The Gazette-Journal reported that Gloucester’s Colonial Courthouse had a full house, with enough pro-gun supporters to “[cover] much of the court circle outside, standing shoulder to shoulder in support of a resolution designed to make Gloucester County a Second Amendment Sanctuary.”
There was a 90 minute discussion over the matter, including input from residents who were overwhelmingly in support of adopting sanctuary status. The discussion was followed by a unanimous vote in favor the Second Amendment Sanctuary declaration.

As a result of a number of proposed anti-gun bills in Virginia, many of its cities and counties have declared themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries. However, one county went above and beyond by passing a Militia Resolution.
This resolution codifies the establishment and maintenance of a de facto militia in Tazewell county.
Firearms News reached out to the Tazewell councilman Thomas Lester, who is also a professor of American History and Political Science.

Lester argued, “Declaring our county a Second Amendment Sanctuary is a great first step, however, Virginia is unique because of its constitution. Under Article 1 section 13 of the VA Constitution, VA must maintain a well-regulated militia composed of its people to validate its authority.”

Nelson County declares itself Second Amendment sanctuary

On Tuesday, Nelson County became another name on a long list of Second Amendment sanctuaries in Virginia.

The Nelson County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 in favor of passing a resolution making Nelson County a Second Amendment sanctuary, to stand against any possible infringements on Constitutional rights some fear state representatives may pass during the legislative session, which begins in January. Ernie Reed, Central District representative, voted against the motion.

The resolution itself was finalized after the agenda and meeting packet had been made public, causing some backlash.

The final resolution declares: “Whereas, the Nelson County Board of Supervisors wishes to express its intent to stand as a Sanctuary County for Second Amendment rights and to oppose, within the limits of the Constitution of the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia, any efforts to restrict such rights, and to use such legal means at its disposal to protect the right of the citizens to keep and bear arms, including through legal action, the power of appropriations of public funds, and the right of petition for redress of grievances.”

Jesse Rutherford, East District representative, after reading the paragraph which was a late addition to the resolution, said it was on par with a vast majority of the commonwealth.

“I might also add that paragraph itself is sitting with 48 other sanctuary localities. Let’s be 49,” Rutherford said.

As early as 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, a line had formed outside the courtroom as residents waited for the meeting. By 2 p.m. around 200 individuals, most of whom wore “Guns Save Lives” stickers handed out by representatives of the Virginia Citizen Defense League, crowded inside the courtroom and spilled out into the hallway.

The board limited public comments to an hour. At the end of the hour, 30 people who had signed up to speak had spoken and the vast majority had said they wanted to see Nelson become a sanctuary.

The first speaker, Angie Branham, voiced her support for the Second Amendment and Nelson standing with it.

“As a woman I have been assaulted and if I had had a gun that assault would have never taken place. This is our Second Amendment right,” Branham said.


Supporters cited reasons including the Second Amendment was a Constitutional right that state representatives shouldn’t infringe on; that the right to bear arms was the only way to guarantee personal freedom; and that these proposed laws only harm law-abiding citizens.

“The problem is the decay of our society and lack of education in every way,” said Steven Key, a Nellysford resident.

Opponents of the proposed resolution said it wasn’t up to county boards to decide which laws to follow or not, that it was preemptive, and they expressed displeasure that not everyone who had signed up to give public comment was given the chance to speak and the room wasn’t big enough to hold everyone.

“This concept of tabling this discussion seems like a really valid one given that when I came here there were people all the way back to the main hallway who couldn’t get in here. I don’t know how many of them are hearing this dialogue. I certainly think they should be hearing how our supervisors decide to process this and to hear your views as you guys talk. I also hear the resolution has changed since what was put out on the web. So it just seems bad process to me to go forward,” said Joyce Burton, an Afton resident who opposed the resolution.

“I do not want you to consider this resolution. Gun legislation needs to be considered in a thoughtful manner that examines each proposed change individual rather than defaulting to major sweeping reactionary symbols which reduce the issues’ complexity to all or nothing, us versus them ultimatums,” Burton said.

Reed said if the board votes on the resolution, he believes they should ask County Attorney Phil Payne, who wasn’t present, to weigh in on the consequences for the board and everyone should have a chance to see and read the resolution.

“I have issues with the process and I have issues with the content,” Reed said before making a motion to table the vote.

The motion lost, one to four.

Thomas Bruguiere, Jr., West District representative, motioned to vote to make Nelson County a Second Amendment sanctuary and Rutherford seconded. Nelson County is the 49th locality, according to Rutherford, to become a Second Amendment sanctuary.

“Right or wrong, you have to give credit to the move that’s going on. You can color [the] state one color; not Democrat or Republican, but the [Second] Amendment color. The right to bear arms,” said Tommy Harvey, North District representative.

Virginia Has Become An Overnight Tidal Wave Of Second Amendment Sanctuaries
The sudden flood of resolutions to protect gun owners will soon envelop most of the state.

In a series of rapidly changing developments, Virginia is undergoing wholesale rebellion by rural and even suburban counties, rejecting the oppressive gun control agenda recently revealed by the new incoming Democrat-controlled legislature. Gun owners all across Old Dominion have been up in arms since anti-gun forces took the House and Senate in the recent election and are now preparing to resist having their arms taken from them in any way possible.

Enter Second Amendment Sanctuary Counties.

The county-level defensive tactic that began originally in Oregon close to a decade ago, then popularized in Illinois, has spread to over a dozen states. It comes as no surprise that with few other options and little to lose, many communities in the state are vowing not to take part in any gun confiscation schemes or enforcement of unconstitutional laws designed to make private citizens less able to defend themselves.

The speed at which they reacted is a testament to how furious they are that their state government now wishes to infringe on their rights. An even dozen counties have passed gun owner sanctuary resolutions already, with new ones coming on a near-daily basis. Here's the list and what we know so far:

Huge night for gun owners, 18 new sanctuaries, including in Prince William County, City of Chesapeake, and Spotsylvania County! There are now a total of 77 sanctuaries across Virginia. Tomorrow night is going to have another large number of localities considering resolutions!

Here are the new sanctuaries on Tuesday night:

• Caroline County - 600+ in attendance
• Chesapeake - unanimous! Massive turnout well over 1,300 people

• Floyd County - 5 to 0 - packed house!
• Greene County
• Henrico County - 3 to 2
• James City County - Unanimous
• Martinsville
• Nelson County - 4 to 1 - overflow crowd
• Prince George County
• Prince William County - 6 to 2, massive crowd - past 1,000
• Smyth County - Unanimous - 1,100 or so in attendance
• Spotsylvania County - unanimous - massive, massive crowd - way past 1,000

• Warren County - unanimous - well over 1,000 in attendance

These localities didn't pass a resolution for various reasons:

Fredericksburg rejected the resolution. Very low turnout. I think everyone was at the Spotsylvania meeting.

Lynchburg failed to pass their resolution by one vote: 3 to 4. May reconsider in January.

Newport News did not take any action but heard from a room full of people. If this is to pass, we need to massively overflow their meeting room next time.

Waynesboro to vote on their resolution in January after hearing from a standing-room-only crowd on Tuesday.

Winchester had 75 to 100 with GSL stickers in the chambers and more in the hallway. 10 speakers, all pro-gun. City Council went into closed session afterwards, but no resolution and no vote tonight. We'll have to see what they do next.

I am pretty surprised about Prince William. PW County has historically kind of been the new border between the North and the South. There's been a lot of development and carpetbagging over the last 25 years and I thought that line was getting shoved farther South, probably even past Fredericksburg.

Prince William County’s incoming board of supervisors, who take office Jan. 1, will have a 5-3 Democratic majority. The outgoing board has a 6-2 Republican majority. Chairman-elect Ann Wheeler (D) said the incoming board would repeal a resolution declaring the county a “Second Amendment sanctuary” as soon as possible, if it is approved by the outgoing board.

Why, if you are a Democrat, you threaten them with the National Guard. That's what you do.

'The law is the law': Virginia Democrats float prosecution and National Guard for police who fail to enforce gun control legislation


Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill say local police who do not enforce gun control measures likely to pass in Virginia should face prosecution and even threats of the National Guard.

After November's Virginia Legislature elections that led to Democrats taking control of both chambers, the gun control legislation proposed by some Democrats moved forward, including universal background checks, an “assault weapons” ban, and a red flag law.

Legal firearm owners in the state, however, joined with their sheriffs to form Second Amendment sanctuary counties, which declare the authorities in these municipalities uphold the Second Amendment in the face of any gun control measure passed by Richmond.

Over 75 counties in Virginia have so far adopted such Second Amendment sanctuary resolutions in the commonwealth, the latest being Spotsylvania County. The board of supervisors voted unanimously to approve a resolution declaring that county police will not enforce state-level gun laws that violate Second Amendment rights.

Virginia Democratic officials, however, already say local law enforcement supporting these resolutions will face consequences if they do not carry out any law the state Legislature passes.

“I would hope they either resign in good conscience, because they cannot uphold the law which they are sworn to uphold, or they're prosecuted for failure to fulfill their oath,” Democratic Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly told the Washington Examiner of local county police who may refuse to enforce future gun control measures. “The law is the law. If that becomes the law, you don't have a choice, not if you're a sworn officer of the law.”

McEachin also noted that Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam could call the National Guard, if necessary.

“And ultimately, I'm not the governor, but the governor may have to nationalize the National Guard to enforce the law,” he said. “That's his call, because I don't know how serious these counties are and how severe the violations of law will be. But that's obviously an option he has.”

Virginia Dems Wanted to Confiscate ‘Assault Weapons’ – Then They Realized How Many Virginians Own Them

Virginia Democrat lawmakers backtracked on a gun confiscation proposal on Monday, in the face of pressure from gun rights groups across the state.

“I’m not going to lock up a large part of Virginia,” Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw, a Democrat, told the Virginia Mercury on Monday.

Virginia Democrats, who in November seized control of both houses of the state’s legislature for the first time in more than two decades, made gun control laws a focus of their campaigns. But the gun confiscation measure, at least, has sparked outrage in a wide swathe of rural localities across the state.

A pending ban on “assault weapons” will now include a provision allowing state gun owners to keep the firearms already in their possession, the Mercury reported.

An early draft of the bill would have made it a felony to possess any firearm defined as an “assault weapon.” Gun rights groups were particularly concerned by the lack of an exception for those who already possess such weapons.

The ban is backed by Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam, whose spokeswoman, Alena Yarmosky, told the Mercury that “the governor’s assault weapons ban will include a grandfather clause for individuals who already own assault weapons, with the requirement they register their weapons before the end of a designated grace period.”

As noted by the Washington Free Beacon’s Stephen Gutowski, the move to confiscate guns faced immense grassroots opposition in the state, which has seen a majority of its counties declare themselves “Second Amendment sanctuaries.”

“I’ve never seen anything like this, and I’ve been doing this for over 20 years,” Virginia Citizens Defense League president Philip Van Cleave told the Free Beacon in November. “It’s a sleeping giant that had been pretty much not paying attention to politics, and now they’re awake, and now they’re flooding these sanctuary county hearings. Flooding them.”


“They were hoping to play that card later, but they’re playing it now because they have to find some way to slow down this whole process,” he said.

While several of Virginia’s congresscritters are calling for Second Amendment Sanctuary counties in the state to be stripped of state funds or to have the National Guard brought in to enforce new gun control laws, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam is instead offering veiled threats of “consequences” for sheriffs in Second Amendment Sanctuary counties unless they enforce whatever gun control bills he signs into law.

Northam and newly elected lawmakers believe they have a mandate for gun control, but the 84 counties and cities (according to the Virginia Citizens Defense League) that have passed resolutions in opposition are a clear demonstration that support for these proposals is limited to the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. and other densely populated and deep blue areas of the state.

Threatening counties with punishment for not enforcing unenforceable and unconstitutional laws makes it clear that anti-gun Democrats in Virginia are far more interested in targeting legal gun owners than gang members and drug dealers in the state. Rep. Donald McEachin may want Northam to call out the National Guard to enforce gun control laws in rural counties with low crime rates, but they’d be better off patrolling the streets of Petersburg, Virginia in McEachin’s congressional district.

That city has Virginia’s highest violent crime and homicide rates, but instead of supporting targeted enforcement of the most violent offenders in Petersburg, McEachin and his anti-gun colleagues have made the state’s law-abiding gun owners their top priority.

We already KNOW what is coming down the pike in regards to legislation in the NOW Dem-Controlled Gen. Assembly.
Why do you think we are pro-actively coming out by the thousands in our localities, to our BOS, to our Sheriffs, Prosecutors, etc?

Court cases will no doubt ensue if our tyrannical legislature passes these laws. It will be the enforcement, it will be in the judicial system where the major fights will inevitably take place. This is just the start of the fight. I mean, the very, very tip of the iceberg here. Yes, putting pressure on the legislature, of course I agree with you 100%, Matt. But the problem is, we already know we're up against there. When you foresee the future, you can start planning to counteract it before you even get to the main fight.
