Bernie Sanders is not only back, he has the best shot at the nomination right now

    https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/20...5UP/story.html

    By James Pindell Globe Staff,December 13, 2019, 2:58 p.m.

Two months ago, it didnít look good for Bernie Sanders or his presidential campaign. He was at a Las Vegas-area hospital recovering from a heart attack. Polls in Iowa and New Hampshire showed him way back in third place among Democrats. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Warren, his rival for the progressive wing for the Democratic presidential electorate, was surging and, at the time, was leading the race.

To some, it felt like the beginning of the end of Sandersí six-year-long White House effort. The health scare, after all, offered him a chance to bow out of the race, save face, and use his clout to further push the field to the left.

But the terrible, no good, very bad moment for Sanders ended up being just a blip.

With approximately 50 days before the Iowa caucuses, Sanders is not only back, but he has the cleanest shot at the 2020 Democratic nomination.

In Iowa, he is in a close second place behind South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg. He has reclaimed the lead in New Hampshire. And in Nevada, he is second, behind former vice president Joe Biden, according to the Real Clear Politics poll averages in those states. No one else can argue they are in the mix to win the first three nomination contests of Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada like Sanders. Big wins in those contests would make challenging him in other states insurmountable, if history is any guide.

Whatís especially interesting about Sanders is his hardcore base of supporters.

Poll after poll shows that a majority of likely Democratic presidential primary voters are still making up their mind on who they will support, even if they are leaning toward someone at the moment.

This means that a onetime supporter of Kamala Harris may later back Warren, and those who backed Biden may now be with Buttigieg.

But Sanders people are Sanders people.

In the most recent Suffolk University/Boston Globe poll of likely New Hampshire Democratic primary voters, released in late November, found that 64 percent of Sanders voters said their minds are firmly made up to support him.

Compare that with the 37 percent of Biden supporters, 36 percent of Warren supporters, and 30 percent of Buttigieg supporters who said they fully backed their candidate.

With such a base of support and such a large field, Sanders was always going to be a factor of some kind.

Plus, Sanders is getting a lot of progressive energy. Three members of the Squad of first-term House Democrats have endorsed him, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. In addition, in recent weeks he has begun to rack up labor union endorsements at a clip faster than his rivals.

Where Sanders goes from here is unclear. But he has the biggest base of supporters of anyone who is not open to looking at anyone else. He is expected to, once again, lead the field in fund-raising at the end of the month. And he has real progressive energy behind him.

What a difference two months makes.

He won't get it, the DNC will see to that.
Hitlery will take it at a brokered convention.

In 2016, there was a fair chance Bernie could've won against Trump but in 2020, Breadline Bernie has no shot. Trump has a good economic record to stand on while he can draw a clear contrast to Bernie's America. Working Americans won't want to take that type of gamble simply because Trump makes childish tweets.

I'm sure Bernie will still get screwed out of the nomination some how, whether it be by Biden or Hillary.

No. Look at that list of 48 names, and tell me which one you heard of before they committed suicide in an incredibly acrobatic manner.

The Clintons got where they are by being ruthless, not stupid. They don't off anyone popular enough to become a martyr.

What about a brokered convention by running a bunch of candidates that are just running just to take support from Sanders and then the ayes have it at the convention...Clinton gets nominated and Sanders tells his supporters to deal with reality and endorses the democratic nominee?

Just to run against her buddy Trump again, and get beaten by him again?

If you were going to go to that much trouble, why wouldn't you wait until 2024 when there's no incumbent? And in 2024, why would you do all that when (as we learned in 2016) you own all the superdelegates?

Pride. She still believes she should have won and so do her supporters. They would try incredibly harder to get her elected if given a do over

So she's going to get her pride doubly hurt by running against an incumbent?

Is that why she didn't even enter the race?

Would Bloomberg have jumped in and started spending billions on ads if Clinton had plans to steal the nomination? You think New York Mayor Bloomberg and New York Senator Clinton never talk?

My crystal ball says no way in hell. The Clintons are not stupid.

And all of this assumes she hasn't changed her mind about wanting the job.

Lets hope Bernie gets the nomination. There are so many similarities to the defeated Corybn. Both septuagenarian socialists who will be roundly rejected.

Well how did she campaign last time?? She did no interviews or tv appearances and Debbie Wasserman Schultz rigged just enough contests to give her the win- the nomination by crook. You really don't think it would be her style to join the race after Sanders looks to be winning so that they nominate Clinton instead and Sanders will just do what he did last time and say to his supporters welp this is reality folks. So he says that's all folks and endorses the democrat nominee??

Why would I need to imagine it? I've seen it.

No, I don't think it's her style to steal the race. I think she's so arrogant she thinks non-"deplorable" voters actually like her.

Why are you such a hater?? The DNC 2016 contest was rigged and they got away with it. Why is it absurd to think they would do it again? Thiefs often return to the scene of the crime. You think they made a deal so Sanders would get it next time? Like Clinton didnt intend to run two terms or to win? Sanders cant run in 2024.

This thread is about the democratic nomination. The dnc has just started polling people asking if Clinton should run. The last poll she was statistically tying with Joe Biden. If Joe Biden dropped out who do you think his supporters would vote for? Clinton literally stole delegates from Sanders camp last time and Sanders didnt even contest it.. Im just paying attention to the writing on the wall...

Don't look now, but you resemble that remark.

As for me, I'm the one who seems to have wasted my time discussing the sound reasons I don't think Clinton will be running, only to have them ignored.
