IL-City of Chicago sues all five major oil companies for climate change

Chicago sues five giant oil companies, accusing them of climate change destruction, fraud

    20 Feb 2024.

Chicago is suing five of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, accusing them of lying about their products and the dangers of climate change that contributes to flooding, extreme heat and other destructive forces that hurt the city and its residents.

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration filed a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court Tuesday that names BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobil and Shell, accusing the companies of discrediting science and misleading the public as the climate crisis continued to wreak havoc on the planet.

The city is also suing the trade group American Petroleum Institute, which it accuses of conspiring with the companies to deceive consumers through disinformation campaigns even as the industry acknowledged internally that climate change was real.

“The climate change impacts that Chicago has faced and will continue to face — including more frequent and intense storms, flooding, droughts, extreme heat events and shoreline erosion — are felt throughout every part of the city and disproportionately in low-income communities,” the city said in its lawsuit.

Chicago is following the lead of New York, California and other cities and states that seek to recoup potentially billions of dollars in damages blamed on the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and natural gas, that create carbon dioxide and have led to climate change. The city has not asked for a specific amount of money.

The city is asking a court to hold the companies responsible for the costs of climate change, including damage to property and infrastructure necessary to adapt.

For instance, the city said it's spending $188 million on climate projects in low-income communities.

Their idiotic DIE policy will blow up in their face. If they continued to go with logic, this lawsuit wouldn't make it anywhere. Instead, the leftist useful idiots that work for these companies are going to help cripple them.

My initial instinct is, "Good - let's finally get this litigated and have these alarmist try to prove their fantasies in court"

Then I remember they run the courts.

    Here's another approach...

Why don't the major oil companies countersue for all the benefits the city has received as a result of their use of fossil fuels?! That would include every building, every piece of machinery, every hospital, and every government office.

Not a bad idea. If it was me running one of those outfits, I'd pull all retail and wholesale operations out.

There aren't that many. Most Chicagoans fuel up in the suburbs, because metro gas taxes are insane.

The leftist cities are desperate for cash. Their shakedowns will only further drive tax revenues down.

The oil companies could do Chicago a great favor and cut off ALL fossil fuels from going to Chicago. That way Chicago can stop climate change and be free of fossil fuels. Then build a wall around them, and NYC too.

Don't they have enough problems? Stop selling fuel to the city government itself.

Same! Cut those $#@!ers off and let them live their fossil fuel free dream.
My two daughters and I were gang-raped by some of the Newcomers. It landed us in the hospital for 3 weeks as several bones were broken. I don't blame them, it was a sexual emergency and I wasn't about to go all white privilege and deny them the release they needed, especially after being stuck in a hotel for months. I see the Newcomers as family now. They are on our side and will help us stop Trump. It is a small price to pay. Anything but Trump.

This is what took down Detroit, although not at the level we're seeing in these cities today. They kept raising taxes. People and businesses kept leaving for the suburbs. The reaction was to raise taxes again and the cycle would continue.
