Thread: National Coin Shortage

    National Coin Shortage

I don't know if this has been discussed. Everywhere I go there are signs at the resiger that due to National Coin Shortage only Exact Change can be used or Credit or Debit. WTF? Cash is flowing only one way. If there is a shortage why don't they mint or print more?

There's plenty out there. I've not been turned down when asking for change. Most places use it as an excuse to get you to "round up" to whatever their "cause-du-jour" is.

It's at the bank, too. We can't buy change to give people so we round up and down depending on the total.

I've seen this at grocery stores as well, but it appears to only be at the self check out lanes.

I get the feeling it is the new normal and they want to push us into cashless society.

Started about April . By then the mint had been shutdown for awhile and branches were running out . Basically the entire flow - cycle was interrupted . Some businesses were still open and getting change from the branches while many of the businesses that routinely took change in were not open. There is actually plenty of change but it is all in citizens homes and not available at the branches for businesses . The mint was down a long time .

That might be the narrative but I think that hoarding change has always been an American Tradition. People always come home and throw their change in a bowl or container.

Ha! I've been taking my change jar to work. I should be charging for it.

I went into a Dollar General Today and they had a sign up at the register, "No Cash Back". So they don't even want to give people paper cash.

Around here , no cash back means you cannot pay the bill with debit or check and add ten or 20 bucks to it to get cash .
