originated, “refused to assent to the law and therefore it stands unimplemented or enforced.”
Governors in Pakistan who have supported measures to prevent the violation of religious rights have suffered extreme consequences. In a notable 2011 case, Salman Taseer, the governor of Punjab, publicly expressed disapproval of the use of the nation’s blasphemy law to sentence Asia Bibi, a Christian mother, to death. His bodyguard assassinated him and remains a hero among the Islamist political majority in the country.

And of course they say it never happens, or that underage Muslim girls are ever sent to the Middle East to marry some old dodger so he can get into the US.

Pakistan on Wednesday condemned a U.S. decision to add it to a list of nations that infringe on religious freedom, calling the move "unilateral and politically motivated."Secretary of State Mike Pompeo added Pakistan to the U.S. list of "countries of particular concern" regarding protection for people to worship according to their beliefs. It was previously on a special watch list. The downgrade would expose Pakistan to potential American sanctions, but Pompeo waived those penalties, citing U.S. national interests.
The Foreign Ministry condemned the move, saying Pakistan is a "multi-religious and pluralistic society where people of diverse faiths and denominations live together."
In recent years Islamic extremists have repeatedly attacked religious minorities in Pakistan, including Shiite Muslims and Christians. Members of the Ahmadi sect face heavy discrimination and are subject to restrictions stemming from a 1984 law that forbids them from "posing as Muslims."
The U.S. said the decision to downgrade Pakistan was largely the result of a law that prescribes death for blasphemy against Islam. The mere rumor of insulting Islam can spark lynchings in Pakistan.

On top of forced marriages, they also seem to still allow a man to marry multiple wives at a time which seems to be human rights abuse. Some of persecuted minorities are able to seek asylum in western countries but lately migration fatigue has been making it harder for US/Europe to allow persecuted religious minorities from other countries.

It's encouraging to see this topic brought up here , lately MAGA crowd has been downplaying plight of brown Christians from 3rd world countries, Palestine, Haiti etc and not so willing to offer them asylum. Yesterday NBC news played video of a preganant Christian woman with a young baby in extremely bad condition in dirty camp set outside US border in MX as she was told she'll have to wait months if she ever gets interviewed for her asylum case. There were some minorities from Bangladesh among other Christian migrants waiting outside border.

Get lost and take your open borders propaganda with you, you also seem to be supporting foreign intervention, the only good thing about this is that it may get us to break up with Pakistan and be forced to leave Afghanistan.

Why such overly emotional outbursts in a discussion ... was just a comment in response to refreshing compassion diplayed for plight of brown foreign Christian women (who are not even US residents like Khashugi) by a supporter of MAGA. You posted this in Politics section, what else to do you expect if one is not to give opinion on possible political options to help persecuted , suffering brown Christians in 3rd world countries, Palestine, South America etc.

This was not really meant to highlight hypocrisy or would have pointed out that MAGA's political slave masters/ foreign neocon lobbies funding many US politocians had been also accused of supporting and creating groups like ISIS that have brought tremendous sufffering for Christian women of many races.

You don't really care about anything but attacking Trump and promoting liberal agenda items.

It's a good thing that all people of conscience, libertarians, insist that it's wrong to interfere in the affairs of foreigners in all circumstances.

Otherwise, there might have to be a debate as to whether anything could or ought to be done (including, booga booga, intervention).

But, since that isn't the case, this news shall just flow over us like the wind; we refuse in principle to do anything.

    So, in short, who cares?

    Why is this news?

It's news because if our relationship with Pakistan decays far enough we may be forced to leave Afghanistan and that would be a good thing, it is also news because it demonstrates that we don't want too many immigrants from Pakistan.
