I don't object to genetically modified plants in principle. But I believe very firmly in preserving old-fashioned non-hybridized heirloom varieties of food plants an animals. I always make sure to plant mostly heirloom varieties in my garden.

Preserving genes of food sources is vital to the future of the world. A lack of genetic diversity led to the Irish potato famine and other crop failures. Once a gene is gone, it's gone for good.

If you want to donate money to a seed bank that isn't run by Monsatan, there's the Kew project:

Support companies that promote heirloom varieties.
Do web searches for "heirloom seeds" and "heirloom plants" when you plan your garden.
A few that come to mind out of the many deserving vendors are:

I've been a member of Seed Savers Exchange for seven years. While the organization does maintain a select number of cultivars, the individual members preserve the bulk of what is listed in their annual listing. That's exactly the way that it should be: individuals acting in their own best interest resulting in a distributed and redundant system.

I maintain a couple dozen heirloom apple cultivars plus some other fruit trees. I have one pear that can be traced back to the Roman Empire.
