This was suggested by Edward Taube in his article "The Sense of "Horse" in the Horse Latitudes" (Journal of Geography, October 1967).[3] He argued the maritime use of 'horsed' described a ship that was being carried along by an ocean current or tide in the manner of a rider on horseback. The term had been in use since the end of the seventeenth century. Furthermore, The India Directory [4] in its entry for Fernando de Noronha, an island off the coast of Brazil, mentions it had been visited frequently by ships "occasioned by the currents having horsed them to the westward".
Possible...but in all my years I've never heard that term used that way.

    I'm sticking with:

...the term horse latitudes originates from when the Spanish transported horses by ship to their colonies in the West Indies and Americas. Ships often became becalmed in mid-ocean in this latitude, thus severely prolonging the voyage; the resulting water shortages made it impossible for the crew to keep the horses alive, and they would throw the dead or dying animals overboard.[2]

Offshore supply ship STRIL MYSTER went out of control and collided with berthed offshore supply ships EDDA FERD and SKANDI AUKRA, while maneuvering at Aberdeen Harbor, in the evening Dec 10. All three ships sustained some damages, EDDA FERD and SKANDI AUKRA damages probably superficial, as both ships left Aberdeen and continued working. STRIL MYSTER on Dec 16 was still at Aberdeen. According to The Press and Journal pressandjournal.co.uk, Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is aware of the incident and making inquiries.

A week before Christmas, Ironbound, a 12-foot, 4-inch great white shark, pinged at 7:25 a.m. Dec. 18 off the coast of Melbourne. Two days before that the 998-pound shark pinged at 9:05 a.m. off the coast of Canaveral National Seashore. Will the great white shark stay in Brevard waters through Christmas? Time will tell.
According to its Ocearch tracker, this is the first time Ironbound has pinged here. The shark advocacy and research group notes Ironbound as its 53rd great white shark "spot-tagged" in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.
Ironbound, tagged Oct. 3 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, got its moniker from West Ironbound Island, near Lunenburg. He pinged for the first time five days later.

Last month, a 12-foot, 2-inch great white shark named Sydney pinged at 11:25 a.m. Nov. 13 off Canaveral National Seashore. The 1,124-pound shark was tagged Sept. 15 at Scaterie Island, Nova Scotia, with its first ping recorded Sept. 22. He was the first great white shark tagged by Ocearch during its Nova Scotia expedition in fall 2019, according to the shark advocacy group.

Captain, 7 crew abducted from Greek oil tanker in Cameroon port

    https://www.france24.com/en/20191231...-cameroon-port

    Issued on: 31/12/2019 - 14:24
    Modified: 31/12/2019 - 14:22

Armed men staged a night raid on a Greek oil tanker anchored in a Cameroonian port and abducted eight crewmen, including the vessel's Greek captain, the merchant marine ministry and the ship's owner said Tuesday.

The five Greeks, two Filipinos and a Ukrainian were part of a 28-member crew aboard the Happy Lady in the port of Limbe, near the economic capital Douala, the ministry said in a statement.

"An armed group boarded the tanker and ordered eight crew members including the 45-year-old captain to disembark," a representative of owner Eastern Mediterranean Athens (EMA) told AFP, requesting anonymity.

One crewman, a Greek national, was receiving treatment at a local Cameroonian hospital for a wound to the ankle by a stray bullet, port police said in a statement.

"Merchant Marine Minister Yannis Plakiotakis... is following developments closely, along with the Greek foreign ministry and the oil tanker's operator," the merchant marine ministry statement said.

The attack occurred at around 11:30 pm (2230 GMT) on Monday, the EMA representative said, adding that there was no exchange of fire as the crew was not armed.

Cameroonian authorities have not confirmed the attack, the third such incident in a month, of which two targeted Greek vessels.

Piracy has disrupted the operations of sub-Saharan Africa's two main oil producers -- Nigeria and Angola -- and severely disrupted international maritime transport essential to the continent, costing billions of dollars.

    - Third incident in a month -

The Gulf of Guinea, which stretches some 5,700 kilometres (3,500 miles) from Senegal to Angola, has become the new world epicentre of piracy, lootings and kidnappings for ransom, especially along the Nigerian coast.

Pirates sometimes divert ships for several days, long enough to plunder the cargo and demand huge ransoms before freeing the crew.

From January to September, 82 percent of maritime kidnappings in the world occurred in the Gulf of Guinea, according to the International Maritime Bureau.

Few of the attacks are so close to shore as Tuesday's, however.

Pirates raided another Greek oil tanker, the Elka Aristote, in November around 10 nautical miles off the Togolese capital Lome, capturing four sailors.

They released three of the men on December 13, but one died in captivity.

An investigation is still under way, but "it appears his death was not a result of actions by the hostage-takers but of illness," the tanker's shipbuilder said at the time.

Pirates attacked four ships in the harbour of the Gabon capital Libreville on the night of December 21, killing a captain and kidnapping four Chinese workers whose fate remains unknown.

Despite such headline-grabbing incidents, regional navies like Nigeria's point to a decline in attacks since 2018 and say increased international cooperation, better resources and more assertive patrols are helping.

Numerous exercises with Western navies have brought some progress along with better cross-border cooperation after leaders from the region agreed to bolster the fight against piracy in 2013.

Much of the problem originates in the Niger Delta where the region's vast oil wealth has failed to trickle down to local populations and widespread poverty has stirred unrest.

Pirates emerge from the creeks and swamps in high-powered speedboats to raid passing ships, kidnap crews and spirit them back to Nigeria's shores.

Tactics have shifted over the past decade as a fall in the oil price and tighter regulation has seen criminal gangs switch from stealing cargoes of crude to abducting sailors for ransom.

ORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Coast Guard vessel with 4 crew members aboard capsized after encountering several heavy wakes in Astoria.

The 25-foot Trailerable Aids to Navigation Boat capsized just after 11:30 on Saturday morning near Pier 39 in Astoria. Watchstanders at the 13th Coast Guard District command center in Seattle received 4 alerts from Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team Astoria, which corroborated multiple good Samaritans’ reports coming in at the same time.

Around 11:50 a.m., an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast was issued and directed an Astoria Jayhawk crew and a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew to respond. Roughly 20 minutes later, crew members aboard the Columbia Bar Pilot vessel Connor Foss told the Coast Guard they had recovered the 4 Coast Guardsmen from the water after responding to the UMIB.

They awaited medical attention at the 17th Street pier as the Clatsop County Sheriff Marine Unit assisted by towing the capsized vessel to the pier. Everyone involved is in healthy condition, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard has now initiated the mishap board review process and will oversee any salvage operations.

Strange news, or rumors, from Greece – mega container ship YM WARRANTY can’t enter Piraeus port on arrival from China, via Singapore and Suez, because medical facilities can’t provide proper and reliable medical check of ship’s crew. It is said, that port’s medics refused to board the ship, to carry out crew health screening. With that said, there were no alerts from ship’s Master, that there’s anyone ill on board, or having virus-like symptoms. What’s going on, yet unclear.

A 2,076-pound great white shark tagged by the research nonprofit OCEARCH has pinged about 100 miles off of the shores of Northwest Florida.OCEARCH’s website has been tracking 11 white sharks that were tagged in fall 2019 in Nova Scotia. The shark known as Unama’ki is one of the largest and was tagged at 15 feet, 5 inches long, according to the OCEARCH website.
Unama’ki was originally tagged in September at Scaterie Island, Nova Scotia, according to OCEARCH. She has traveled over 2,000 miles since and researchers hope to gain insight into the breeding habits of great white sharks.
