Just like the title says, the CEO of United Healthcare was shot and killed this morning in NYC.

Is this random, targeted, or a drug-fueled h0m0 thing?

I must say, there have to be no shortage of people who have been cheated by corporate 'murika and especially in the healthcare/insurance field.

While I don't approve of murder, it does seem a bit cathartic knowing that the CEO class sometimes get some real life consequences.

As usual the reporting is abominable on this story. I think the gunman probably made a clean getaway and TBH there's stuff that CEOs do just in their normal line of duties that would piss someone off to this point.

I can't speak for all corporations but I haven't worked for a company that actually fired people for like 16 years. It's gotten to the point where companies will just keep people on all year despite serious problems and then there's this whole dog-and-pony-show at the end of the year where they don't have enough resources to continue employing everyone and lay a bunch of people off. Most of the time everyone looks around at who's gone and realizes it's all dead weight - but good employees also regularly get caught in that net. And inevitably, after making all these sour faces about budgets, then they hand out bonuses.

I mean I'm not saying someone who would murder someone else for this is a good employee - just pointing out CEOs are generally all cowards who make bad decisions and hide behind imaginary budget constraints, so I'm not surprised one would be targeted.

The number of people who get "cheated" as a percentage is quite small, although they should work to minimize it.

This guy only made $10 million a year as CEO.. that's nothing. Rachael Maddow makes $30 million a year to lie on TV once a week..

Some of the claims should be denied, per the contract, some that should not end up getting denied sometimes due to the scaling problem, having tens of millions of customers.

The reason they deny claims is to reduce their expenses to lower the price of insurance for everyone else. Insurance is like $700/month, $8k per year. It's $#@!ing insane. It's not the insurance companies' fault healthcare is such a mess and so expensive, it's the government's fault for being so involved in healthcare.

Thompson exercised stock options and sold shares worth $15.1 million on Feb. 16, less than two weeks before news of the federal antitrust probe went public, according to a Crain’s New York Business report from April.

The stock price dropped sharply after the revelation that the DOJ was investigating whether the company had made acquisitions that consolidated its market position in violation of antitrust laws, a source familiar with the probe told the outlet.

Thompson, 50, along with UnitedHealth Group chairman Stephen Helmsley, Chief People Officer Erin McSweeney and Chief Accounting Officer Tom Roos, sold a combined $101.5 million in shares, with Helmsley personally netting just shy of $85 million, according to the report.

The Change unit was breached by a hacking group called ALPHV, also known as "BlackCat." UnitedHealth first reported the breach on Feb. 21. The breach caused widespread disruptions in claims processing, impacting patients and providers across the country. In June, UnitedHealth issued a public notice about the ransomware hack as part of its requirements to notify the estimated one-third of the country whose private data may have been exposed in the attack.


As far as the stock is concerned, was it fear of the DOJ investigation or fear of bad news from hackers? I don't think it was pissed off investors because he would have been taken out in February

My favorite random comment on this so far was that all it would take is for a claim to be denied for a dying child or wife of an operator for this to have happened.


No, actually my favorite was that the CEO was going to make it but then the insurance company required that he do six months of physical therapy before getting the bullets removed.

The suit accused the executives of selling a combined $120 million in company shares before a U.S. Department of Justice antitrust investigation was disclosed publicly.

The DOJ’s probe was related to UnitedHealth Group’s 2021 acquisition of Change Healthcare, which processes medical claims.

It's not "people are saying" - this is less complicated than a "spot the difference" activity designed for 8 year olds.

I'm sure it'll be all settled though - after they've surrounded a house and burned it down, whatever charred bones they take out of there are guaranteed to be the guy.

The coat and hood are definitely different. That is 100% certain. It's less clear to me that the face is different. But it looks different to me.

I think it's possible. The first impression created by those pictures, especially if they're not put side-by-side is that they are thought to be the same person. But this impression is created by the similar clothing. Apart from that, there's little to go on. And once you look at them side by side with any attention to detail, it becomes clear that the clothing is different.

That said, I'm not sure if it is even alleged that they are the same person. It's possible that he's a person of interest even if it's known that he's not the same guy. And it's also possible that the similarity of the clothing is just a coincidence and that the cops recognize that the clothes are different and believe that the guy changed clothes. Who knows what they do and don't know and aren't talking about publicly.

It's not the insurance companies' fault healthcare is such a mess and so expensive, it's the government's fault for being so involved in healthcare.

The insurance companies are not innocent or blameless.

It's not like they just wanted to mind their own business, but the government barged in and messed things up, and the insurance companies had to be dragged into it kicking and screaming.

The government is indeed the ultimate source of the problem, but "it takes two to tango", as they say - and insurance company lobbyists know all the steps.
