CNN is reporting that Putin "could be" looking to carve Ukraine in two.

Wow CNN, what could possibly give you that idea ?

    Brilliant reporting...

Just for contrast... this is how Ukrainian PoW's are treated by the Russian military. Note the distinct lack of torture going on.

If Zelensky is finally accepting that the Donbass will no longer be part of Ukraine, this war may be over soon.

It is amazing how a country like Russia that has the military might they do is doing so terribly in the Ukraine Conflict. Their commander must be a total idiot.

Russia is not doing terribly. Not at all. It is going slowly, for sure, but that is due to the methodical approach the Russians are taking.

Russia is trying to protect people & property as much as they can. And they are doing it by the book, with a high amount of professionalism. They know that the world is watching them. They also know that the west is already lying about them.

So they are being careful. Which takes time. But they have consistently been gaining ground during this operation. Just very slowly.

All of this is made difficult, with the Azov/Ukraine using civilians as human shields, refusing to let them leave the basements of the buildings of their operation.

As far as I can tell, there is no war in Ukraine. The Russians have been clear since the beginning that this is not a war, it is a military action they are taking and part of the operation extends into Ukraine. Look at this map:

Have you ever watched any of those Vice documentaries set in Ukraine? That country is a gigantic field of mud criss-crossed by a few barely developed or undeveloped roads. Eastern Ukraine is not the place that any reporter in their right mind would want to be right now. So, who is observing the "front line positions" of the Russians?? Look at the detail on that map! It's apparently accurate down to the kilometer or even better. In reality, the Ukrainians themselves would have no idea where the Russians are, it's not like Russia would be mounting flags and flashing beacons on its equipment so the Ukrainians could sight it. In other words, the "map" above is a purely fictional work of art that somebody just "imagined" and drew.

The question that nobody ever asks is why would Russia even bother with a ground campaign when they have air superiority? Sure, Javelins exist, and the Russians might even take some air casualties but Russians are not like us fragile Americans who believe we can magically win an entire war theater with effectively zero casualities... it is part of Russian DNA to understand that war can only be paid in blood. Well-placed Russian helicopter nests would be able to establish complete air superiority over the Donbass within 24 hours or less, which leads me to believe that the idea that the Ukrainians have mounted any armed resistance against Russia in that region is just a wholly fabricated NATO propaganda fantasy.

Russia does not need to establish military control of Ukraine and, based on what they have stated publicly, that does not appear to be their aim. They may be providing armored support to Donbass resistance and this may result in a secession of the Donbass region from Kiev, we just don't know. But it's hard to see how Russia's political interests in Ukraine benefit from outright military control. Besides the NATO $#@!storm it's causing (and Russia hates $#@!storms), it just doesn't make strategic sense. Part of the reason the USSR was unstable was that it was militarily over-extended. Say what you like about Putin's Russia, one consistent pattern is that they have avoided repeating the mistakes of the USSR. So, I just don't believe the claims that Russia is trying to take over Kiev militarily, or even wants to. Russia wants Kiev to not be a pain in its own ass. That's what Russia really wants.

I've been impressed with some of Russia's floating bridges they deploy. Impressive engineering. Wouldn't be surprised if Russia is better equipped to move tanks across this kind of terrain than even the US.

Well of course they are, it's their home turf. Russia's terrain is just as treacherous, especially up in the north where they get the seasonal snow melt and the entire region turns into a swampy grass field. It's no coincidence that the Sherp was designed in Russia, they've been building that kind of specialized, bog-terrain equipment since the Soviet era.

But there are no journos running around Eastern Ukraine in Land Rovers sighting "Russian front lines" down to the kilometer. It makes no sense. Kiev can't track it, either. Even our magic spy satellites wouldn't be able to pick up the exact locations of the Russians. Satellites are cool but you already have to have some idea of where to look, it's not like the satellite can just take a snapshot of an entire country down to the resolution of every human in it and automatically identify all the locations of all those people. "Yeah, but they do it in the movies!" People...

Go read the speech Putin gave before the Russians crossed the border. They have done exactly what they said they would.

60% of people think Russia is just some evil occupying force invading poor Ukraine

39% of people think Russia is just reacting to the eastward expansion of NATO

Only like 1% of people know what this war is really about.

And here's a hint: If you think Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 because they were worried about NATO, you have no $#@!in clue what's going on.

And which of the factors that Scott Horton listed were not factors at all, and had no bearing on the actions of Putin?

"No bearing" is a matter of relevance. Gravity affects everything that we do, but it is not the reason why I have a broken coffee cup on the floor. I have a broken coffee cup on the floor because I accidentally pushed it off my desk while laughing at Scott Horton's tweet.

Of the reasons he listed, the below has literally zero relevance regardless of how generous you are with the word relevant:

    - dual-use missile launchers in Poland

The below has near zero relevance:

    - navy ships in the Black and Baltic seas, and repeated bomber flights at their borders.

The below is getting a little bit closer:

    - billions of dollars of weapons poured into Ukraine

The below WOULD be accurate if he wasn't implying color revolutions in other countries outside of Ukraine had anything to do with it:

    - a dozen color revolutions against Russia’s friends and neighbors,

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me make a few points below that are actually of relevance:

    - Putin has always considered the Donbass to be Russian (in ethnicity & culture) and has always wanted to re-integrate them with Russia
    - Western intervention led to a 2014 violent fascist coup
    - This violent fascist coup was planning to take over Crimea
    - Putin intervened to protect the Russians in Crimea (and to protect Russian interests by holding & keeping Crimea territory)
    - The Minsk agreement was made in regards to Donbass
    - Over the past 8 years the Minsk agreement has been broken (anti-Russian laws, shelling on Donbass, general genocide)
    - The fascist nazi's were planning to take over the Donbass
    - Putin intervened to protect the Russians in Donbass (and to protect Russian interests by holding & keeping Donbass territory)

All of the above are direct causes of the war.

How many times did I use the word "Poland"? Or even "NATO"?
