Ron DeSantis Questions COVID Vaccine Messaging – If You Get a Vaccine But Still Have to Social Distance, Wear a Mask and Isolate Then What’s The Purpose of a Vaccine

    April 16, 2021

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis asks the obvious question today during a press conference in Lakeland, Florida. When asked a question about COVID vaccine delivery the governor said “the messaging is terrible.” Adding, “you’re telling people to get a vaccine and yet people that have been vaccinated for months are wearing masks” …”I can’t square if the vaccine is effective, then why are people wearing masks?”

Additionally, “If you get a vaccine, and the vaccine is effective, your immune; and so act immune.” “If you tell people the opposite then, gee, why if it’s not effective for them, and it doesn’t change anything for them, then why go through it?” The common sense remarks about the issue begin at 14:50 of the video below:

He has a good and valid point, but there is a hypothesis for the mask recommendation after vaccination (i.e. potential but not proven with respect to COVID and the COVID vaccine).

For example, with the current pertussis vaccine, which is a bacterial infection, not viral like COVID, a person can become a carrier of pertussis when exposed to pertussis for up to two weeks. They will never get any symptoms, which is the point of the vaccine. The vaccinated person is protected, but they can be a spreader.

There is the potential with a viral disease like COVID, for a vaccinated person to be exposed, and spread for some period of time. This is unproven though with regard to COVID and it’s vaccine, but the possibility is there. Think of it this way. A vaccinated person has antibodies in their bloodstream, but the potential is there for a vaccinated person to inhale the COVID virus, and possibly replicate it a bit, before the antibodies in the blood can get to it.

From a practical standpoint in the real world, the risk of the disease itself does not justify mandates at this point, let alone rare hypothetical secondary concerns. Paranoia and fear should not rule us. If an unvaccinated person or person who has never had COVID is that fearful, they can stay at home, or only go out with an N95 mask. There is no justification for government mandates.
