900 Billion Dollar X-mas present

Misleading title in the NYT that this is somehow "only" a $900 billion dollar deal. When in reality, its another $2.3 Trillion. Merry X-Mass.

Congress Strikes Long-Sought Stimulus Deal to Provide $900 Billion in Aid
Leaders said they had an agreement on a pandemic aid plan including payments to Americans, jobless benefits and funds for businesses and vaccine distribution, but the timing of final votes was unclear.

WASHINGTON — Congressional leaders reached agreement on Sunday on a $900 billion stimulus package that would provide direct payments and jobless aid to struggling Americans and badly needed funds for small businesses, hospitals, schools and vaccine distribution, overcoming months of stalemate on a measure intended to bolster the pandemic-battered economy.

Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, announced the agreement on Sunday evening on the Senate floor, declaring, “We can finally report what our nation has needed to hear for a very long time: More help is on the way.”

The agreement, struck after a renewed flurry of talks broke a partisan logjam that had persisted since the summer, came hours before the federal government was set to run out of funds. Once drafted, it was expected to be merged with a sweeping catchall spending measure that would keep the government funded for the remainder of the fiscal year, creating a $2.3 trillion behemoth whose passage will be Congress’s last major act before adjourning for the year.

At which point will Americans realize that creating an unaccountable institution that is able to pass its liability on to tax-payers is immoral and attracts sociopaths?

The eviction moratorium is likely to end with forgiveness of the unpaid rents, because the alternative (evicting millions of people for not being able to come up with a year's rent all at once) is likely to be politically impossible. I think something similar may happen with student loans. You all are in determent, no? If you weren't making your payments, how does that work (according to current rules) going forward? Will it just add to the principal, or will you have to come up with a lump sum at some point?

So, all renters not paying for the last year could be evicted and the landlord still gets zero. The renter then moves on to another place.

I expect that the feds will pay the landlords the back rent, or part of it, so that people aren't evicted in the first place.

Over time, the federal government will become the de facto landlord, as now with HUD.

Among other tragic consequences, such a system precludes the writing of such songs as:

Not to mention utility bills. There are scores of people who have not paid a utility bill in 11 months. Some even longer. And there's a moratorium on shut-offs.

Eventually, that will be charged to everyone.

Well, at least this will encourage better behavior in the future.

...as opposed to, you know, teaching people that their delinquency has no consequences and they can rely on father-state for everything.

Oh no. I mean it will be charged to "everyone". Meaning, that the rest of the population will be paying for those who didn't pay. Either through taxes or the future utility bills of those who pay.
