Looking for feedback/ideas.
My brother is retired military (20+ yrs army). He and his wife (also army for 5 yrs) were stationed in Italy when their 2nd son was born. He was born on base, but they made them register the infant off base.
Fast forward to retirement and now in NH. However, when their son was in high school, they were told that he was an Italian citizen and was denied US citizenship. They've been trying for years without success to get this fixed. He cannot even apply for certain things like jobs because he cannot get an ID card since he does not have US citizenship. His parents wrote to Jean Shaheen about this and they say they are "looking into it."
The guy is about 30 yrs old now, so I think he was born a long time before they made the "new" rule that parents serving overseas had to go through a process to get their kid US citizenship before the 18th birthday. (I think they made that rule up around 2019!)
Has anybody dealt with this or have info on how to rectify this situation?
