Gun Owners of America leader attacks MAGA again:

'Stab in the back': Gun activist hard-liners accuse Trump of betrayal over 'bump stock' ban

    by Steven Nelson
    | December 19, 2018
President Trump's Tuesday announcement of a bump stock ban is upsetting members of a core constituency: gun owners wooed by his effusive campaign-trail vows to defend the Second Amendment, with two groups promising to see Trump in court.
"If there's anything that irritates you more than a president like Obama who's trying to stab you in the heart, it's one who is trying to stab you in the back," said Michael Hammond, legislative counsel of Gun Owners of America, a group that claims more than 1.5 million members.

    December 26, 2018

(CNN) - A gun rights group is taking the Trump administration to court over the ban on bump stocks.

The Gun Owners of America filed a lawsuit against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on Wednesday.

The group says the ban, which was announced last week, is illegal and the lawsuit is asking for a court injunction to stop its enforcement.

Rurals consider 2nd Amendment sanctuary declarations

    By Ed Pearce |
    Mar 05, 2019
MINDEN, Nev. (KOLO) Few issues have exposed the political and cultural divide between rural and urban Nevada like recent passage of SB143.

It was born of an initiative petition which led to a ballot question passed by the voters, rejected as unenforceable by former Governor Brian Sandoval and Attorney General Adam Laxalt, but was given new immediacy by the Las Vegas mass shooting.

Governor Sisolak campaigned on it as did a number of southern Nevada legislators and it found an early quick passage in this legislative session.

Those opposed could only stand back and register their complaint. Now they are doing something more.

Some rural county sheriffs are taking the lead,

Eureka County Sheriff Jesse Watts sent a letter to the governor saying he would refuse to stand by while citizens are turned into criminals by the "unconstitutional actions of misguided politicians."

Others are urging their local governments to pass resolutions declaring their counties Second Amendment Sanctuaries.

Such measures are being considered in Elko, Lander and Lyon, as well as other counties. In Douglas County, the issue is being driven by the county commission.

Sheriff Dan Coverley describes himself as a strong Second Amendment supporter who believes the new law is misguided and unenforceable, and won't make his community any safer.

"I think it just makes it more difficult for people who follow the rules to do something with their property. And that's what this is in this instance. It's their property."

Bump Stocks Are Now Illegal, Thanks to NRA Favorite Donald Trump

    By Adam K. Raymond
    3/26/2019

As of today, owning a bump stock, the device that allows a semiautomatic rifle to fire continuously with a single pull of a trigger, is illegal in the United States.

Nineteen months after Stephen Paddock opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers in Las Vegas, killing 58 and wounding hundreds more, the niche accessory that allowed him to fire more quickly (but also less accurately) has been officially banned. The move faced a flurry of legal challenges before going into effect Tuesday. But while several individual bump-stock owners have been granted a stay, Chief Justice John Roberts declined to stop the government from enforcing the ban. A second request to block the ban is pending in front of Justice Sonia Sotomayor and she’s expect to uphold it.

That means a measure that has been called “the most significant new federal gun control measure in recent memory” will come into effect thanks to a Republican president elected with the help of the NRA.

It’s not hard to imagine the type of hysteria this move would have caused if it had happened under President Obama. But his administration argued it was up to Congress to ban bump stocks. The Trump administration took a different view. Under then–acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker, the Department of Justice reinterpreted existing federal law and moved forward with the ban by changing regulations. It’s the kind of thing that would have had Second Amendment absolutists taking to the streets four years ago.

INDIANAPOLIS — Oliver L. North announced on Saturday that he would not serve a second term as the National Rifle Association’s president, deciding to step down as the organization grappled with a bitter dispute over its future and its worst leadership crisis in decades.
He made the announcement as the N.R.A. faced a challenge from the New York attorney general, Letitia James, who had opened an investigation into the gun group’s tax-exempt status.
On Friday, Ms. James’s office sent letters instructing the N.R.A. and affiliated entities, including its charitable foundation, to preserve relevant financial records. Some of the N.R.A.’s related businesses also received subpoenas, according to people with knowledge of the inquiry. Both the attorney general’s office and a lawyer for the N.R.A. confirmed the investigation.

The move by Ms. James came amid a stunning internal power struggle that took a major turn on Saturday when Mr. North, in a letter that was read on his behalf at the N.R.A.’s convention, said he would not be renominated. He and insurgents in the N.R.A. this past week had been trying to oust Wayne LaPierre, the group’s longtime chief executive.

Gun Owners of CA Joins First Major 2nd Amendment SCOTUS Case In Ten Years

Decision could turn California into a ‘shall-issue’ state

By Katy Grimes, May 17, 2019
As several new gun control bills passed out of the California Senate Appropriations Committee Thursday, I spoke with Sam Paredes, Executive Director of Gun Owners of California. “It was an ugly day,” Paredes said.
However, Gun Owners of California may be looking at good news on the horizon. Since the Supreme Court’s Second Amendment decisions in Heller v DC 2008 and McDonald v Chicago in 2010, questions continually arise concerning the scope of government’s power to infringe and even restrict the possession and use of all firearms, through regulations that impose harsh conditions and requirements on gun owners.
In January, the United States Supreme Court announced its decision to hear a case that challenges New York City’s near-prohibition on owning or transporting handguns. This is significant for Californians as the Golden State also has such restrictive gun laws.

Gun Owners of California joined the California Rifle and Pistol Association to file an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court regarding New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. City of New York, to decide whether New York City’s ban on transporting a licensed, locked and unloaded handgun to a home or shooting range outside city limits is consistent with the Second Amendment, the commerce clause and the constitutional right to travel. Their joint brief supports the parties challenging New York City’s restrictive handgun licensing prohibition scheme as a violation of the Second Amendment and other constitutional rights.

Paredes explained that New York City “allows” its citizens to own a gun and keep it at home, but they can only transport their gun to and from a city-sponsored gun range, of which there are only three. New York City gun owners are not allowed to travel with their guns to competitions even within the state, to a second home within the state, out of state, or anywhere other than the city-sanctioned gun ranges.

Gun Owners of America Sues Trump Admin Over 'Unconstitutional' Banning of Bump Stocks

A gun rights activist group has sued President Donald Trump’s administration, arguing that the recent ban on bump stocks was unconstitutional and illegal.
Gun Owners of America, a gun rights activist group and lobbying organization, announced on Wednesday filed a lawsuit in Western Michigan against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and its Acting Director Thomas Brandon; Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker; and the Department of Justice.
Erich Pratt, executive director of GOA, said the suit challenged the legality of the ATF’s actions with regard to bump stock regulations and requested an injunction to stop the regulations from taking effect.
“These dangerous regulations can go much farther than just bump stocks,” Pratt said. “The goal of the anti-gun left is, ultimately, not just banning bump stocks, but, rather, putting ‘points on the board’ toward its goal of banning civilian ownership of all firearms.”

NRA Faces Uncertain Future After Departure of Longtime PR Firm

    By Asher Stockler On 5/30/19

    U.S.
Ackerman McQueen, the controversial Oklahoma-based public relations firm widely regarded to have helped shape the National Rifle Association (NRA) into a national political and cultural force, has moved to terminate its nearly 40-year relationship with the gun-rights group.
“Faced with the NRA’s many inexplicable actions that have constructively terminated the parties’ Services Agreement, Ackerman McQueen decided it is time to stand up for the truth, and formally provide a Notice to Terminate its almost four-decade long relationship with the National Rifle Association,” Ackerman told Newsweek in a written statement.

This news comes amid a maelstrom of controversy for both the NRA and its PR firm. The NRA sued Ackerman in April over an alleged failure to provide billing records related to multiple transactions under scrutiny from, among others, the attorney general of New York, where the NRA has its charter.

It is difficult to overstate how synonymous the NRA and Ackerman have appeared to outside observers. Robert Spitzer, the author of The Politics of Gun Control, told Newsweek that the NRA and its operations have been “intimately associated with Ackerman McQueen for 30 year

2nd Amendment Right's activists push for gun sanctuaries in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) — Residents from across the county came to hear from local leaders about different issues that affect our rights as citizens.
The town hall covered topics tonight ranging from Right-to-Life and the 10th Amendment but the biggest talker was protecting Second Amendment rights.
"I'd like to see my son and my grandson be able to enjoy the same freedoms that I enjoyed all of my life so I've always been a great second amendment supporter and I'm still a second amendment supporter," Gun owner Tom Shafer said.
Shafer came today in support of hearing what local legislators had to say about new laws being passed.
"It's important that we go, it's important that we write, it's important that we call, and it's important that we vote," State Representative David Campbell (R-Oakland) said.

Being vocal with local legislators was a big point made by residents and County Board Members.
"We want the doers here," Effingham County Board member David Campbell said. "I don't care if there's only five people here. If you're doers, that's the people we want here."
Gun sanctuaries-which tries to limit U.S. gun control- was a hot topic.
"It's really push back to the General Assembly who is passing all kinds of laws as it relates to our second Amendment," Town Hall organizer Rosanna Pulido said. "We wanted to see Sangamon County be a Sanctuary County for gun owners."
According to local county board members, 70 Illinois counties are gun sanctuaries and Sangamon County gun owners are calling for action to follow.
"If they see Sangamon do it they're going to jump on it, a lot of the other ones will get on board," Campbell said.

'Gun-grabber-in-chief': Conservatives turn on Trump as threat to confiscate guns prompts Second Amendment-related outrage

'He's a fraud and has betrayed us twice now'

    Thursday 1 March 2018

Donald Trump has sparked fury among gun owners and conservatives after repeatedly backing proposals to tighten gun control laws.

The US President called for a “beautiful” bill that would expand background checks on gun buyers, prevent mentally ill people from accessing firearms, and restrict teenagers from buying assault weapons.

The 71-year-old's comments in the hour-long televised meeting with politicians put him at odds with the National Rifle Association (NRA), the gun lobbying organisation which made record contributions to his 2016 presidential campaign.

Michael Hammond, lawyer for Gun Owners of America, another gun group with more than a million members, accused Mr Trump of becoming the “gun-grabber-in-chief”.

“If he succeeds in doing everything he talked about in the meeting, he will far surpass Barack Obama as an enemy of the Second Amendment,” he said.
After the meeting, far-right news outlet Breitbart ran a headline reading: "Trump the Gun Grabber: Cedes Dems' Wish List— Bump Stocks, Buying Age, 'Assault Weapons,' Background Checks.”
Many conservatives also took to social media to express their outrage.

“Hate has no place in our country and we’re going to take care of it,” Trump told reporters as he prepared to board Air Force One to return to Washington, D.C.
Trump said he will make a statement Monday on the two mass shootings over the weekend and what can be done in response. Trump said he has also spoken with Attorney General William Barr and FBI Director Christopher Wray about the mass violence.

Pro-gun rally by thousands in Virginia ends peacefully

By ALAN SUDERMAN and SARAH RANKIN 2 hours ago

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Tens of thousands of gun-rights activists from around the country rallied peacefully at the Virginia Capitol on Monday to protest plans by the state’s Democratic leadership to pass gun-control legislation — a move that has become a key flash point in the national debate over gun violence.

Monday’s rally was organized by an influential grassroots gun-rights group, the Virginia Citizens Defense League. The group holds a yearly rally at the Capitol, typically a low-key event with a few hundred gun enthusiasts listening to speeches from a handful of Republican lawmakers. But this year’s event was unprecedented. Second Amendment groups have identified the state as a rallying point for the fight against what they see as a national erosion of gun rights.

The pushback against proposed new gun restrictions began immediately after Democrats won majorities in both the state Senate and House of Delegates in November, with much of the opposition focused on a proposed assault weapons ban. More than 100 localities have since passed measures declaring support for the Second Amendment.

Erich Pratt, senior vice president of Gun Owners of America, said voters need to replace the Democrats in control of the government in Virginia.

“We need to throw the bums out. We need to clean house in the next election,” he told the crowd.

Panic over peaceful Virginia gun rights rally shows the bigotry of gun control activists

Activists, politicians and journalists found it easy to equate civil libertarians, organized around the defense of constitutional rights, with an invasion by white supremacists determined to sow chaos.

By Jacob Sullum Jan 29, 2020
Gun rights advocates attend a rally organized by The Virginia Citizens Defense League on Capitol Square near the state capitol building on Jan. 20, 2020 in Richmond, Virginia. Photo by Zach Gibson/Getty Images After a gun rights rally in Richmond came and went last week without the “violence, rioting, and insurrection” predicted by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, Talia Lavin could not believe her eyes, and she urged the rest of us not to believe our eyes either. “It seems myopic at best to describe the Monday event as ‘peaceful,’” Lavin wrote in a GQ article about the rally, which attracted thousands of armed Second Amendment supporters energized by Northam’s gun control agenda.
Lavin’s reality-bending assessment reflects a Manichean attitude, all too common among gun control supporters, that casts sincere policy disagreements as a battle between good and evil. That attitude explains why so many activists, politicians and journalists found it easy to equate a gathering of civil libertarians, organized around the defense of constitutional rights, with an invasion by white supremacists determined to sow chaos and provoke a race war.

Explaining his executive order banning firearms from Richmond’s Capitol Square during an annual demonstration organized by the Virginia Citizens Defense League, Northam invoked the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, which featured explicit racism, clashes between protesters and counter-protesters and deadly vehicular violence. Northam said the VCDL rally, which had been held without violence for nearly two decades, this year justified a “state of emergency” because “credible intelligence gathered by Virginia’s law enforcement agencies” suggested it would attract militant racists bent on “storming the Capitol.”

Mo Brooks, colleagues introduce bill to protect travelers with firearms
Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05), along with 13 original cosponsors, introduced the Lawful Interstate Transportation of Firearms Act on Friday.
According to a press release, the Lawful Interstate Transportation of Firearms Act would “expand the Firearms Owners’ Protection Act (FOPA) ‘transport’ definition to include ‘staying in temporary lodging, stopping for food, fuel, vehicle maintenance, an emergency, medical treatment, or any other activity incidental to the transport.'”

In addition, the bill clarifies that the ability to transport a firearm also applies to  ammunition and  detachable magazines, which are essential to the function and purpose of a firearm.
“‘The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed’ means that Americans do not relinquish their Second Amendment Rights by simply traveling across state lines,” Brooks said. “All Americans have the constitutional right to self-defense whether they are at home or traveling.”

Judge denies temporary injunction to block one-handgun-per-month law in Virginia

    By Tyler Arnol
    Jun 26, 2020
A circuit court judge in Goochland County has blocked an attempt by gun rights groups to temporarily halt the implementation of a Virginia law that will limit a person’s ability to purchase a handgun to one per month unless they meet certain criteria.Without ruling on whether the law is constitutional, Judge Timothy Sanner blocked the temporary injunction, which would have stopped the law from going into effect before the court made a ruling on its constitutionality. The court found Gun Owners of America, the Virginia Citizens Defense league and the other plaintiffs did not meet the burden of proof required for the injunction.

The decision means the law will go into effect Wednesday, but the court still will hear legal arguments about the bill before making a decision on whether it is constitutional.
