James Mattis Calls Trump Threat to Constitution, Compares to Nazi, Based on Lafayette Park

I'm no fan of Mattis, and I am certainly no fan of The Atlantic.

But I also do not belong to the religious Trump Cult, so that is why I am posting this.

    PRO LIBERTY!!!

James Mattis Calls Trump Threat to Constitution, Compares to Nazi, Based on Lafayette Park

Former Secretary of Defense James Mattis published an attack on President Donald Trump on Wednesday, accusing the president of violating the Constitution in clearing Lafayette Park on Monday and using the military to quell riots.

In an extraordinary statement, published in The Atlantic, Mattis calls the rioters and looters a “small number of lawbreakers” among “tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values.”

He also compares President Trump to a Nazi, saying Trump’s policies resemble “[t]he Nazi slogan for destroying us.”
He does not call for any specific action, but suggests the president should be “reject[ed].”

    Mattis declares:

When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.

At home, we should use our military only when requested to do so, on very rare occasions, by state governors. Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict—a false conflict—between the military and civilian society.

Instructions given by the military departments to our troops before the Normandy invasion reminded soldiers that “The Nazi slogan for destroying us…was ‘Divide and Conquer.’ Our American answer is ‘In Union there is Strength.’” We must summon that unity to surmount this crisis—confident that we are better than our politics.

We know that we are better than the abuse of executive authority that we witnessed in Lafayette Square. We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution. At the same time, we must remember Lincoln’s “better angels,” and listen to them, as we work to unite.

Of course! That's what the military is for (in his view). Not to waste patrolling the streets of American cities. They are warriors trained to kill, not to police.

Not only that, he wanted to put very harsh sanctions on Iran to please our closest allies in mideast.
As soon as Trump found out about that, he was let go and non-interventionist, pro-peace folks were brought in to be surrounded-with. Anyone can make a blunder but a genius corrects mistakes quickly.

He had also said some very shocking things about our closest ally in mideast and homeland of one of Trump's richest top donors:

Top U.S. General: We Pay a Price for Backing Israel

Marine Corps General James Mattis, who retired May 22 as chief of the U.S. Central Command, in charge of U.S. forces in the Middle East, said in a speech at the prestigious Aspen Security Forum in Colorado last Saturday (July 20) that America needs to work “with a sense of urgency” to achieve a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, because resentment of U.S. support for Israel hurts America militarily throughout the region.

He said the “current situation is unsustainable” and that America must act “with a sense of urgency” toward a two-state solution, because the chances “are starting to ebb because of the settlements and where they’re at.” If it fails, he said, the result will be “apartheid.” And then this bombshell:
I paid a military-security price every day as the commander of CentCom because the Americans were seen as biased in support of Israel.
Mattis’ predecessor as chief of CentCom, General David Petraeus, made much the same point in a briefing paper he submitted to the Senate Armed Services Committee in March 2010, shortly before he handed CentCom over to Mattis. The passage on Israel (on Page 12) caused an explosive reaction (here is what the ADL had to say), though his actual testimony was far more equivocal than his written report.

I’m not in favor of the military invading or occupying Iran. But I’m sure as hell not in favor of the military invading or occupying Los Angeles!

Pretty sure he didn't need a Congressional declaration of war for that either, just like "staying in Syria".
