    These are big words.

    Wendy Sherman:

"The US will not allow anyone to close the door to NATO to any country

U.S.is ready to impose sanctions against key financial institutions, tighten export controls, support its allies."

    Sergei Ryabkov:

"in the near future somewhere in Europe, it may require some kind of military response from Russia."

"or we will regret to state that the NATO group considered it right to reject our initiative. Then the situation will look different."

Americans are a non-serious people “playing with fire”

    Paul Craig Roberts

The Americans, wallowing in hubris and delusions of omnipotence, have blown the meeting with the Russians, as I expected them to do.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister Sergey Ryabkov expressed the Kremlin’s loss of patience:

“We do not trust the other side. It’s over, enough is enough.” The Americans “underestimate the gravity of the situation,” and failed to show an understanding of how key issues need to be resolved. “We are fed up with loose talk, half-promises, misrepresentations. It is absolutely mandatory to make sure that Ukraine never ever becomes a member of NATO.”
Ryabkov said he will make a decision on January 13 whether to continue the meeting.
    https://www.rt.com/russia/545616-rya...va-talks-nato/

Ryabkov said if the militarization of Russia’s border by Washington did not cease, the Russian military will respond in a way that “will inevitably and unavoidably damage the security of the US and its European allies.” “We are calling on the US to demonstrate a maximum of responsibility at this moment. Risks related to a possible increase of confrontation should not be underestimated,” Ryabkov said, adding that “significant” effort has been made to persuade the Americans that “playing with fire” is not in their interests.

The insouciant State Department replied that NATO won’t stop expanding.

Paul Craig Roberts says Russia is going to roll back NATO to re-1997 borders.
So, that's 14 countries to neutralise, plus Ukraine and Georgia.

    Talks end tomorrow.

October of 1962 springs to mind, even if Joe Biden is almost twice as old as JFK was at the time.

  17. #44
JFK at the time was letting himself be pulled into a limited nuclear war or exchange.
The reason why we did not end up inside a nuclear war is that a wise old man was
running things inside the USSR. He wanted a much nicer world for his grandchildren.

October of 1962 could have been quite different. The OP has a intense degree of hyperbole to it. It is a tad alarmist if
you just read the topic header. I indeed felt impelled to say this. I hope there is no war in Europe this year, this decade.

Talks have ended. Only a higher degree of bitterness and disagreement occurred.

Now What? Putin will make that decision by the weekend, IMO.

With all the domestic insanity we're understandably focused on, it's easy to neglect what's happening in foreign policy -- Ukraine and Kazakhstan seem so remote to us, after all. But the lizard people could be cooking up a real disaster here, and we need to know what's going on.

What do you call a false-flag false flag?

(Damn, it's getting all meta up in here ...)

Biden Admin Says Russia Is Going To Carry Out A False Flag Attack On Itself To Justify Invading Ukraine
“We have information that they’ve pre-positioned a group of operatives, to conduct what we call a false flag operation”
    https://summit.news/2022/01/17/video...ading-ukraine/
    Steve Watson (17 January 2022)

The Biden administration announced Friday that it believes Russia will conduct a false flag attack and blame Ukraine as a pretext for invading the country.

Both Pentagon press secretary John Kirby and White House press secretary Jen Psaki made the announcement.

“Without getting into too much detail, we do have information that indicates that Russia is already working actively to create a pretext for a potential invasion, for a move on Ukraine,” Kirby stated.

He added, “In fact, we have information that they’ve pre-positioned a group of operatives, to conduct what we call a false flag operation, an operation designed to look like an attack on them or their people, or Russian speaking people in Ukraine, as an excuse to go in.”

Psaki repeated the claim, noting “As part of its plans, Russia is laying the groundwork to have the option of fabricating a pretext for invasion.”

She added, “We have information that indicates Russia has already pre-positioned a group of operatives to conduct a false flag operation in eastern Ukraine.”

So false flag operations do exist and are acknowledged as something other than deranged conspiracy theories when it suits the administration.
