I thought one of the initial selling points of BTC was that it was supposed to be anonymous.

It potentially is. If your entry and exit (exchange) points are, they have no way to know who is buying and selling it. But it can be traced.

Bitcoin was never supposed to be automatically anonymous. It is not "push-button" privacy, etc. Bitcoin is a stick-shift diesel tractor and people complain that it's not an automatic-transmission minivan. You can absolutely use Bitcoin anonymously, but it's not automatic. OPSEC is longitudinal, anyway, and that's why it's not Bitcoin's fault when people expect it to be automatically anonymous but it's not. You have to know how to operate the machinery in order to operate it safely and correctly. But the fact that Bitcoin isn't a minivan doesn't mean it can't be used safely by those who know how to use it correctly.
