A Virginia public school official named 2019 National Teacher of the Year apologized Thursday after he praised the neighbor who brutally assaulted Sen. Rand Paul and called for the same treatment of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
“Who are Mitch McConnell’s neighbors?” Rodney Robinson, a senior adviser at Richmond Public Schools, tweeted Wednesday afternoon, WRIC reported. “I’m just saying Rand Paul’s neighbor did what a true Kentucky hero should do. It’s your turn to step up.”
Sen. Rand Paul was brutally attacked by his neighbor while mowing the lawn at his Kentucky home in 2017. He suffered complications during his recovery from the attack, including battling pneumonia, and part of his lung had to be removed last year.
“I am so disgusted by this I have no words,” Kelley Paul, Mr. Paul’s wife, responded in a tweet shared by the senator. “The 2019 ‘National Teacher Of The Year’ is celebrating the violent assault on my husband that resulted in 6 broken ribs and part of his lung being removed. This hateful thug is calling for more violence on Sen McConnell.”
Mr. Robinson later apologized for making a “bad joke” and said he intended to “look in the mirror” to reflect on his behavior. He has since set his Twitter account to private.
