The conflict is the latest eruption of violence in a decades-long dispute over the region, which lies within the borders of Azerbaijan but is controlled by ethnic Armenian forces. Both countries have reported military and civilian deaths as of Sunday afternoon.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose nation shares a border with Armenia, reinforced his country's support for longtime ally Azerbaijan in a series of tweets, in which he called Armenia "the biggest threat to peace and tranquility in the region."

Azerbaijan, Armenia declare martial law after clashes kill at least 16 military members

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world...?ocid=msedgntp

The two countries, both former Soviet republics, experienced their heaviest clash since 2016 on Sunday over Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed territory that is inside Azerbaijan but run by ethnic Armenians, Reuters reported.

Armenia accused Azerbaijan of an air and artillery strike on the area, with Nagorno-Karabakh saying 16 of its military members were killed and more than 100 were wounded in the attack. Armenian activists also said an ethnic Armenian woman and child were killed.

Armenia also said Azeri troops attacked civilian targets, prompting Armenia to vow for a "proportionate response."

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan tweeted the decision for Armenia to declare martial law after the strike.

They appear to be on the verge of all out war, real war, like we haven't seen for decades.

Neither little state has nuclear weapons, so they have to fight a real war.

Tanks have been blown up, soldiers have been killed.

    Armenia is beginning total mobilization.

Despite disagreements, Russia, at the end of the day, will support the Armenians against the Turks.

Even after a century of bolshevism, the Russians haven't forgotten their obligations with respect to Middle Eastern Christians.

    Great a historical ethnic war.

    https://www.npr.org/2020/09/28/91782...full-blown-war

A simmering conflict on Russia's volatile southern border is threatening to escalate into an all-out war, with the potential of drawing in NATO ally Turkey.

Fighting continued for a second day in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, claimed by Armenians as well as by Azerbaijanis. Dozens of service members on both sides have been reported killed in a flare-up of violence that began Sunday morning. The ethnic Armenian majority in the region fought a bloody war of secession from Azerbaijan as the Soviet Union fell apart three decades ago. A tense cease-fire — but no lasting peace — has since kept tensions high in the Caucasus, an area where Russia, Turkey and Iran have historically competed.

International mediation is formally in the hands of a group co-chaired by France, Russia and the United States. Russia, the dominant power in the region for 200 years, carries the most clout. It has a defense pact with Armenia and a military base in the landlocked country, but the Kremlin also maintains good relations with Azerbaijan. Turkey's relations with Armenia are clouded by the Ottoman Empire's 1915 mass killing of Armenians, which many historians have described as genocide. Turks and Azeris share ethnic kinship, and ties between Turkey and Armenia have been frozen because of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Seems NATO can't control its members very well, much like the UN.

The president of the contested Nagorno-Karabakh region warned citizens in large cities of Azerbaijan Sunday to leave to avoid "inevitable loss" after he said Azerbaijan targeted civilians in the region's main city of Stepanakert the last couple of days.

Azerbaijan's assault against Armenia threatens Democracy everywhere

Azerbaijan and Turkey have been working strategically to influence international public opinion, especially the United States, Israel and Europe. Azerbaijan's nefarious foreign dealings were recently exposed by an Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) investigation into the "Azerbaijani laundromat," an extensive money laundering operation that saw Azerbaijan funnel over $2.9 billion dollars between 2012 and 2014 alone into foreign shell corporations to buy favor among international institutions, politicians, lobbyists and journalists. UNESCO and the European Parliament were extensively targeted, and recent reports have surfaced from Israel of the transfer of a significant amount of funds from the state-owned Israeli Aerospace Industries to a laundromat-linked account after a $5 billion contract was signed between the two.
