An Avocado a Day Boosts Your Brain

    Written By: GreenMedInfo Research Group

Move over apples! Research shows an avocado a day significantly boosts lutein concentrations in your brain, with corresponding improvements in cognitive function. Lutein has beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and avocados are an excellent source

Avocados are a treasure trove of nutrition, in part because they're a bioavailable source of lutein, a carotenoid that's excellent for your brain. Lutein crosses your blood-brain barrier and also accumulates in the macular region of your eye's retina. The macula lutea, which is Latin for "yellow spot" and also known as macular pigment (MP), is a yellow area near the center of your retina.

Macular pigment is largely comprised of lutein and another carotenoid, zeaxanthin, and plays an important role in filtering blue light, while also offering antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.[1]

However, the density of macular pigment in your retina (macular pigment density, or MPD) is also linked to cognitive function, as the amount of lutein in your retina is significantly associated with the lutein concentrations in your brain. As such, MPD can be used as a biomarker for lutein in your brain, which in turn is associated with better brain function.

A Daily Avocado Increases Lutein, Boosts Your Brain

Considering that one avocado contains about 0.5 milligrams (mg) of lutein, researchers were interested to know if eating this healthy fruit could benefit cognition.[2] For six months, 48 adults consumed either one avocado, one potato or one cup of chickpeas daily -- the latter two options serving as control options, since they contain no lutein.

At the end of the study, lutein levels in the avocado group increased by 25%, compared to 15% in the control group (which may have been due to unreported dietary changes that took place during the study). However, the avocado group also had an increase in MPD after six months, while the control group did not.

Along with improvements in memory, those eating an avocado a day had improved sustained attention, working memory and efficiency in approaching a problem, leading researchers to concluded, "Dietary recommendations including avocados may be an effective strategy for cognitive health."[3]

The avocados proved to be an excellent way to boost lutein levels, even though they contain relatively little. The researchers speculated this may benefit brain health via:

    Improving antioxidant and anti-inflammatory status

Modulating functional properties of synaptic membranes in the brain

Changes in the physiochemical and structural features of synaptic membranes in the brain

Beyond this, GreenMedinfo's lutein research portal shows it has promise for treating at least 65 diseases, from macular degeneration and cognitive decline to metabolic diseases and cancer.

Avocado also has at least 28 known actions by which it exerts benefits on your body. In addition to helping your brain, avocado is a known ally for your heart. In fact, that one avocado a day may not only give you a cognitive boost but has been shown, in separate research, to improve cholesterol and lower your cardio-metabolic risk factors.[4]

It's just one example of why eating whole superfoods like avocado makes sense; check out GreenMedinfo's research database for more of the latest avocado research.

It's a good saturated fat that your body needs.

Here is a great article that breaks it all down: https://www.streetdirectory.com/trav..._fat_loss.html

Dietary fat doesn't turn into body fat. Carbs turn into body fat.

There is nothing wrong with eating several avocados a day.

Bad fats cause inflammation and may lead to heart disease, so do carbs, but fortunately avocados have good fats and will help prevent heart disease.

I don't think I've ever ate an avocado once in my life.

You should. They are really good. Creamy, awesome flavor and very healthy. They are pretty much available year around as they are imported mostly from California for part of the year, then Mexico, Central and South America for the rest of the year.

You want Hass avocados, they are the best. They have a bumpy skin texture.

When you buy them, they may be hard or soft. You don't want them so soft they are starting to rot, but it should be soft like a NERF toy to be ready to eat. If they are hard, then just buy them, take them home and put them in a paper bag and check them each day until they feel like a NERF toy on all sides, top to bottom.

Take a knife and cut them in half, then take out the seed if you are eating the whole thing.. but be careful, a lot of people end up in the hospital from avocado injuries cutting their hands.. DO NOT use the tip of the blade, use the edge like so and pull out the seed:

Make criss-cross cuts or slices while it is still inside the skin, then scoop it out with a spoon.

Spread it on toast with a butter knife, some butter on the toast is optional, and a little salt and pepper.

Or cube it and make guacamole. Dice a little bit of onion, tomato, squeeze of lime, cilantro, a little salt and pepper and mix it with a bunch of the avocado cubes, then mix it up a bit, but keep it chunky.

If you have leftover avocado or guacamole, it will turn brown fast when exposed to oxygen. Cover it with saran wrap, or you can use spray oil on a half an avocado to help keep it green.

Lime also helps keep it green.

If it turns brown, you can mix a little lime and mix it up, it will probably be fine. If it gets too brown, then it doesn't taste very good tho.

    Why the paper bag?

A paper bag will help it ripen a little faster and more evenly.

Sometimes part of the avocado will be ripe, and other parts will be hard. I think this is usually in part because the avocado was not in its optimal ripeness stage to begin with when it was picked, but you can help mitigate this with a paper bag.

Some people keep the pit and place it in the middle of the guacamole to help it from turning brown quick.
