Arnold actually has a very conservative fiscal nature, but being very liberal socially scares the "Christian Conservatives". He became a Republican because he heard Nixon in the debate talking about the economy. He even gave an intro for the "Free To Choose" PBS series. California is just really really messed up financially so he is having a hard time getting things balanced out. Arnold is very nearly a Libertarian in most of his ideas.
