    AF do something!

A massive cruise ship in Venice crashed into a dock on Sunday, plowing into a tourist boat and sending those on land running for safety, according to CNN. One onlooker called it a "scene from a disaster movie". The cruise ship, the MSC Opera, ran into the San Basilio terminal and a smaller tourist boat that was docked already. Four people suffered light injuries during the accident.

The accident happened at about 8:30am local time on the Giudecca canal, which is one of the busiest in Venice, a city that is popular with tourists. Multiple videos surfaced on Sunday showing the cruise ship, horns blaring, ramming into the dock and shoving the smaller boat out of the way.
"The noise of siren and of clash is totally frightening, looking like a scene from a disaster movie," wrote one Twitter user, Tancredi Palmeri.
The operator of the ship, MSC Cruises, said the ship experienced "a technical issue" while heading toward the terminal for mooring.

Yeah, it's called complete failure of computer control systems.

We drill for just such emergencies...when the ever $#@!ing computers abandon ship without proper authority and leave you with 20000 tons of out of control steel.

    Joy.

SARASOTA — A day of fishing on the Gulf turned to terror on Sunday when a Sarasota charter captain, allegedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs, became angry, threatened to shoot his passengers and then shot a handgun into the water from the vessel’s flying bridge, all about 60 miles offshore, police reports show.

Bradenton’s Carlo Lopeparo paid $2,000 for the 12-hour fishing trip Sunday for his friends and family, but the trip turned sour about seven hours later after the group had caught their limit of red snapper.

Sarasota Police reports indicate an altercation occurred between charter Captain Mark Bailey, 36, and Jason Rialmo Jr., 15, the son of one of the five passengers, Jason Rialmo, 39.

Bailey did not return calls or text messages from the Herald-Tribune seeking comment.

According to reports, sometime after 1:45 p.m., Lopeparo sent Rialmo Jr. to get him a beer from the captain’s pail on the second deck. But Bailey, the captain, told the boy to put the beer back. Rialmo Jr. apparently believed Bailey was joking and took the beer anyway, the report said.

Bailey followed the boy down the ladder and grabbed him by a chain necklace he was wearing, breaking it.

Lopeparo, 35, the boy’s uncle, was upset about the alleged assault and began “yelling and screaming” at the captain and the first mate, Devin Scott Kissell, 35. Lopeparo went into the cabin with Bailey attempting to follow him, but other passengers — Christopher Giuffre, 53, and Christopher Giuffre Jr., 23 — stopped the captain, asking him to leave Lopeparo alone.

Bailey was angry, but agreed, the report said.

The captain exchanged words with Rialmo Jr., who stood his ground, and the captain insisted that it was his vessel and “he can do what he wants.”

Giuffre Sr. told police later that Bailey began drinking beer and rum heavily, and said he believed the captain was taking drugs. He said he saw Bailey smoking a “joint,” and Rialmo Sr. said he saw the captain snorting cocaine.

According to the report, Bailey called Giuffre Jr. up to the second deck to talk to him and said, “I have a 9 mm and if I want, I will put a bullet in each of your heads and leave you out here.”

    Driving in circles

The captain drove the boat another 10 to 15 miles farther out and the group continued to fish, but the mood on the boat was awful, the report said. Giuffre Sr. asked the first mate to tell the captain to return the boat to shore around 2:45 p.m. — five hours before they were scheduled to complete the trip.

On the way back, the passengers later told police, they said they heard six or seven gunshots, as Bailey shot his handgun from the upper deck.

From 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., the captain continued to drink rum and take drugs, according to the report, pretending to go to shore, but just circling. Passengers used a compass on a cellphone to confirm they were not moving toward shore, but were in fact going in circles.

Every time they tried to speak to the captain, Bailey was more and more inebriated, Giuffre Sr. told police.

“We had no control and no way to get back,” the passenger said. “I believe he didn’t want to dock completely wasted and was buying time.”

When the boat got within 10 to 15 miles of Sarasota, Bailey allegedly ran north and south from Anna Maria Island to Sarasota Bay and Marina Jack, but he did not dock. A flurry of text messages from Giuffre Jr.’s wife and mother came in. The 15-year-old told them what was happening and called 911 and the Coast Guard.

Bailey told Rialmo Sr. that Lopeparo had to pay him, otherwise he was not going to bring the boat ashore, police reports show. The captain allegedly threatened that “he had his buddies at the dock for them.”

Lopeparo paid $2,000 — $1,600 for the charter and a $400 tip to the first mate — but Bailey continued to steer the boat in circles, away from shore for another 2½ hours until finally returning to the dock at Marina Jack.

More than a dozen Sarasota police and Coast Guard officers were waiting for him. He had bloodshot eyes and slurred his speech, reports said. He refused to take an alcohol breath test and was arrested on charges of boating under the influence.

Bailey demanded to speak with a supervisor on scene and kicked the rear patrol door of a Sarasota police car while he was handcuffed inside. An officer opened the door to check on Bailey, who smiled and laughed, reports show.

While attempting to re-secure Bailey, the captain placed his hands in the rear window preventing officers closing it. Bailey removed them when other officers were approaching to assist.

Authorities completed the investigation at about 7 a.m. Sunday.

Kissell, the first mate, who attempted to calm Bailey during the trip, took the cooler of red snapper home with him and filleted it, according to Giuffre Jr., who added that he met up with Lopeparo later that day to give him the fish.

“We were ready to give up the fish, but the first mate said it was the least he could do,” Giuffre Jr. said.

    ‘Fear for my life’

Lopeparo said he has hired Bailey in the past and always had a good time, adding that Bailey would have “a beer or two, nothing major, usually when we were close to land after the day was pretty much over.”

“I just expected to take my family and friends out like I do every year on June 1,” Lopeparo said. “I wasn’t planning on being in fear for my life for 17 hours.”

Bailey paid $620 bail and was released from jail. No other charges have yet been filed, but the Coast Guard investigation is still in progress.

Lopeparo told the Herald-Tribune that Bailey sent him text messages after he was released from jail that said, “Sorry you guys had to wait around through all that,” and “Are you guys OK?”

“He took our $1,600 we paid him to put us in this hostage situation,” Giuffre Jr. said. “And we paid for his freedom.”

Giuffre Jr. said there was a point when the passengers discussed overtaking the captain and tying him up, but because of his vantage point on the second deck, and the fact he had a handgun, there was no chance to scale the ladder to reach him without risking injury.

“He clearly has the gun within arms reach of him,” Giuffre Jr. said. “It was the most helpless situation that I could imagine to be in. Everyone was just helpless — a real-life hostage situation.”

Lopeparo said “somebody should be held accountable.”

A party of sport fishermen had a rare brush with a huge great white shark Monday off the coast of New Jersey. In an encounter that was very similar to a scene from the 1975 blockbuster "Jaws," the shark came right up to the stern of the boat and grabbed a bag of ground up fish bait called chum.
The once-in-a-lifetime experience was caught on video and has shark researchers buzzing.
"We've fished for sharks a lot and never seen anything like that. We were amazed by how big it was," said captain Jeff Crilly, owner of Big Nutz Required II, a 31-foot Bertram sport boat.

Crilly, 31, estimates the shark's length was more than half the size of the boat, or 16 to 18 feet.
"It was harder to guess the weight because we had nothing to compare it to, but it was probably about 2,000 pounds," Crilly said.

A party of fishermen about 30 miles southeast of the Manasquan Inlet got a shocking visitor: a huge great white shark.
Crilly and a five-man crew were participating in a mako shark tournament and had several types of bait in the water as attractants, including the body of a small tuna drifting on a rope and the chum.
The shark was not hooked and, after stealing the bag of bait, swam off on its own power and vanished, Crilly said. The encounter lasted a couple of minutes.
They were positioned about 30 miles southeast of Manasquan Inlet in Manasquan, N.J., in an area with a water depth of 110 feet, home of the wreck of the R.P. Resor, an oil tanker that was torpedoed in 1942 during World War II.
On board was Ray Kerico, Sean Smida, Steve Minkena and Kevin Schellar.

Crilly, an experienced captain, has won several local shark fishing competitions.
The length of the shark is the same as social media sensation Mary Lee the Shark, a great white shark that weighed 3,500 pounds in 2012 when researchers put a satellite tag on her.
Mary Lee's satellite tag went silent in June 2017 when she was just miles from Beach Haven, but the shark-tracking organization OCEARCH that tagged her believe she's still alive.

An advanced U.S. Navy combat ship that is slated to be commissioned as the U.S.S. Billings collided with a berthed freighter in Montreal on Monday, FreightWaves reported. Both ships were damaged as a result, but their crews were safe. The U.S. Freedom-class littoral combat ship hit the M/V Rosaire A. Desgagnes at about 2PM on Monday, according to Lt. Cmdr. Courtney Hillson, a Navy spokesperson.

The Billings is 378 feet long and sustained damage below the waterline as a result. The damage to the 452 foot dry bulk vessel it collided with has not been fully assessed yet. The bulk vessel is owned by Quebec-based Transport Desgagnés.
The U.S. Navy is reportedly still investigating the incident and despite the fact that the Billings was "capable" of making it to its Florida homebase, it is being kept in Montreal for additional damage assessments.
Hillson said: “The Navy is conducting an investigation to understand what happened and why. We will incorporate lessons learned to ensure we conduct safe and effective operations.”

An American tourist has died in a shark attack while snorkeling with her family in the Bahamas, authorities say.

Royal Bahamas Police Force Deputy Commissioner Paul Rolle says 21-year-old Jordan Lindsey of Torrance, California, was attacked by three sharks near Rose Island around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The U.S. State Department confirmed to USA TODAY that a U.S. citizen died of her injuries following a shark attack on June 26.

KABC-TV says Lindsey's parents and other family members saw the sharks and yelled a warning but she didn't hear them in time. Officials say her arms, legs and buttocks were bitten and her right arm was severed.

Video Shows Frantic Moments Before Historic Schooner’s Collision with Containership

    https://gcaptain.com/video-shows-fra...containership/

June 14, 2019 by Mike Schuler

Some new video today from on board the Elbe No. 5 shows the moments just prior to the historic schooner’s collision with a containership on the Elbe River near Hamburg last week.

As we reported, the Elbe No. 5 partially sank after it collided with the 150-meter containership Astrosprinter near Hamburg last Saturday afternoon. Nine injuries were reported among the 43 people on board the vessel.

In the video, you can see someone aboard the schooner give five short blasts of the horn as the containership closes in in the distance. Later someone seems to yell something which sounds like “hard to port”. The video cuts out before the collision, but we know how it ended:

Built in 1883, the Elbe No. 5 is Hamburg’s oldest wooden ship still in operation, according to Hamburg Maritime Foundation, which has owned the ship since 2002. The Elbe No. 5 originally operated as a pilot vessel for more than 30 years, but later used as a private yacht, credited with making 13 transatlantic crossings, according to Hamburg Maritime Foundation’s website.

Saturday morning, Salvini tweeted a video of the ship's arrival, writing "Outlaw commander arrested. Pirate ship confiscated. Maxi-fine to a foreign NGO. Migrants distributed to other European countries. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED."

A Sea Watch spokesman based in Germany said on Saturday that the charges against Rackete and the reason she was arrested "remained unclear" and that the organization was awaiting more information.
The captain was notified on Friday that she was under investigation for facilitating unlawful immigration, the spokesman said.

They do both...clear sea lanes and tow stuck vessels to open water.

I've run a polar class vessel, but not an icebreaker.

Would be nice to serve on one before I hang it up.

Fun fact, they are not designed to "plow" into the heaviest ice, but to actually push up on top of it, using the 75,000 HP and 35,000 tons of steel to crush the ice underneath, then push it aside.

I would think you would want to serve on a Whaler instead.
