Bloomberg gun plan: Permits, assault weapon ban, age limits

    December 5, 2019, 2:22 PM CST

AURORA, Colo. (AP) — Democratic presidential contender Michael Bloomberg unveiled a gun control policy on Thursday just steps from the site of one of Colorado's worst mass shootings, calling for a ban on all assault weapons, mandatory permits for gun purchasers and a new position in the White House to coordinate gun violence prevention.
“I’ve been all in on the fight against gun violence for 15 years, and I’m just getting started,” Bloomberg declared. “As president, I will work to end the gun violence epidemic once and for all."
Bloomberg, the billionaire former New York City mayor, entered the Democratic presidential primary less than two weeks ago. Gun violence has quickly emerged as a core issue for his presidential bid, as it has been for his political and philanthropic efforts for much of the last decade. Bloomberg is well known to gun control advocates in Colorado and across the country, where he's funneled tens of millions of dollars from his personal fortune to help like-minded candidates while creating and supporting gun control groups such as Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action.
Despite his dedication to the issue, the former Republican is viewed skeptically by many Democratic primary voters, who look at his ties to Wall Street and vast personal wealth with suspicion. Democratic rivals including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren in recent days have accused him of trying to buy the election.
At the same time, Bloomberg is pounding the local airwaves in all 50 states with television ads highlighting his work on issues on gun violence and climate change while casting himself as best positioned to defeat Trump next fall. After spending roughly $40 million on an ad campaign over the first week or so of his campaign, he began running a second ad campaign backed by tens of millions of dollars more on Wednesday.
The 77-year-old New Yorker outlined his plan to combat gun violence before an invitation-only audience of about 40 victims of gun violence and gun control activists at a Christian center, near the movie theater in Aurora where a gunman killed 12 people and wounded nearly 60 others in 2012. The speaking lineup included Democratic state Rep. Tom Sullivan, whose son, Alex, was killed in the attack.
Sullivan formally endorsed Bloomberg while introducing him Thursday.
“I have witnessed the actions Mike has taken since Alex was murdered,” Sullivan said, insisting that victims of gun violence would have an ally in the White House should Bloomberg win the election.
The policies Bloomberg outlined Thursday largely mirror those he fought for on the state and federal levels in recent years, though it's the first time he's released his specific prescription for gun violence as a presidential candidate. T hey are ambitious and would almost certainly face fierce resistance from the NRA and Republicans in Congress, but they are not dramatically different from those of his Democratic rivals.
The difference, Bloomberg said Thursday, is his proven commitment to the issue.
“I promise you I will never back down from this fight,” he said. "That’s the kind of president this country needs and you deserve.”
Among the highlights, Bloomberg's plan would:
-- Reinstate the federal ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
-- Require every gun buyer to obtain a permit before making a purchase.
-- Require point-of-sale background checks on all gun purchases while closing the gun show loophole.
-- Institute a new age limit of 21 for those wishing to buy handguns, semi-automatic rifles and shotguns.
-- Require a mandatory 48-hour waiting period for all gun purchases.
-- Institute a federal “red flag” law to deny permits to “troubled people who pose a danger to themselves or others.”
-- Institute a temporary ban on gun possession for those convicted of assault or other violent misdemeanors.
-- Ban all guns in K-12 schools, colleges, and universities, except for law enforcement.
-- Reverse the law that gives gun makers and gun dealers immunity from lawsuits.
-- Create the position of White House gun coordinator “to mobilize the public to fight gun violence and launch an inter-agency hub to fight gun violence.”

“As president, I will work to end the gun violence epidemic once and for all."
There is no "gun violence epidemic".

At 5.4 per 100,000, the US homicide rate (by all means) is low, compared globally.

Remove the murders committed in the five worst ghettoes in the country and the rate falls to one comparable to Belgium or Finland.

There are an estimated 420 million firearms in private hands in the US and over 8 TRILLION rounds of ammo.

If gun owners were the problem...you'd $#@!ing know it.

What Bloomberg fails to understand is that the 2nd Amendment is my permit. "Assault rifle" is a term that was created by politicians. They can paint any kind of gun thats used in a crime as an assault weapon.

    Bloomberg releases gun control plan
    BY TAL AXELROD - 12/05/19

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg released an expansive gun control plan Thursday as he works to underscore his advocacy on the hot-button issue in his new White House bid.

The plan calls for a litany of popular Democratic proposals, including bolstering background checks, removing guns from those who may pose a danger to themselves or others, banning assault weapons and removing protections for gun manufacturers from civil suits.

Democrats daily push the overton window left while Republicans frantically try to stay inside of it. At least Bloomberg won't win, but they do their damage just be putting out these ideas in national campaigns.

    Bloomberg top ten:

    1. Universal Background Checks—Bloomberg’s support of universal background checks was made clear following the December 14, 2012, attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School. In the aftermath of that attack, On the Issues quoted him saying, “You have an issue where 90% of the public, 80% of NRA members even, say that they think we should have reasonable checks before people are allowed to buy guns–they all support the 2nd Amendment, as do I.” The problem with Bloomberg’s push at that time was that the Sandy Hook attacker stole his guns, so no amount of point-of-purchase gun control would have stopped his attack. The problem with his continuation of the same push now is that nearly every mass shooter of the last decade acquired his guns via a background check, so expanding checks to cover private sales would not have prevented the attacks.

    2. Banning ‘Assault Weapons’—Bloomberg has long advocated a ban on “assault weapons,” but he admits securing the ban is an uphill battle because the guns are rarely used in crime when compared with other firearms. USA Today reported Bloomberg’s push for a ban on “the manufacture and sale” of “assault weapons” following Sandy Hook. But in 2017 he told the New York Times, “You can have a ban on assault weapons. But assault weapons kill 400 people a year. They get a lot of press. But its 400 vs. 31,000 with handguns.”

    3. More Gun Trafficking Legislation—Bloomberg was a trendsetter in the habit of blaming out-of-state gun laws for the crime in New York City. Laws against gun trafficking have been a go-to for him as a result. A problem for Bloomberg and other leftists is that gun trafficking is already illegal, and ATF background check 4473 makes clear that buying a gun for a prohibited person is not allowed.

    4. ‘High Capacity’ Magazine Ban—On June 25, 2011, the Patch reported Bloomberg’s support of a “ban on the sale or transfer of high-capacity ammunition magazines.”

    5. War on Gun Shows—Bloomberg supports closing the so-called “gun show loophole,” which is liberal-speak for criminalizing private gun sales.

    6. Supports an Expansion of the Prohibited Purchasers’ List–In the wake of the Sandy Hook attack, CBS News reported Bloomberg’s support for adding the “No Fly” list to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System’s prohibited purchasers’ list. Bloomberg did not mention that the “No Fly” list had nothing to do with the Sandy Hook attack and would not have hindered, much less prevented, the shooting.

    7. Supports Red Flag Laws—Bloomberg supports laws that allow judges to issue orders to seize firearms. One of the groups he funds–Everytown for Gun Safety–has spent millions in the last months alone pushing for a Red Flag Law. CNBC reported on Everytown’s “digital and TV ads” focused on pushing “Congress to require tougher background checks for gun sales along with strong red-flag laws, which are meant to take firearms away from those deemed a threat to themselves or others.”

    8. Opposes National Reciprocity—Bloomberg’s Everytown opposes a national reciprocity rule where concealed carry licenses are recognized state-to-state like driver’s licenses. Politico reported Everytown’s pledge to spend up to $25 million in the 2018 election cycle to defeat candidates who supported such reciprocity.

    9. Opposes Campus Carry—In 2018, CSPAN reported Bloomberg’s opposition to campus carry for self-defense in New Hampshire. Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action fights campus carry when a state legislature gives it consideration. For example, the Bloomberg-funded gun control group fought against campus carry for self-defense when Florida legislators were considering it, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Moms Demand delivered thousands of signatures to oppose campus carry when it was being considered by the Georgia legislature.

    10. Opposes Armed Teachers—Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action also opposes allowing teachers to be armed to shoot back if under attack. The group spent $200,000 on an ad campaign designed to dissuade Florida legislators from allowing teachers to be armed for self-defense following the Parkland school shooting.

-- Institute a new age limit of 21 for those wishing to buy handguns, semi-automatic rifles and shotguns.
I am ok with a State choosing to enforce this.....just like the drinking age.
If the state can decide whether our teens can buy any alcohol, then they can decide if they can buy and operate a lethal weapon.
But it should not be a federal law, it should be something the individual states decide, if Mississippi decides they are ok to have an 18 year buy guns then fine, and if New York says 21 then ok to that too.

Everything else can be taken to the supreme court if he tries to enforce those, that's why it's important for Trump to keep picking judges, 2nd is on the line once democrats regain power it's in their platform to do something that violates the 2nd.
