Will a third candidate enter GOP Senate primary?
by Joe Arnold

The Bluegrass Bulletin blog beat me to the punch.

I also have heard about a telephone poll in recent days regarding the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, a poll that - if establishment candidate Trey Grayson is not gaining steam against upstart Rand Paul - might encourage another Republican to enter the race. The Bluegrass Bulletin suggests philanthropist and former ambassador Cathy Bailey as the likely Republican to write one check and become an immediate contender.

But Bailey is not the only Republican to be sitting on a horde of cash. For instance, Congressman Ed Whitfield has $950,000 cash on hand, Congressman Geoff Davis reports $620,000 cash on hand in his federal campaign account, and Congressman Hal Rogers tops $1 million in his campaign funds, which are fully transferable to a Senate campaign.

All of these Congressmen have more electoral experience than either Grayson or Paul, and may have more name recognition. Just a thought as Republicans wonder who will seize the reins.

Don't forget that incumbent U.S. Senator Jim Bunning also came from the House of Representatives.

I wouldn't be surprised. Trey obviously is fighting a losing battle against such a nice principled person in Rand. The establishment needs backup

Hope more establishment republicans join the race! Just helps us more and siphons off votes from them. The only way it could hurt us is if say Bailey joined and all she did was attack rand. But what to attack him on? Either way we are good to go.

I can't believe it, but McConnell found a candidate whom the local GOP establishment would be less likely to vote for than Rand.

Bailey will be a pure Bush Republican and make Trey look like Regan.

Default Third Candidate?

Third candidate? There are already four candidates, Rand Paul, Trey Grayson, Bill Johnson, and Brian Oerther (see http://www.fec.gov/DisclosureSearch/...ection_yr=2010).
Does WHAS not know about Johnson?
So Bailey, et al, would be the fifth candidate.

Wow Rand really needs more money if these guys are going to jump in. Hopefully this upcoming money bomb will give him a boost.

I wish people here would stop assuming that everyone for Paul will stay for Paul and everyone for everyone else can be split. It is simply not true.

An extremely rich republican entering the race is only bad news. Paul is really doing well against Grayson.
