Paul, a strong gun-rights supporter, downplayed the necessity of additional firearm regulations as a way to tackle violence, however. He said he might be open to the idea of raising the penalties for those who sell firearms to minors, but that he doesn't favor more restrictions.

"My wife sleeps with a loaded gun next to her bed, she gets so many death threats," Paul said. "I had 200 death threats last week from people who hate me. What should I do, just say: 'I'm against gun ownership? The other people have guns and they're all buying them illegally; it doesn't mean that a good person is going to commit a crime because they own a gun."
