My choice of third person pronouns for myself is generally irrelevant. I'm not typically involved in the conversations that use them. It's other people referring to me in the third person, usually from a distance. I'm not a conversational partner in those exchanges. Those people could be referring to me as "That A$$hole" or "That Motherfukker" for all I know.

    He's a Progressive Democrat.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F...ical_positions

    Political positions

Fetterman is often described as a social and fiscal progressive, including by himself.[5][91] When running for Senate in 2022, Fetterman said that he is not a progressive and is "just a Democrat".[92] In 2022, The New York Times characterized Fetterman as "left-leaning".[93]

    Abortion rights

At a debate, Fetterman said regarding abortion: "That is between a woman and her physician". To the question if any exceptions exist, he said:"It’s certainly not between me or any politician. We settled this decades ago, and the fact that these states are trying to repeal it... we have to push back on that." His campaign stated: "Let's be clear: The right to an abortion is sacred. Democrats have to act quickly and get rid of the filibuster to pass the Women's Health Protection Act + finally codify Roe into law. We cannot afford to wait."[94][non-primary source needed]

    Criminal justice reform

Prison reform is one of Fetterman's signature issues, advocating for more rehabilitation action as well as clemency for model prisoners. A part of his role as lieutenant governor, he serves as the chair of Pennsylvania's Board of Pardons, which processes clemency requests and forwards them to the governor. Fetterman urged the board to process requests more quickly.[95]

Fetterman is in favor of abolishing capital punishment in Pennsylvania, stating that he "wholly support[s] Governor Tom Wolf's moratorium on the death penalty". He has called the death penalty "inhumane, antiquated, expensive, and [a] flawed system of punishment".[96]

    Environmental issues

Previously, Fetterman opposed fracking calling the practice "an environmental abomination".[97] However, he has since shifted his stance on the issue saying that he supports permitting fracking, although he advocates for stricter environmental regulations.[95] Fetterman says there needs to be a balance between decarbonization efforts and creating jobs in the fossil fuel industry. While running for lieutenant governor, Fetterman voiced his support for establishing two new fracking wells.[32] In 2021, Fetterman said that he supports moving towards a "de facto moratorium [on fracking] because the transition is going to be toward green and renewable energy".[98] Fetterman opposes the Green New Deal.[97]

    Filibuster

Fetterman supports ending the filibuster in the United States Senate.[99] He has also said that Democrats need to be more ruthless, like Republicans, in order to pass legislative priorities.[100]

    Foreign policy

In 2015, The Patriot-News described Fetterman as a "skeptic of free trade", given his opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and a non-interventionist. Fetterman has said that the United States should not "be considered the world's police officers".[9]

    Gun policy

Fetterman supports greater restrictions upon the process to buy a gun including universal background checks and the ending of loopholes that allow for the mentally ill and domestic abusers to purchase firearms.[101]

    Healthcare

Fetterman has previously described himself as a supporter of Medicare for All, saying that healthcare is a "fundamental human need and right".[91] In 2022, Fetterman avoided the term Medicare for All and stated that "Healthcare is a fundamental human right,"[102] and that he would "support whatever path" is necessary to expand healthcare accessibility including the expansion of Obamacare.[103] In debate he still says he will vote yes for Medicare for All.[104]

    Israel

Fetterman is a strong supporter of Israel–United States relations and said if he is elected as a U.S. senator, he will "lean in" on the "relationship between the United States and Israel". He said that the U.S.–Israel relationship "is a special one that needs to be safeguarded, protected, supported and nurtured through legislation and all available diplomatic efforts in the region". He supports United States foreign aid to Israel, including Iron Dome funding. Fetterman criticized Congressional Democrats who voted against Iron Dome funding, calling them "fringe" and "extreme". Fetterman has said he supports the right of Israel to defend itself and is "passionate" in his opposition to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. He supported a law signed into law by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf that barred Pennsylvania from entering into contracts with companies that boycott Israel. He supports a two state solution and the expansion of the Abraham Accords, the Arab-Israeli agreements brokered under the Trump administration.[105]

    Marijuana

Fetterman is a proponent of legalizing marijuana, calling the issue a "political bazooka" and that leaving the issue alone is giving an opportunity for another party to gain political support for a pro–marijuana legalization agenda. He argued that if conservative South Dakota voters were willing to approve a ballot measure legalizing recreational marijuana, Pennsylvania should legalize it too.[106] He also supports expunging criminal convictions related to marijuana.[107]

    Minimum wage

Fetterman supports raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour.[91]

    Policing

Fetterman has described himself as "pro-policing", including pro-community policing. He opposes defunding the police, calling the movement "absurd".[97] As lieutenant governor, Fetterman supported legislation that would only allow the police to use deadly force in situations where officers or others nearby face imminent threat of death or serious injury.[108]

    Taxation

Fetterman supports implementing a wealth tax in the United States.[109] He has stated "you know it when you see it..." and has said those "who have yachts" could be used as a potential benchmark.[110]

But look at his positions. He’s practically a (left) libertarian.

Wikipedia can be biased, especially in this case. Wouldn’t trust any of this.

Opposes the Green New Deal? Really?

    Foreign policy

In 2015, The Patriot-News described Fetterman as a "skeptic of free trade", given his opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and a non-interventionist. Fetterman has said that the United States should not "be considered the world's police officers".
    Wow. He’s Ron Paul!

He supports a two state solution and the expansion of the Abraham Accords, the Arab-Israeli agreements brokered under the Trump administration.
Well, now we know why the media is backing him, and the money is flowing into Pennsylvania to push him and attack Dr. Oz.

    Marijuana

Fetterman is a proponent of legalizing marijuana, calling the issue a "political bazooka" and that leaving the issue alone is giving an opportunity for another party to gain political support for a pro–marijuana legalization agenda. This is absolutely brilliant!

Fetterman should team up with Dan Crenshaw.

Fetterman/Crenshaw in 2024 on the Democrat ticket.

Crenshaw/Fetterman in 2024 on the Republican ticket.

    My take on John Fetterman...

He’s a 100% phony. A Soros minion employing the lie, cheat and steal method of getting elected. He is also using the Joe Biden method of hiding before the election. He would be the AOC of the Senate.

I'd wager they are aiming for the social conservatives. Everything seems to be an attempt to funnel division on that.

At some point in time I kind of liked the guy at least as a mayor where it's harder to really implement much socialism. But it seems like he's just sold his soul to the national DNC, Israel, etc. not like his spending policies would work well at a national level anyway.

It doesn't even seem like Fetterman's brain is working. I think he will just end up be a rubber stamp for the D's. I guess Herschel Walker is the red version of him.

I do think it's a bit unkind to laugh about his medical issues. I don't think I agree with him on much but I'm sympathetic to his motivation to continue after having a stroke. Sympathy however does not make him better suited for the office...

The debate is cringeworthy. Not because of the stumbling over words etc, I can deal with that and I can read between the lines and look past the condition. But I did not hear any real ideas.. Just that the other guy sucks. From Oz there was a little bit of that but also a lot of ad hominem.

A person shouldn't run for something they are not qualified to do.
Strokes are preventable. Chances are his poor lifestyle choices were the cause.

Unlike other jobs it's the voters that determine qualification in this case. In other circumstances that may be a good thing.

Fetterman wins. It's potential that he can recover from his stroke but he will still be a rubber stamp with no semblance of independence. If he is any different than the run-of-the-mill Chuck Schumer Democrat, I'd be shocked. Perhaps the biggest signal was when he got AIPAC to support him.

    THIS.

I've been meaning to post something to that effect, but haven't got around to it until now.

A lot of people - especially among those prone to thinking about politics in terms of the kinds of pieties that are found in grade-school civics-class textbooks - profess to be scandalized at the prospect of a possibly cognitively impaired (and certainly verbally impaired) person like Fetterman winning a seat in "the world's greatest deliberative body". But this vastly over-inflates the significance of particular individuals with respect to how the system actually works.

There is absolutely no reason to think post-stroke Fetterman will vote (or otherwise comport himself) in any way differently than pre-stroke Fetterman would have done. He'll toe the line and carry the Democrats' water, quite regardless of whether he is cognitively fine and only verbally impaired, or both cognitively and verbally impaired (in which case, his handlers and staff will do his thinking and deciding for him, to the same effect - just as Biden's handlers and staff do for Biden).

The people who promote slogans like "vote blue no matter who" have a better and more serious-minded grasp of political realities than those who are upset or offended at the idea that someone who is cognitively impaired could possibly have won such high office. However, now that Fetterman has been elected, the outraged sensibilities of the latter group can be exploited to foster an increased lack of respect for and deference to the U.S. Senate in particular and the U.S. government in general. In fact, that is why I was hoping (along with Michael Malice [1]) that Fetterman would win.
