My sense is that he was trying to impede (Interfere) with Johnson, certainly not to murder him. But he recklessly did, and he should have to pay for that. I've been watching hockey for 30+ years and I can't recall a time when a players leg got that high in the air after such a minor collision... these guys didn't learn to skate yesterday. Most of them have been skating almost as long as they've been walking. Even myself, just playing rec hockey with a lot of people who'd just recently learned to skate but for some reason think that they were Alexei Kovalev (one of the best skaters I've personally ever seen) had several collisions and my legs never got up that high like Petgrave's did.
People calling this a "freak accident", in my opinion, don't know what they're talking about, or have an agenda.
Side note, as a Pittsburgh Penguins fan, I had high hopes for Johnson - I always liked his game and was disappointed he didn't pan out in the NHL... few do. Each NHL roster has about 23 players on it (depending on salary cap issues), and there are 32 teams in the league. The population of men - men who come from all over North America, Europe, and even a few from Asia - who ARE able to make it onto a roster are literally the best hockey players in the world... even 4th liners who play 10 minutes a game.
