If I remember correctly, a while ago, NYC made some regs about aftermarket batteries. It might have been from this incident.
I can see why some aftermarket batteries might be more prone to doing this, but we've seen Teslas do the same thing.
I'm not a battery expert, but I think that these batteries misbehave when they've been heavily drained and/or being charged.
I assume that this guy just got done riding or just got done charging the battery.
Do not try to cram 500 megajougles of energy into a 100 megajoule sack.
