Pentagon sending troops to Syria after clashes between U.S., Russian military

Sept. 18, 2020, 12:38 PM PDT by Courtney Kube

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is deploying a small number of U.S. troops to Syria after a series of escalating encounters between the U.S. and Russian militaries, according to three U.S. defense officials.

The troops and vehicles will serve as a show of presence to discourage the Russian military from crossing into the eastern security area where U.S., coalition, and Syrian Democratic Forces operate, the officials said.

The additional troops will include six Bradley Fighting Vehicles and fewer than 100 soldiers operating in northeast Syria on a 90-day deployment.

A U.S. official said, "These actions and reinforcements are a clear signal to Russia to adhere to mutual de-confliction processes and for Russia and other parties to avoid unprofessional, unsafe and provocative actions in northeast Syria."

While U.S. military and Russian forces have come in contact at checkpoints and along highway M4 in Syria throughout 2020, on Aug. 17 U.S. and Syrian Democratic Forces came under small arms fire after passing through a checkpoint near Tal al-Zahab, Syria. The U.S. and SDF had permission from the pro-Syrian regime forces manning the checkpoint, but then began to take fire from unidentified forces nearby. The U.S. and SDF returned fire and did not suffer any casualties. U.S. officials said the small arms fire likely came from Syrian and Russian forces... How long are you going to carry on with this? your best chance is for Trump to be defeated in a sham election, that way you can say that he would have withdrawn all the troops had he not been cheated in Nov.

    We are leaving Syria.

Nope. Insanity continues. We are stopping Kurds from dealing with Assad,
Which they have to do going forward

Don't forget Russia and ISIS (or whoever the anti-Assad flavor of the week is now). It's like a 6-contender battle royale.

I bet the Clintons nominated the DoD head who manages all those neocons. We can never win even the war stuff even after we nominated a commander in chief. Democracy dies in darkness

Rafael "Ted" Cruz pushes for Syria military intervention
“We know Assad has used these weapons, and there is good reason to suspect the al Qaida-affiliated rebels would use them as well if they could get their hands on them. This poses an intolerable threat not only to our friends in the region, but also to the United States. We need to be developing a clear, practical plan to go in, locate the weapons, secure or destroy them, and then get out. The United States should be firmly in the lead to make sure the job is done right.”- Rafael Cruz

Um, I just wanted to point out how much sense this makes:
Pentagon sending troops to Syria after clashes between U.S., Russian military

Because, you know, if you wanted to stop clashes between militaries, you would obviously just send more military, right?

I think this works in every war.

  27. #24
FWIW, this sounds like a cover story for sending more troops to eliminate a pocket of resistance from natives that they didn't expect. Russia is the cover boogeyman. Remember, military lies about everything as a matter of business.

Perhaps Dick Cheney's Iraq war execution right hand man Scooter Libby, who was recently pardoned by GOPA leader, should also be brought in. They were experts in 'quick wars'.

I don't see any named US defense department officials, why are they anonymous?

Is this another one of those "trump is gonna..." threads, based on anonymous sources?

None of the Syrian Civil War sources I am following confirm this. Tons of rumors in Syria every day, and I am not even seeing confirmation this rumor exists. As for now, this is just a giant empty story to bullhorn "Russia bad mmmkay" again.

Also, the US-Russian conflicts have been tiny, at best. Nobody has even been wounded. there have been a couple of arguments at check points and attempts to block vehicles.
