Thread: It's a cold, cold, quiet night here alone

Exclamation It's a cold, cold, quiet night here alone

Up late, all by myself, keeping watch on the fire and babysitting an oil burner that I've been having issues with.

Ten below zero by the desktop weather station.

Think I've got the oil burner issues licked, it's cycling properly now.

I normally only use wood, the oil burner provides DHW mostly, but on bitter cold nights, it supplements the wood stove and keeps a baseline temp of about 55 in the house.

Was just outside getting a good lungful of cold air and admiring the moon on the snow.

On nights like this you can imagine the whole world is asleep and at peace.

I'm glad to have this little community of refuseniks to talk to.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to anybody I may have missed in the holiday rush.

Another mark of a tyrant is that he likes foreigners better than citizens, and lives with them and invites them to his table; for the one are enemies, but the Others enter into no rivalry with him. - Aristotle's Politics Book 5 Part 11

It is cold and snowing where I am too.I have electric heat this year. I just did not want to be out chopping wood sitting up late tending the fire on cold nights. I have the heat set on 60 and am wearing a jacket and warm socks.

Snow coming in this morning here. Currently 23 with real-feel at 13. Gas furnace + radiators for this type of weather (electric when it's warmer). I'll burn some wood in the fireplace later just because. I'd post a Roanoke snow scene but it'd just be cars in ditches. Not quite as serene as AF's pic.

Got to reconnect with some refuseniks yesterday afternoon at a memorial for "one of us" -- I even wore a 2008 RP shirt. I ran into a guy I hadn't seen in probably 8 years? We're going to grab a beer next weekend. Cheers, everyone!

Well, we finally have our first "winter event" here in the N.C. Piedmont. I was up at 5am to light the fire. 22 degrees and falling snow. Beautiful and peaceful from the back porch. Upper level warming may lead to sleet/freezing rain later in day. The ole clawfoot bathtub is filled with water in case of a power outage.

I woke up with 7 inches of snow on the back porch. It's still coming down. I still have kids in the house so I will be acting like a kid outside today.

Thanks Phill for the reminder to fill the tub. We get power outages too easily up here.

A layer of snow is infrequent enough here that I forget how snow helps a full moon light up the night.

You're welcome. Hope it's not needed, but there is always the possibility when there is ice in the mix.

I actually like the power outages in the snow. I don't have to go to work if I am snowed in. Cooking over the wood on the fireplace. Ginding coffee in the flour mill etc. It's a fun adventure. The only hardship is listening to the wife complain incessantly.

Yup. The same here. It's nice to have electronics down. Break out the lamps, whiskey and playing cards.

It's all about taking action and not being lazy. So you do the work, whether it's fitness or whatever. It's about getting up, motivating yourself and just doing it.

We tend to wonder: "how did people survive before the invention of the -blank-"

That's one of the reasons I was just standing out in my woods on a bitter cold winter's night last night.

Moore wasn't kidding when he wrote this -

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below

A bright moon on new snow on a cold, cold night lights up like the day.

It's more than enough to hike, or walk or drive a team of horses to without any artificial lighting at all.

It's funny how, the colder it gets, the more pronounced the effect is.

I think it was John Muir, but years ago I read about a mountaineer who got snowed in near the top of a summit. He and is companions were sure that they would die of the severe cold. Despite this awareness, John Muir wrote that he couldn't help but be overwhelmed by the beauty of the stars in the night's sky.

Sat by the woodburner in the workshop tonight. Smoking cigars, sipping bourbon and watching Big Ben's last game, while 4 or 5 inches of fresh powder fell on the icy lake. Today was the first day for the ice fishers. Tomorrow will be the first day for snowmobiles and ATV's to take over. And the forecast is looking good for this to hang on for awhile.

Regardless of what crazy things happen in this weird outside pretend world, it's nice to have a strong connection to the real world around us.

It's also comforting to know that there are people out there all over the place who understand how precious it is to live in reality and breathe free.

Stay warm and know that you are not alone.
