DELTA raising health insurance premiums for unvaccinated employees...

    Key Points

    • Starting Nov. 1, unvaccinated Delta employees who have health insurance from the company will face $200 monthly surcharges.
    • From Sept. 12, unvaccinated employees will have to take a Covid test every week, while “community case rates” are high.
    • United Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines say they will mandate vaccines for employees.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian notified employees Wednesday that they will face $200 monthly increases on their health insurance premiums starting Nov. 1 if they aren’t vaccinated against Covid-19, citing steep costs to cover employees who are hospitalized with the virus.
Unvaccinated employees will face other restrictions, including indoor masking effective immediately and weekly Covid-19 tests starting Sept. 12, the Atlanta-based airline said in announcing new Covid policies for employees.
The measures are the latest attempt by a U.S. corporation to drive up Covid vaccination rates. Delta stopped short of an outright mandate like rival United Airlines established earlier this month. Delta, which self-insures its employees, stands out in its plans to raise premiums for unvaccinated workers to cover the higher costs of insuring employees who get Covid.
“The average hospital stay for COVID-19 has cost Delta $50,000 per person,” Bastian said in an employee memo. “This surcharge will be necessary to address the financial risk the decision to not vaccinate is creating for our company. In recent weeks since the rise of the B.1.617.2 variant, all Delta employees who have been hospitalized with COVID were not fully vaccinated.”
Incidentally, they seem to be flip-flopping on the covid variant nomenclature and are going back from "the variant" to using older WHO given name "B.1.617.2 variant "

Delta Air Lines refuses to use the name of the delta variant: 'We just call it the variant"

The best solution is for them to mind their own business. Having said that, I would prefer my employer to do this as their top restriction versus a mandate. I would just opt out of their program.

I don't have health insurance and never will. I do the accounting and it's a bad buy.

I think insurance is a waste. It mostly preys on fears and insecurity.

Delta Air Lines’ $200 per month experiment for changing unvaccinated employees’ minds seems to be working

Americans infamously vote with their wallets. Turns out, they may get vaccinated against Covid with their wallets, too.
In the two weeks since Delta Air Lines announced a $200 monthly health insurance surcharge for unvaccinated employees, 20% of Delta’s unvaccinated employees have already gotten the jab, Dr. Henry Ting, Delta’s chief health officer, said in an Infectious Disease Society of America briefing Thursday. “I think [that’s] a huge number in terms of shifting that group that’s most reluctant,” he said.
Of the airline’s 80,000 employees, 20,000 still remain unvaccinated, added Ting, who is also an adjunct professor of medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine, and a professor emeritus at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine.

The surcharge was first announced on Aug. 25, and will go into effect on Nov. 1. It’s meant to help motivate people to get the Covid vaccine and “address the financial risk” that comes with choosing not to get vaccinated, Delta CEO Ed Bastian wrote in the employee memo announcing the move. The airline calculated that the average medical cost associated with a hospital stay for Covid-19 cost the company $50,000 per person.
Such a vaccination surge among Delta’s ranks is somewhat surprising: Recent surveys have shown that paying people to get vaccinated isn’t enough to sway those who are strongly opposed to getting the vaccine. But the airline’s negative financial incentive has clearly resonated.
The announcement boosted Delta’s vaccination rate from 74% to 78% in just two weeks, according to Ting, who noted that the airline’s current unvaccinated population represents a cohort of people who are “the most reluctant amongst any group, nationally or at Delta Air Lines.” Those individuals are on the fence, have questions and want to do more research to make a decision on their own timeline, he said.

Or those employees just told the company they are.

Serious question, why aren't people simply providing fake vaxx cards?

How could such a high quality document that's just printed on card stock and filled in by hand be faked? I for one am offended by such an idea as defrauding a document from a private corporation that pretends to be part of the government. Now excuse me while I go for a boat ride with my firearms, ammo and precious metals on my person.

Maybe raising rates on the control group in anticipation of some pretty significant expenditures on another group, who maybe won't be able to work...
