North and South Korea reportedly set to announce official end to war

    https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/17/nort...nd-to-war.html

North and South Korea are in talks to announce a permanent end to the officially declared military conflict between the two countries, daily newspaper Munhwa Ilbo reported Tuesday, citing an unnamed South Korean official.

Ahead of a summit next week between North Korean premier Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, lawmakers from the neighboring states were thought to be negotiating the details of a joint statement that could outline an end to the confrontation.

Kim and Moon could also discuss returning the heavily fortified demilitarized zone separating them to its original state, the newspaper said.

Pyongyang and Seoul have technically been at war since the 1950-1953 Korean conflict ended with a truce — and not a peace treaty. Geopolitical tensions have occasionally flared up since the armistice, although to date both countries have managed to avoid another devastating conflict.

A successful summit between the Koreas later this month could help pave the way for a meeting between Kim and President Donald Trump. The U.S. president and North Korean leader are poised to hold talks in late May or June, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

South Korea says Kim Jong-Un is no longer demanding U.S. troops leave South Korea ahead of talks. But President Trump says walking away from the talks is still on the table.

As we detailed earlier, just a few short days after President Trump proclaimed "mission accomplished" in Syria, North Korea's leader has followed suit, reportedly say the nuclear test site in the north of the country has completed its mission and will be abandoned.

Furthermore, Yonhap reports Kim says no further nuclear tests are needed, and will stop launching test-flights of ICBMs on April 21st.
As a reminder, the nuclear test facility in the northern part of the country was potentially a major problem as we noted previously the fact that it was collapsing.

And one tunnel reportedly killed 200 when it did collapse.

Additionally, KCNA reports that North Korea says it will actively engage dialogue with the international community to achieve peace and refocus on economic growth.
Seems like that trip to Beijing recently made some serious difference!!

While there are few details, it is hard to misinterpret the Korean headlines.
We are sure President Trump will be quick to congratulate Kim (and himself).

Hard to see how this is not a big win for Trump!

This is going to be a tough pill for Bezos and The Washington Post to swallow... Here's tonight's headline...

North Korean Leader Kim's full statement (via KCNA):
The decision "to include the great victory of the economic construction and nuclear armed forces construction transfer line" includes the following decisions.

    • First, in the course of struggle to carry out the party's translation, we carried out the nuclear test and the underground nuclear test, the miniaturization and the lightening of the nuclear weapon, and the project for the development of the ultra-large nuclear weapon and the transportation means sequentially and faithfully realized the nuclear weaponization. I declare it solemnly.
    • Second, from April 21st, Juche 107 (2018), the nuclear test and the intercontinental ballistic rocket test will be discontinued. North Korea's nuclear test center will be discarded in order to ensure the transparency of the suspension of the nuclear test.
    • Third, the suspension of nuclear testing is an important process for global nuclear disarmament, and the DPRK will join international efforts and efforts to halt the nuclear test altogether.
    • Fourth, we will never use nuclear weapons unless there is nuclear threat or nuclear provocation to our country, and in any case we will not transfer nuclear weapons and nuclear technology.
    • Fifth, we will concentrate all the efforts to build up a strong socialist economy and mobilize the human and material resources of the country to dramatically raise people's lives.
    • Sixth, we will establish a favorable international environment for the construction of a socialist economy, and will intensify close dialogue and dialogue with neighboring countries and the international community in order to protect the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and the world.

South Korea has halted its anti-North Korea propaganda broadcasts at the border ahead of its summit Friday with Pyongyang.
South Korea halts DMZ propaganda broadcasts at border with North Korea https://t.co/LxbGWXHmAB via @ReutersTV pic.twitter.com/pChLnHGwr0
    — Reuters Top News (@Reuters) April 23, 2018
The broadcasts, which include South Korean pop music and news critical of the North Korean government, ended at midnight on Monday as both countries prepare for the first summit in a decade.
The decision was confirmed by South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense, which did not state whether the broadcasts would continue after South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader meet in the border village of Panmunjom.
“We hope this decision will lead both Koreas to stop mutual criticism and propaganda against each other and also contribute in creating peace and a new beginning,” the defense ministry said.

In a meeting that's widely viewed as a preamble to a historic summit involving President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the leaders of the two Korea's - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in - are preparing to meet at the border at 9:30 am local time on Friday.
Friday’s summit will take place in the Peace House in in the border town of Panmunjom, located in the heart of the demilitarized zone.

Im Jong-seok, the chief of staff for President Moon, provided a full itinerary of the meeting - which will involve the ceremonial planting of a pine tree on the border - to Bloomberg:

    • Kim to walk across border to South
    • Kim to review South Korean military’s honor guard after walking together with Moon
    • Moon, Kim to start summit at 10:30am local time Friday
    • Moon, Kim to have lunch separately after morning meeting
    • Moon, Kim to plant pine tree on border after lunch
    • Moon, Kim to walk together around border before afternoon session
    • Two Koreas to sign, announce agreements after summit
    • Moon to host banquet for Kim from 6:30pm at peace house
    • No Plan to extend summit to Saturday for now
    • S. Korea: undecided whether Kim’s wife will accompany; hopes Kim’s wife to join dinner
    • Kim Jong Un’s sister part of North Korean delegation
    • S. Korea says issues related to denuclearization can’t be fully resolved at the inter-Korean summit; S. Korea would consider the summit a success if the North’s intention of denuclearization is included in the agreement

Meanwhile, South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha credited President Trump with bringing the two Korean leaders together for Friday's summit during an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour that's slated to air Thursday night.
"Clearly, credit goes to President Trump," Kang told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in Seoul. "He's been determined to come to grips with this from day one."
During the summit, Kim will become the first North Korean leader to cross the DMZ.

I'm just sitting here thinking about how Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize for doing nothing. Trump has China on board, and North Korea and South Korea are at the same table. I never thought I would see the day.

Trump has his way, but he is doing exactly what Ron Paul wanted to do--get people to sit down at the table and talk. I'm not dancing in the street or anything. It just seems like a lot to accomplish in a year and a half.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean PresidentMoon Jae-in agreed Friday to finally end a seven-decade war this year, and signed a declaration to pursue the “complete denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula, although they did not announce any concrete steps to dismantle the North’s nuclear programs..
The two leaders embraced after signing the deal during a historic meeting on their shared border, the first time a North Korean leader has set foot on the southern side. They announced plans to formally declare a resolution to the war and replace 1953 armistice that ended open hostilities into a peace treaty by year’s end.

“We solemnly declare to our 80m Koreans and the world that there will no more war on the Korean peninsula and a new era of peace has begun,” North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean president Moon Jae-in said in a joint statement. “It is our urgent historic assignment to put an end to this current abnormal state of ceasefire and establish a peace regime.”
“We have agreed to share a firm determination to open a new era in which all Korean people enjoy prosperity and happiness on a peaceful land without wars,” Kim said, in his first remarks in front of the global press since taking power in 2011.
The two sides “confirmed the common goal of realizing, through complete denuclearization, a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.”

The two agreed to work towards advancing the reunification of the divided nations and further improving inter-Korean relations. In order to reduce tension, the two sides agreed to hold military talks in May and set up a joint liaison office in Kaesong, the border town in the North.
“South and North Korea agreed to actively seek the support and cooperation of the international community for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” according to the statement. It didn’t elaborate on what that would entail.
The commitment to ‘complete denuclearization’ is ambiguous, and subject to different interpretations,” said Youngshik Bong, a researcher at Yonsei University’s Institute for North Korean Studies in Seoul. “It can be interpreted as North Korea getting rid of all warheads, or North Korean demands on the U.S. military in South Korea.”
They have also agreed to end any hostile activities that can lead to military clashes, including cross-border propaganda broadcasts and leaflet distribution. They will also enable Red Cross talks to discuss reunions of families separated by the Korean war.

Sure! One can believe the delusion of Washington as diplomatic peace maker. Its all the credit of Washington - the regime that is biggest saboteur of diplomatic, trade, dialogue, and peace efforts for the past two decades; and especially during the recent efforts; the regime that has refused any dialogue or talks; the regime that issues unilateral commands and orders and proclamations that must be fully complied with before even considering any discussion; the regime that has repeatedly humiliated S. Korea on all prior efforts; the regime that refused any diplomatic efforts until until it was finally dragged to kicking and screaming forced to accept it when S. Korea finally went behind Washington's back and did it anyway (with back channel advice from big neighbors China and Russia).

    S. Korea understands this thing called diplomacy. Smart enough to stroke the big ego of the big bully on the block that keeps on sabotaging all its diplomatic efforts.

Wow, ya, you are REALLY out of the loop..

It's funny how you refer to Trump as "Washington".

What happened when Trump talked to the President of SK a few months ago and got the negotiations started from that end (he had already been working on NK through China) the SK President came out and said he was talking with NK, it was going great and he gave Trump the credit for that. Link

The next day, "Washington" (aka Nikki Hailey et al) claimed in the media that the SK/NK talks were "unsanctioned" by Washington... Even though they were personally sanctioned by Donald Trump himself!!

So in that sense you are right, Washington is NOT a peacemaker, but clearly "Washington" does not consider Trump part of "Washington" (their words, not mine)..

That is the irony here, of you calling Trump, "Washington"

Of course if you weren't so caught up in your hysterics and had been paying attention, you would have known that and might had a different choice of words..
