Employers Struggle to Compete with $600 Coronavirus Unemployment Payments

    Some conservatives were predicting this:

As a producer of personal protective equipment, Carl Livesay was eager to rehire his 60 employees and get operations up and running at the Baltimore-based manufacturer Maryland Thermoform Corporation once its forgivable government loan came through.

But with some workers earning more staying home because of the enhanced unemployment benefits provided by the CARES Act, the company has struggled to restore its headcount -- putting it at risk of violating the terms of its stimulus loan through the Paycheck Protection Program, which calls for employers to retain three-quarters of their payroll.

"It's been very difficult to get some people to return to work," Livesay, the vice president of operations for Maryland Thermoform Corporation, told ABC News. "In some cases, depending on what their compensation was, they make more money with unemployment and the federal stipend of $600 a week."

"There are significant unintended consequences," Livesay, who is also advising Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on reopening the state's economy, said of PPP. "I'm hoping that they give us some extra time to get up to full staff. We're interviewing three to five people a day for jobs we have open, and we can't even get them to show up for interviews."

This is why Trump said to give the stimulus out directly to people. The democrats created this situation. This really allows employers to get the best people imo. I wouldnt want to employ someone who would refuse good work anyways those usually arent the good workers.

Payments exceeding wages are insane, but even half wages is incentive enough for some people to continue to stay at home.

This should be a solved "problem" already. This is not new in the history of UI. If an employer lays someone off, and that person then claims UI, if the employer offers them their job back, that information should go straight to UI, which should immediately cease payments.

But each state is probably different, and the UI "requirements" are often a joke. They require a person to look for a job, but there is no way to enforce that. But an employer offering to rehire should be easy to track. Nothing new here.

This always happens with unemployment benefits. When you pay people not to work many people will chose not to work.

There was a decent argument for this to flatten to curve for few weeks but the House wants to keep this through the end of the year. And the Twitter left will scream about how heartless and stupid anyone who wants to cut these off is.

Leftists are the most economically illiterate people alive. Morons all of them.

All of this is temporary and by precise design.

No worries, once everything is in position and ready to go, life will resume in accordance to the new normal.

Unemployment typically would only go up a bit above minimum wage (another strong Libertarian talking point), but now it isnt just the people at the bottom getting laid off, there are a good number of people making well more than that.

What gets me is why the additional funds were not adjusted to match what the employee was earning while they were working? For example, Gross Pay of $2260 per month, why wouldnt that be adjusted so that is what Unemployment pays?

Unless, the real intent is to implement Cloward Piven strategy, where by a society is collapse by purposefully overloading its social support structures? Is that a reasonable question?

We need to fight fire with fire. The only way to do that is for America to fire up creativity. If there are jobs that pay more than not working and that arent $#@! jobs people will want to work. Maybe that just means jobs being created that pay more than non essential jobs. Who knows maybe there will be a boom somewhere that would need those workers to not be occupied in a job thats not really paying that much anyways. Maybe we could have a middle class again.

I heard that the reason for this was because it would take too long to process each unemployment claim. In Washington state for example, there are still many people who are stuck in adjudication waiting for unemployment checks.

I'm not sure why the $600 dollar checks had to be tied to unemployment. If we are going to have a stimulus program I think the checks should be given to everyone under a certain income limit. A lot of low wage workers would probably gladly work again if their income was being boosted.

I think if they did it by giving it to those under specific income limits, then dead cats and dogs would also be receiving the stimulus deals, and probably being registered Democrats at the same time... Just sayin...

It was the agreement. The government wrecked peoples careers and their industry by telling them to stay home. Most people wouldnt do that consentually so the government paid them to. There was talks at the time of a bonus or tax reduction for people who return to work. The Republicans pushed for direct payments through the IRS that would amount to a tax reduction. You cant just expect a bunch of people who you paid to stay home to go back to work for probably less money than when the lockdown started and tell them they should go hungry or work twice as much for the same amount

Do you think companies dont seek out ways to get tax breaks by essentially picking people who might not be the best available candidate? Even Joe Bidens VP pick is a diversity hire.

I think every company is different. Some pay for the best labor that money can buy, some choose the cheapest and others are somewhere in between.

Everyone that works watches how businesses are run. Being an independent contractor is nothing close to employing people.

This sounds like how UBI starts.

UBI starts with countries all over the world paying their population to stay home or quarantine because China released a deadly virus and then threatened to cut off medicines that millions of Americans depend on while importing face masks and exporting faulty and knock off face masks to other countries at a mark up? Face masks that fail any sort of efficacy tests are being used in hospitals around the world. I think its more than a power grab by the deep state.
