House moves to repeal NFA of 1934

GOP House Members Introduce Bill to Repeal National Firearms Act

    AWR HAWKINS 25 Jan 2023

A group of Republican House members led by Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) put forth legislation Wednesday to repeal the National Firearms Act (1934), thereby stripping the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) of the ability to turn law-abiding gun owners into criminals.

The legislation is called the Repeal the NFA Act.

Burlison tweeted: “The Repeal the NFA Act will strip the ATF of its authority to criminalize lawful gun owners and undo nearly 90 years of assault on our fundamental freedoms. I’m proud to stand with Americans nationwide as we take this issue head-on.”

Burlison told the Daily Caller, “The federal government has used the National Firearms Act for almost a century to violate law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment rights. The recent ATF pistol brace rule is just another example of these blatant attacks on the constitutional rights of Americans. The ATF-NFA sham needs to end.”

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), a co-sponsor of Burlison’s bill, noted, “I applaud Rep. Burlison’s legislation that would prevent the federal government from imposing draconian registration mandates on law-abiding gun owners. Anti-gun zealots have enacted policies that create increased government bureaucracy and do nothing to reduce gun violence.”

GOP House Members Introduce Bill to Repeal National Firearms Act
Strange how bills like this are only ever introduced and allowed to proceed when they (1) have no chance of passing in both the House and the Senate, and (2) are certain to be vetoed by POTUS even if they did pass. You can bet that if the Republicans had veto-proof majorities in Congress right now, we wouldn't be hearing about this - because McCarthy & McConnell would never have permitted it.

Once again the GOP should have made these moves between 2017-2018 but chose not to. I wonder why that is.

Exactly. Plus it’s an outright lie to claim that merely repealing the NFA, although that would certainly be a good first step, would “strip the [ATF] of their ability to infringe the rights of law abiding gun owners.” The ATF’s power stems not only from NFA. But also, in large part, from the dealer licensing and record kerping requirements of the GCA68. So, failing a full repeal of GCA68 and the machine gun ban passed under Reagan as part of the Firearms Owner Protection Act ATF would still possess plenty of power to infringe the rights of innocent gun owners and dealers, and continue sending them to federal prison for decades.

    More bull$#@! political theater.

Like everyone else here, I applaud this, but wait for the day Republican politicians take this action when it can actually pass.

Their war machine buddies aren't able to slush them if people suddenly didn't have red meat issues to cry over.
Abortion isn't part of the diologue anymore and if the NFA went the Republican Party would have to start talking about spending and they'd rather ship us all off to camp than have that talk.
There are no crimes against people.
There are only crimes against the state.
And the state will never, ever choose to hold accountable its agents, because a thing can not commit a crime against itself.
