Tea party ties don't bind voters in Lehigh Valley
Candidates linked to the movement were faring poorly in several races
May 19, 2010|By Scott Kraus | OF THE MORNING CALL
Despite the victory of tea party favorite Rand Paul over Republican establishment candidate Trey Greyson in the GOP primary for Kentucky's open Senate seat, congressional candidates with ties to the populist small-government movement appeared to be striking out in the Lehigh Valley region.
Assessing the success of tea party-linked candidates here is difficult. The movement isn't a political party, so there are no official candidates. Complicating matters, a regional Philadelphia-based tea party group endorsed a slate of candidates throughout the state that included many Republican incumbents, including Charlie Dent in the Lehigh Valley's 15th District.
Even within local tea party groups, members differ over whom to support.
