Rand makes 'deal' with the Devil

I hope its worth it because I believe Trump will sign anything the Senate passes into law

As part of the deal, the Senate will vote on amendments once it turns to the House legislation, including a proposal from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) to block FISA warrants from being used against Americans.

It is also expected to vote on an amendment from Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) that would bolster legal protections for individuals targeted for surveillance.

The deal comes after Paul and Lee and their allies were able to throw up procedural roadblocks to prevent the Senate from passing the House bill last week ahead of Sunday's deadline, forcing the intelligence programs to lapse.

Opponents of the House bill argue it does not go far enough to reform the surveillance courts, which have been subjected to growing scrutiny after Justice Department inspector general Michael Horowitz found 17 inaccuracies and omissions in the warrant applications targeting Trump campaign associate Carter Page.

"We applaud the many senators who refuse to cave to efforts to jam a weak surveillance bill through Congress without debate and amendments,” said American Civil Liberties Union senior legislative counsel Neema Singh Guliani in a statement. “The inadequate House bill must be amended to further reform the intelligence courts, limit large-scale collection of Americans’ information, and ensure the government complies with its constitutional obligations."

Rand deals with the devils all the time. He and Mitch have come a long way in a respectful relationship of mutual benefits. Mcconnell is up for re-election, he won't be going back on this guarantee.

Even if a shtty version passed without support of Rand, Lee and hopefully others, there is no doubt in my mind Trump would discuss it with Rand before signing or veto.

Trump’s tweet came two days after Sens. Mike Lee and Rand Paul tweeted their own displeasure with the House bill. The two senators threatened a filibuster—which would have eaten up time on the Senate floor needed to consider legislation passed by the House to address the coronavirus pandemic.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had scheduled a procedural vote on the House-passed bill for the evening of March 16, but at the last minute scrapped that vote after reaching a deal with Lee and Paul. According to Politico, the two agreed not to oppose the 77-day extension in return for guaranteed votes on a package of amendments when the bill is eventually taken uppresumably sometime before May 30. Lee had this to say: “We shouldn’t have to wait until the moment when we’re on the eve of the expiration of some important legislation and where we have to wait for the president of the United States to weigh in and lean in....From time to time, laws require revision and review and reform. That always necessarily requires amendments.”

Of course he will stick to the deal...

But the amendments will be voted down by the bipartisan crime syndicate.

Then Trump will sign the abomination into law.

At least we have more time to rally the troops.
