The bigger issue here is that the entire setup was a fundamental failure of event security, particularly at Secret Service level of security for a former President. I went to a Bush rally around 2004-ish, and there was literally no possible way a shooter could have fired on Bush, except from the crowd itself. They had officers in front of him to shield him in the event of something like that, as well as officers to the sides who were constantly visually sweeping through the crowd. In addition, there was a Little Bird circling the event with a sniper riding out the side with his boots on the landing rail, and held in by a strap. He was constantly scoping the crowd as well as visually sweeping the outlying area. Granted, that is security for a sitting President but ex-Prez receives near the same level of security because of the optics for US global power if an ex-Prez were to be assassinated.
The fact that Secret Service were not stationed on that roof themselves, is bonkers. If there were some kind of private-property SNAFU where the owner would not give permission, then move the event to a secure-able location. And if the Secret Service's hand were somehow forced despite objections, then you would need a bullet-proof screen in that direction along with constant overwatch (heli) of that roof and any other vulnerabilities.
I'm in no mood to "assign blame". All I know for certain is that there was a massive failure of security here.

Pennsylvania State Police have identified the two spectators wounded at the rally as 57-year-old David Dutch and 74-year-old James Copenhaver. Both men were described by the force as “in stable condition.”
Earlier on Sunday, law enforcement named the man fatally shot at the event as 50-year-old former firefighter Corey Comperatore. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said that Comperatore “died a hero,” diving over his wife and daughter to shield them when the gunman opened fire.

Doesn't sound like firing wild to me. Sounds like he had time to aim three shots minimum (Trump hit once and two bullets about a foot apart in Mr. Dutch).
To be clear, I'm hearing this from my sister-in-law, who heard it from some family member, who presumably heard it from the doctors... For all I know, it could have been the same bullet ricocheting back after hitting the bleachers or something. But it does suggest that the shooter got off several shots before being taken out. Hard to tell from the audio which shots were from which rifles.
