Right, they have a "Dead Man's Switch" that has to be held by the engineer.

Used to be a pedal. Now it's a motion sensor. No motion for a set period of time? An alarm sounds. Still no motion in the cab? Shutdown.

Yes, I saw a movie where somebody put a toolbox on the pedal.

Now how could there be a runaway these days?

Imagine how bad this story would be if people were aboard the train.

There is a Chinese cemetery nearby. Just sayin'.

It's weird if you look at Kelso, CA on google maps, then zoom out, there's a bunch of other nearby town names with nothing there.. not sure why. There are some buildings in Kelso, but just straight up desert in some of the neighboring towns.

Why does everybody cream their jeans about how "beautiful" California is?

From what I've seen, most of it is ugly ass boiling hot desert...the dark side of the moon has prettier real estate.

The desert is a cool place to visit in the fall and spring. The eastern Sierras are amazing. Then you have coastal Southern California, which is the most temperate place on the entire planet. It's like always 70 degrees. Big Sur, redwood forests in the north. Mendocino coast.

Because in the 1880s, a steam locomotive would go approximately a hundred miles on a tender full of water. So, water facilities had to be provided at regular intervals, and since alpha-numeric garbage was not yet the fashion, they got proper names.

As for why these water stops are now ghost towns, I guess not everyone can be suckered to go live in the inhospitable desert by a few photos taken with an orange filter to make the browns pop.
