Ron Paul Beats Own Fundraising Record

    Updated 10:35 p.m.

Rep. Ron Paul, whose rock star status on the Internet has singlehandedly fueled his campaign, broke another online fundraising record.

    His very own.

On Nov. 5, which was Guy Fawkes Day, a symbol of rebellion in British history, Paul hauled in $4.3 million in 24 hours -- the most money raised online by a candidate in a single day. Today, the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, the day that helped spark the American Revolution, Paul's Web-savvy, intensely loyal supporters planned another "money-bomb." And by 9 p.m. EST, the "Paulites" had raised more than $5 million from more than 30,000 donors, bringing the Texas Republican's fundraising total this quarter to nearly $17 million. And counting.

"We'll definitely pass the 4.3 million [mark]" by midnight Monday, Jim Forsythe, the former Air Force pilot (and Bush supporter) who leads Paul's New Hampshire MeetUp group, told The Trail. Earlier today, Forsythe was one of the few speakers -- along with Rand Paul, one of the congressman's five children -- at Boston's historic Fanieul Hall. The event was shown live on Tea Party 07.

His opposition to the Iraq war sets Paul apart from the rest of the GOP field, the Paulites say, and his fiscal conservativism and fiercely libertarian, live-and-let-live views, have attracted independents, Republicans and Democrats. Though he's yet to break into double-digits in various national and state polls, he recently placed fifth among Republicans in a survey by the Concord Monitor, polling ahead of former senator Fred Thompson and behind former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee. Polls aside, he's amassed arguably the most creative group of supporters, one of whom has orchestrated the launch of the Ron Paul blimp. It's traveling around the country -- it was on South Carolina today -- and on its way to New Hamsphire for the Jan. 8 primary.

Paul's online popularity, to the surprise (and envy) of other Republican campaigns, proves to be one of the most fascinating fundraising stories of the year. He's the only candidate, Republican or Democrat, to increase his fundraising haul with every quarter, raising $640,000 in the first quarter, $2.4 million in the second, $5.1 million in the third. And more than two-thirds of the money, his aides say, has come from the Internet. In what was first seen as an overly ambitious goal, aides said they needed to raise $12 million by Dec. 31 to be able to stay competitive in the early primary states. With the money raised, campaign spokesman Jesse Benton said Paul bought television spots in Iowa and New Hampshire and radio ads in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada and Florida. Benton added that the campaign has attracted 107,000 donors this quarter, with the median contribution of about $50.

"We're in a really good position, money-wise," Benton told The Trail.

Fox and all it's affiliates really hate Ron Paul -- just like the other Fox article above just couldn't bring itself to say "6 million" instead saying "more than 5 million" and you could see that it was partially plagiarizing the AP article, so it must have been written after midnight....

That kmph article was a real joke --

"If he raises another ten million dollars, I will be astonished, simply because that ten million from people who have somehow come to believe that Ron Paul has a chance even though polls say he doesn't have a chance, and even though political wisdom says he doesn't have a chance," said Fresno State Assistant Professor of Political Science Thomas Holyoke.
I mean, where does this guy think the money is COMING from for goodness sakes? From people who won't vote? haha

Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! POLITICO: Ron Paul becomes $6 million man

Ron Paul becomes $6 million man
    By: Kenneth P. Vogel
    December 17, 2007 08:03 AM EST

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) raised an astounding $6 million and change Sunday, his campaign said, almost certainly guaranteeing he’ll outraise his rivals for the Republican nomination in the fourth quarter and likely will be able to fund a presence in many of states that vote Feb. 5.

Paul’s campaign spokesman late Sunday announced the campaign had eclipsed the $5.7 million that John Kerry raised the day after he locked up the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination – arguably the largest single-day fundraising haul in U.S. political history.

Paul, whose campaign has been embraced by a zealous community of online supporters, raised eyebrows when donors acting independently of the campaign dropped $4.2 million into his campaign coffers Nov. 5.

Huffington Post: Ron Paul Pulls $6 Million In Second 'Money Bomb' Blitz

What better record to break than your own. Ron Paul broke his own record for a single day, which was $4.3 million on Guy Fawkes Day, today by taking in over $6 million dollars. Paul also broke John Kerry's record breaking day of $5.7 million.

December 16th was the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party which is why supporters chose this date. The "Paulites" even rented a blimp which flew around over South Carolina with ads for Ron Paul on each side.

Ron Paul White House bid raises $4.5 million (Reuters)

Ron Paul White House bid raises $4.5 million

Sun Dec 16, 10:20 PM ET

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, an anti-war libertarian who has clashed with his rivals over Iraq, raised a record $4.5 million in a one-day Internet fund-raising event on Sunday, his campaign said in a statement.

Paul's campaign said the Texas congressman had received more than 41,000 donations by early evening, shattering a $4.2 million record in a 24-hour period last month.

So far, the campaign has taken in over $16 million in the fourth quarter with two weeks remaining, the statement said.

Paul, an obstetrician-gynecologist from the Houston area, has been a formidable presence in Republican presidential debates, challenging top rivals like former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Sen. John McCain and strongly condemning the Iraq war.

Paul still registers low in national polls of the November 2008 elections race, but routinely scores much higher in Internet surveys and snap polls taken after debates.

    Dutch Internet Coverage

I dunno if this belongs here, it's in dutch, not english.

    Presidentskandidaat haalt recordbedrag op
    (Link: ht tp://frontpage.fok.nl/nieuws/85523)
The title translates as 'Presidential candidate raises record sum'.

The site in question is a generic discussion site but has discussed Ron Paul before (primarily the blimp). The article itself is positive as are most of the comments.

There are some negative comments, but they appear to be of the 'All US politicians are evil and should be publicly horsewhipped, tarred, feathered and shipped home cattleclass' variety* or by people who don't understand the intricacies of the US political system. Remember that this is foreign news in the Netherlands. The average american probably wouldn't understand the average european government formation either.

*) I don't fundamentally disagree, except I would say 'Most politicians . . . ' and not discriminate about nationality. Yes, I am dutch.

ABC News: Paul Raises $6 Million in 24-Hour Effort

Paul Raises $6 Million in 24-Hour Effort
Presidential Hopeful Ron Paul Raises $6 Million in 24-Hour 'Money Bomb'
    The Associated Press

    COLUMBIA, S.C.

Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul's supporters raised over $6 million Sunday to boost the 10-term Texas congressman's campaign for the White House.

Called a "Money Bomb," the goal was to raise as much money as possible on the Internet in one day. The campaign's previous fundraiser brought in $4.2 million.

At midnight EST, donations were over $6 million, according to the campaign Web site. Those donations are processed credit card receipts, said Paul campaign spokesman Jesse Benton. Benton said the median donation is about $50 in the fundraiser, which was the idea of Paul supporters who are not officially connected to the campaign.

Trevor Lyman, a Paul supporter who is traveling the country following the Ron Paul blimp, said the date of the fundraiser coincides with the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party.

The Ron Paul blimp is an aerial billboard emblazoned on one side with "Who is Ron Paul? Google Ron Paul." The other side reads "Ron Paul Revolution." The blimp, another grass-roots effort, was in Chester, S.C., on Sunday, and organizers hope to get it to New Hampshire before the Jan. 8 primary there.

Boston Globe: Ron Paul backers stage Boston Tea Party, raise millions

By Michael Levenson, Globe Staff | December 17, 2007

Ron Paul supporters marched through the snow yesterday from the State House to Faneuil Hall, then smashed the one-day fund-raising record for a Republican presidential candidate.

As of 10 last night, the supporters said, they had raked in about $5.2 million, surpassing the record $4.2 million they raised on Nov. 5.

Most of the donations were made over the Internet in what the supporters called a "money bomb" timed to coincide with the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. The last fund-raising blitz, which took in 40,000 donations, was timed to coincide with Guy Fawkes Day, which commemorates a British mercenary who tried unsuccessfully to kill King James I on Nov. 5, 1605.

"This basically shows that Ron Paul is a viable candidate," said Rachael McIntosh, a spokeswoman for what was dubbed Boston TeaParty07. "People are so engaged in this campaign because it's coming from the grass roots."

The supporters of the Texas congressman pick anniversaries of such historical events to highlight what they call the "Ron Paul Revolution."

Paul has stood out from the Republican field with his libertarian views and his opposition to the Iraq war. While he has remained in the single digits in polls nationally and in New Hampshire and Iowa, the fund-raising success has separated him from other lower-polling candidates and has enabled him to air TV ads in New Hampshire.

His supporters are unusually enthusiastic. Yesterday, one waved a yellow "Don't Tread on Me" flag on Beacon Street in front of the State House while a dozen others clutched Ron Paul placards in the sleet.

McIntosh said 400 supporters later marched to Faneuil Hall, where about 700 people listened to speeches by Rand Paul, the candidate's son; Carla Howell, a libertarian who ran unsuccessfully for Massachusetts governor in 2002; and others.

Supporters also reenacted the dumping of tea in Boston Harbor by tossing banners that read "tyranny" and "no taxation without representation" into boxes that were placed in front of an image of the harbor.
