The Aspen Ideas Festival is a program of the Aspen Institute.

    2018.

Humans are tribal. But in America today, the allure of tribalism takes us down one treacherous path after another. American political elites have ignored the group identities that matter most to ordinary Americans. Identity politics have seized both the left and right in an especially dangerous, racially inflected way to the point that every group now feels threatened. To survive, America must transcend tribal fears and loyalties and forge an authentic national identity: one that acknowledges the reality of group differences and fights the deep inequities that divide us. Underwritten by Koch Industries.

    Speakers: J.D. Vance, Amy Chua

So, did a little research as I literally did not know who this guy was, though I feel like I had heard his name thrown around.

So he grew up lower-middle class.
    Joined marines.
I assume GI billed his way through Yale (which means his IQ is high).
Met an Indian chick who he married and who clerked for John Roberts.
    Graduated in 2013.
Wrote Hillbilly Elegy in 2016 which sounds like a boring ripoff of themes outlined in Thomas Sowell's "White Liberals and Black Rednecks".
Then got bankrolled by 213th richest man in the world who made him partner in venture capital firm.
Converts to Catholicism (wife remains Brahmin Hindu but 'supports him').
Billionaire then bankrolls his senate run (along with 180K from AIPAC).
Spends less than two years in Senate and is now VP pick.

...amazing grass roots story. Just like Obama.

He never held any other politician positions prior to being in the Senate? I could have sworn he was a member of Congress. Unless I'm confusing him with somebody else.

Nope. Obama was a statesmen by comparison, serving as Illinois state senator from 1997-2004 before being sworn into U.S. senate in 2005.

    hmm.

Norman Ornstein — who is an emeritus scholar at the Koch-funded American Enterprise Institute — said that Vance "is not a leader."

"He is a pandering, cowardly, disgraceful lickspittle to Trump and and Putin," he said Saturday. "That he would say this is a true reflection of who he is."

This could be a interesting choice we shall see.
I dont like the pick over the Israeli support.

But American govt would be countered with Euporean Leftists so they cant throw in heavy support to Israel as they would have hoped.

everyone can think about this and decide for themselves.
it's complicated. i do think Vance being from Ohio was the kicker.

pretty soon the ball will go back to the Democrats when Not Biden is nominated.

Yea thank god. I read a headline somewhere that said trump picks Rubio. Maybe I completely misread it, but I threw up in my mouth. Then later I heard Vance. I don’t know much about him except I remember seeing him and liking his stance on a few hearings. Can’t remember the subjects but my impression was positive without knowing him well.

I've tried to track some of the important votes, and it appears that Vance votes with Rand most of the time.

There was one vote on a Rand Paul Amendment, and Vance sat it out. It was a 4th Amendment related vote:

JD Vance was 4th best in Senate according to the Republican Liberty Caucus Scorecard:

    1. Rand Paul
    2. Mike Braun
    3. Mike Lee
    4. JD Vance

Tim Scott, on the other hand, was one of the worst in the Senate. Only Romney was worse.

    This Trump IS the swamp.

He literally packed his cabinet and administration with lobbyists and industry insiders.

Other than the border, WTF did he do?

He met with Kim Jong Un and tried to cool relations.
He didn't overly expand our existing wars anymore than his predecessors.
    He began the Afghanistan withdrawal.
He pissed a lot of establishment D.C. creatures off for a variety of reasons.

I used to have a slightly longer list than this when people asked this question but I've forgotten everything else now. And no, I'm not saying these things in defense of him, per se. I do think he was leagues better than Bush, Obama and Biden, however.
