Bowman camp slams 'Nazi' Republicans after fire alarm flap
Republicans have vowed to punish the progressive in the wake of the incident, with one member already introducing a motion to expel him from Congress.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman is circulating a list of talking points to fellow Democrats in a bid to stop the burgeoning GOP push to punish him after he set off a House fire alarm during Saturday's chaotic spending votes.
The New York Democrat's press secretary sent a memo on Monday afternoon to all House Democratic offices requesting that they defend Bowman for the flap over the alarm, which has prompted a Republican push to sanction him. A copy of the office's communique was obtained by POLITICO.
One suggested response from Bowman’s office to questions about the incident: “I believe Congressman Bowman when he says this was an accident. Republicans need to instead focus their energy on the Nazi members of their party before anything else.”
Bowman is calling fellow Democrats to say he didn't actually approve the statement, according to one person familiar with the conversations.
Republicans have vowed to punish the progressive in the wake of the incident, with Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) introducing a resolution Monday to expel Bowman from the House. The measure has no chance of passage, given it would require a two-thirds majority and, therefore, a significant number of Democratic votes.
“We’ve dropped the resolution with twelve cosponsors, and we will continue to add more throughout the day. Mr. Bowman’s juvenile actions violated both federal and local law and he must be held accountable," Malliotakis said in a statement.
Other House Republicans are considering their own measures, including Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), whose office told POLITICO she is working on a censure resolution.
Bowman's memo includes other suggested responses for Democratic members to use and tweets to post in defense of Bowman, and underscored the progressive's Saturday statement that claimed he “didn’t mean to cause confusion” when he pulled the fire alarm.
“I was just trying to get to my vote. The door thatʼs usually open wasnʼt open. I didnʼt mean to cause confusion. I didnʼt know it was going to trip the whole building. I thought [the alarm] would help me open the door,” Bowman said Saturday.
Capitol Police have opened their own investigation into the incident. The department released a statement later Monday saying “a man” was seen trying to exit a door in the Cannon House Office Building and then pulled a fire alarm.
“USCP officers had previously placed signs with clear language that explained the door was secured and marked as an emergency exit only,” the department said.

What Happened:
On his way to votes today, Congressman Jamaal Bowman was trying to leave the Cannon House Office Building through the exit he regularly uses for votes. He was rushing to the House floor to prevent himself from missing a vote, and dueto confusing signage and an honest mistake, he pulled the alarm in an attempt to open the door. He was not attempting to delay the vote that he intended to vote yes on, and was simply just trying to rush to the Capitol. Henceforth, MAGA Republicans have used this as an opportunity to distract from their attempt to shut the government down and to minimize January 6th insurrectionists.

Suggested Talking Points:
- It is an extreme reach on the part of MAGA Republicans to assert that Rep Bowman intended to harm or destruct anyone or thing. The exact opposite is true: he was trying. to do his job.
- Look, if you've been in the Capitol complex on a weekend you'd know there's only one or two ways to get in and out and it causes confusion for staffers and members alike, but because of last minute votes caused by Republican incompetence and surprise bill drop the not all exits were staffed like usual and the signage made it even more confusing.
- Especially when you're in a rush after Republicans drop the bill text 15 minutes before the vote and the signage on the doors is unnecessarily confusing.
- Itʼs clear my colleague Congressman Bowman was simply rushing to the floor to cast his vote to prevent a shutdown and support working class families.
- Voting doesn't occur in the Cannon House Office Building, it only occurs in the Capitol. The alarm going off didnʼt interrupt our business on the floor today in the slightest.
- House Republicans are obviously trying to distract from the fact they cannot govern and that they nearly shut down the federal government for no reason.
- I believe Congressman Bowman when he says this was an accident. Republicans need to instead focus their energy on the Nazi members of their party before anything else.
- There are multiple insurrectionist supporters in Congress and more who supported a coup and support Trumpʼs Big Lie. Thatʼs what they should be focused on. Instead their focus on Rep. Bowman is an attempt to minimize January 6th.
- I know that weʼre focused on preventing a government shutdown and working towards ensuring everyone has childcare, food on the table, and the ability to thrive.
